  Thanks and prayer

So far this summer has been remarkably easy. 70s, 80s, only one 90. Enough rain to avoid fires. Definitely welcome after a hard winter.

BUT: The hard winter was also remarkably easy until February decided to cram an entire winter into two weeks just to prove it could be done.

If the pattern repeats, September could hammer us with two weeks of 130 degrees followed by 130 mph wind, to pay back February's bet.

So Polistra and pals are praising the weather gods for present pleasantry, while placing a precautionary prayer against perseverative patterns.

Please, weather gods! We wouldn't mind a couple weeks of 90s and a couple days of 100s if that's what it takes to avoid the "Hold my beer" shenanigans.

  Neighborhood futility

On the corner you can see the result of last week's huge noisy construction project by the idiot city, described as "traffic calming". I thought they might have been building an island to "calm" traffic by congesting traffic. Nope. They just busted out the ADA ramp on the corner and rebuilt it the same way. Digging holes and filling them. (Admittedly the project built an actual sidewalk on another block.)

And closer to the camera, another fine example of futility. The neighbor has a ferocious sprinkler. A few weeks ago it was scanning across my house, powerwashing my bedroom window for 12 hours every night. I asked him to turn down the pressure, and he did. Thanks!

Today he's powerwashing passing cars. (Thus fulfilling the name auto sprinkler.) The sprinkler isn't wetting any grass at all. It's on the curb, shooting across the street, again for 12 hours. The neighbor is a photographer by trade, so presumably he understands the concepts of focal length and aperture and exposure time in optics. He should apply those concepts to hydraulics. This is a telephoto sprinkler in a yard where a simple pinhole camera obscura would do the job.

  New evidence for Svensmark

Via ScienceDaily:
When galactic cosmic rays increased during the Earth's last geomagnetic reversal transition 780,000 years ago, the umbrella effect of low-cloud cover led to high atmospheric pressure in Siberia, causing the East Asian winter monsoon to become stronger. This is evidence that galactic cosmic rays influence changes in the Earth's climate. The findings were made by a research team led by Professor Masayuki Hyodo.

The Svensmark Effect is a hypothesis that galactic cosmic rays induce low cloud formation and influence the Earth's climate. Tests based on recent meteorological observation data only show minute changes in the amounts of galactic cosmic rays and cloud cover, making it hard to prove this theory. However, during the last geomagnetic reversal transition, when the amount of galactic cosmic rays increased dramatically, there was also a large increase in cloud cover, so it should be possible to detect the impact of cosmic rays on climate at a higher sensitivity.
Since we're in the middle of another pole reversal that started in 1974, the Universal Year Of Inflection For Every Fucking Thing, it shouldn't be surprising that we're seeing similar effects now.

  Answered

A short and hugely important piece of history, written in an unlikely place.
Kennedy revisited the idea of cooperation repeatedly thereafter. By autumn 1963, his vision was to form an Apollo programme that would build bridges between the two superpowers, instead of heightening cold-war rivalries.

But the timing never worked. A series of conflicts between the two nations in 1961 and 1962 — in the stand-off that led to the construction of the Berlin Wall, the Cuban missile crisis and so on — blunted efforts at genuine cooperation.

Nonetheless, by September 1963, relations had improved and Kennedy invited the Soviet Union to work with the United States.
Why did Deepstate have to kill him right then? There's the answer. The spirit of cooperation included other issues as well, but this aspect of the spirit is sufficient evidence.

Cooperation in space eventually happened anyway, and still continues now despite Deepstate's best efforts, BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE ANY CHOICE. We outsourced all of the industries and skills and training needed for spaceflight. Russia never outsourced anything. Russia maintained its skills. So now we HAVE TO rely on Russian rockets.

  Plan ahea

Following on previous item.

KSHS has a second set of records from the Missoury Fur Company, led by Clark in 1812. This set is in English, and mainly deals with the finances and bylaws of the corporation itself. The first set was in semi-French, and recorded the transactions of the store that sold supplies to the explorers.

The clerk who kept these records had a habit of doodling, and didn't have a sense of proper graphic layout. Here's the title page:

Like the old PLAN AHEA poster.

His ledger and his math doodles show how the columnar approach was still strong even in a strictly decimal system.

Part of the ledger:

Note the lack of leading zero on the cents column, and the blanks instead of zeros on amounts without cents.

And his doodles:

Again, even in a familiar layout of a subtraction problem, and even with actual decimal points indicated, the cents and dollars are felt to be distinct columns.

Question: Was the leading zero introduced by adding machines and cash registers?

Easy answer: No. Here's a sample ledger from an 1844 bookkeeping text:

No cents indicated by 00, two and a half cents indicated by 02½.

Leading zero was available and taught before machines, but probably enhanced by dealing with machines.

  Erdogan is still an idiot.

Via ZH:
On Sunday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan - who last weekend fired the head of the central bank for not cutting rates fast enough, and who has now become the de facto head of the CBRT - promised "significantly lower interest rates by the end of the year", Bloomberg reported.

“We aim to reduce inflation to one digit by the end of this year,” Erdogan told journalists in Istanbul, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency. “As we achieve this, we will achieve our year-end interest rate target as well."
Erdogan was uniquely SMART on the subject of Soros in person. When Soros led a coup, Erdogan squashed it and then jailed EVERYONE involved. All countries should do the same.

But then he spoiled the whole PURPOSE of winning the war by continuing the campaign to join EU, which is Soros.

In the last few months he seems to have settled into the Russian side on basic military matters, which will help to accomplish the basic PURPOSE. You can't defeat Soros while courting Soros.

Now he's going full Soros in economic terms. Zero interest, infinite debt. This GUARANTEES total control by the bankers, and RUINS the strong industrial economy that Turkey has built over many decades.

On this issue, like all other issues, he should be learning from Russia. Putin kicked out Soros a long time ago, along with the Sorosian satanic economics that we had injected into Yeltsin's regime. Russia's central bank focuses on getting INDUSTRY and FARMS running, which compels higher interest rates, more savings, less debt, and lower foreign exchange rates. Banker Nabibullina is doing ALL the right things for the REAL economy, which makes her uniquely heroic among all bankers.

  Werner = Wernher

Satan reporting on Satan:
"I see Amazon as a technology company that just happened to do retail," begins Werner Vogels, Amazon's chief technology officer.

"When Jeff started Amazon, he wasn't thinking about starting a bookshop. He was really fascinated by the internet. Only mortal humans ever saw Amazon as merely a retailer."
Nice to have it verified. Satan believes he is God.
Mr Vogels doesn’t feel it's Amazon’s responsibility to make sure Rekognition is used accurately or ethically.

“That’s not my decision to make,” he tells me.
Reminds me of another Werner.

  Minuet vs bulldozer

A sharp observation from Tesla skeptic 'Bachman':
Parking lots require that drivers engage in minuets of rule violation in order to accommodate each other. Reverse to allow someone out of his spot. Drive on the wrong side to go around him. Yield an empty spot to someone already waiting. FSD requires full Theory Of Mind.

I've said the same thing repeatedly, in the context of pedestrians vs drivers.

Both of these tyrannical delusions are commonly held by people who consider themselves to be Libertarians, which is exactly how these tyrannies have been inserted into daily life. If these robotic forms of commerce and transportation had been introduced by people wearing jackboots and helmets, the insertion would have taken a few minutes longer.

Automatic systems force out human systems, destroying the poor and powerless.

This is obvious with the market. When banks can bring in infinite profit by sucking on Yellen's wrinkly counterfeit-money tits, they don't need to pay interest to savers and they don't need to make (carefully judged) loans to small businesses. Capitalism no longer offers any benefits to working people.

Not quite so obvious with Googlecar. As a non-car-owning pedestrian, I can see it clearly. Every day I cross a half-dozen major streets, always involving a human negotiation. I try to predict what drivers will do, and drivers try to predict what I'll do. Often a driver will see me on the sidewalk, will realize that the density of traffic keeps me from crossing, and will nicely stop and motion me across.

Would Googlecar do this? Would it even stop when a kid unthinkingly walks into the street? No.

  Missing the whole point

BBC is bannering a leak from Ambassador Darroch that completely misses the point and purpose of everything.

Darroch wrote that Trump scuttled the treaty with Persia "to spite Obama".

WELL, OF COURSE. DUH, DUH, DUH, DUH, A THOUSAND TIMES DUH.

All presidents do everything to spite their political opponents. That's called POLITICS. Obama didn't do much until his last year, when he changed a whole bunch of policies specifically to spite his Republican successor. THIS IS FUCKING NORMAL.

It shouldn't be normal; leaders should do things to benefit the country, not to poison-pill the opposition. In sane countries like Russia and Hungary and Italy, leaders have started to do sane things. But here in Sorosia the ONLY action we get from leaders is soap-opera games.

Trump pretends to undo Obama's last-minute orders, restoring the condition that was just fine with Obama until he wanted to leave a trap. Trump's orders are carefully crafted to change nothing.

This idiotic default standard operating mode tells us nothing about Trump's actual PURPOSE in busting the treaty. In this case he did have a real PURPOSE beyond the default games.

Trump's PURPOSE was to obey Sheldon Adelson. BBC can't say it or think it for fucking obvious reasons.

  Wiskit dans son Avanture

KSHS has resumed adding new items regularly. One of the new items, a store ledger, triggered curiosity which led to a much more interesting older item.

A ledger from the store that was outfitting fur traders in the Louisiana Territory around 1812. It's in French, with some plain English. Deeply fascinating to an old bookkeeper. I'm sure real historians have answered all these questions, but I'm having fun trying to solve them.

Title on first page:

La Compagny des Fourures du Missoury dans son Avanture.

Here's the top few lines of an account for trader Brice Arnold, showing the ledger structure clearly.

The debit column (Doit) is equipment sold to the fur traders, the credit column (Avoir) is furs bought from the traders. Note the Avoir column is closed out with "Your bill given this day."

The money units are puzzling. The two columns are P and S. My first thought was Poids et Shillings, but it appears that Pesos were the dominant currency in the territory at that time. The S unit is 100ths of the P unit, not 8ths or 20ths. According to online sources, the peso would have been divided into 8 reales at this time, and centavos didn't start until 1863. No firm answer to this question. Was it just US dollars and cents, labeled P and S by tradition?

We have the $ sign on totals, which meant pesos before it meant dollars. One credible explanation of the symbol traces it to a habit of writing an abbreviation for Pesos as a big P with a little s as a diacritic on top. These clerks were precise with their pens, and their dollar sign always had a big belly and a little head. You can almost see a big P with a little s riding on it. They clearly weren't thinking of the whole symbol as an S with lines through it; their uppercase S is entirely different.

Note the marks after each number. Decimal points? Nope, ditto marks. The clerk meticulously repeated the ditto after each number in each column, indicating that all the left numbers were P and all the right numbers were S.

Columnar accounting belongs to the Roman era, not to the modern place-value era. Monetary units were mostly non-decimal, so the tradition of recording each unit in its own independent column made sense, and there was no reason for decimal points. Note that some of the S numbers are followed by fractions, which was still common in US pricing up till WW2 when inflation made fractional cents meaningless.

Roman and Arabic coexisted in the clerk's mind. Note the efficient use of both in month names. September is 7bre, October is 8bre, November is 9bre, and December is Xbre. Minimizing penstrokes.

There were some big names among the fursellers on the Avoir side. Chouteau, Clark, Gratiot, O'Fallon, all recognized as towns or streets.

The equipment sold to the fourures includes lots of guns as you'd expect, plus gun equipment like coups de poudre and balls. Guns are either pistoles, carabines, or "N. W. Guns". This thorough website lists all known gunmakers in that period; there are lots of Ns, often combined with other initials, but I don't see anything that could be NW or N and W. Did it just mean "Northwest Guns", guns suitable for the Northwest Territory?

The ledger doesn't list categories of merchandise, but one category emerges implicitly from the grouping of sales.

Beads, Blankets, Chemises, Pipes, and Wiskit.

Category: Equipment to impress and oppress the injuns.

Wiskit is an odd spelling, not seen anywhere else that I can find online, but it comes in Pintes and Bottes, so the meaning is obvious enough.

Later: Not convinced. These clerks were writing halfway between French and English. Torket is torquette, a package, as in torket de tabac. So Wiskit could be something like Husquette in proper French. Whiskey was Usquebac in French. Also, it seems to be closely associated with the poudre et balls. It couldn't simply be musket. Muskets don't come in pintes and bottes. Still looking.....

  Clear-sky rain

During the morning walk I felt drops of water on my arms. At first I thought it was lawn sprinklers, but it was definitely coming from overhead. I could see the water glistening on the pavement, and at one point I saw about a dozen drops falling in a group. The sky is mostly clear, a few fluffy cumulus clouds. Nothing that would signal rain.

Never experienced this before.

Checking radar:

Aha. There is some real rain a few miles away. Maybe these drops were carried from the real clouds by the jet stream?

  What big data knows

Youtube's Suggested For You generally hits my current preferences pretty well, allowing for the standard misinterpretation of Trump's motives and purposes.

Today's example is typical:

Likes Putin: check. Likes Brexit: check. Senior dogs: I watch the channel every day, so the latest from that channel certainly makes sense. Maps and graphic tech: check. Likes Trump: Rational assumption. There aren't a lot of "Trump fans" who hate Trump because he's a fake populist. I don't watch Navy stuff, but Google has obviously read the item I wrote a few hours ago.

By contrast, Twitter knows nothing at all about me.

My IP address is in Spokane. That's all they know. Or all they're willing to let me know, anyway.

  It's all blockades now 2

Via BBC again:

Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks has a peculiar enclave of official British territory. It's a little war memorial cemetery, holding the graves of a few British sailors who died fighting Krauts.

Starting in 1940 we were shipping war supplies to British forces as a way of participating while remaining technically neutral. Neutrality was a meaningful concept then, so the Krauts avoided bombing our ships. After Pearl Harbor the restriction was gone, and the Krauts used submarines just off the east coast. Thus the Outer Banks, unlike most of the US mainland, had a real taste of war. Stray shells, flying debris, bodies washing ashore.

Because Ocracoke was low-tech, British sailors had to be buried quickly, not stored for proper military handling. Later the accidental cemetery was made official, and declared to be British territory in honor of Britain's blockade-breaking service.

BBC's article shows sympathy for the islanders who had to suffer indirect consequences of Kraut blockades. Why doesn't BBC have equal sympathy for the direct and indirect victims of USA STRONG blockades? Many of the indirect victims are British companies which were accustomed to doing normal business with Persia and Russia. No sympathy for them.

We're the Krauts now.

  It's all blockades now 1

Via BBC, USA STRONG is preparing to levy a somewhat meaningful fine of 5 billion against Facebook.

Are we punishing FB for improper use of common carrier laws while censoring content? No.

Are we punishing FB for using everyone's offline data to snitch on dissidents? No.

Are we punishing FB for antitrust violations? No.

We are punishing FB for INCOMPLETE censorship, for FAILING to snitch on dissidents. They committed the crime of selling some data to Cambridge Analytica, in the same way that they sold data to many other organizations. Cambridge Analytica may have used the data to disparage Hillary, which is a Federal crime.

In other words, Facebook violated the official BLOCKADE against Deplorables. We are punishing FB in the same way that we punish French companies for doing business with Persia, or punish Germany for buying natural gas from Russia.

  A new sense? Not exactly

Via ScienceDaily, an excellent piece of pure Carver.
Back in the lab, the group studied wild samples of Spirostomum while also growing their own cultures of Spirostomum ambiguum, and began a deep dive into details of this ultra-fast contraction. Using high-speed imaging, they found it happens in 5 milliseconds -- the human eye takes 100-400 milliseconds to blink -- and that the cell endures about 14 times the force of gravity in the process. As it shrinks, pouches of toxin break off from the cell's edges and release their contents into the surrounding fluid.

During one late night in the lab, the researchers also noticed that, when in clumps, the cells seemed to all contract at the same time.
Well, that's not really ultrafast. Cochlear hair cells can do 120 microseconds. The communication is more interesting.
The first cell contracts and generates a flow, which triggers the second and that one triggers the third. So, you get this propagating trigger wave that passes through the whole colony..... a specific amount of bodily tension likely causes the opening or closing of tension gated ion channels within S. ambiguum, making it contract.
The fast motion moves the surrounding water, and the moving water opens ion gates, triggering a synapse-like response.

Well, that's not really a new sense. Baroreceptor neurons in blood vessels work the same way.

The MOST interesting part is the PARALLEL PURPOSE between these cells and baroreceptors. A technique used for fight AND flight by the free-living cell serves as part of the same (more complex) reaction in more complex creatures. Same gene? Wouldn't be surprised.

LIFE IS PURPOSE.

Would Iacocca have been a better Perot? A better Trump?

Reading an old issue of Collectible Auto as usual. This issue has a biography of John Herlitz, who designed for Chrysler in the '70s and '80s. I'm not interested in cars of those decades, but the article included a timely connection to a couple of recent RIPs.

Along with cars, Herlitz drew cartoons for a Chrysler internal newsletter.

This would have been around '83. Iacocca is famous for getting a federal bailout, but not famous for trying to halt offshoring. He deserves more fame for the latter!

Can't argue with experience, can quibble with a theory.

Mattingly writes a Texas insider view of Perot vs Bush.

I can't argue with an account from experience, but I wonder if Mattingly's hypothesis is the most likely.

He points out that both Perot and Bush Senior were elite Texans who looked down on ordinary Texans. Perot was known as a 'Highland Park Presbyterian' in Dallas. His wife was a leader in Planned Parenthood. Mattingly guesses that Perot resented Bush for courting pro-life votes.

I recognize the type in Okie terms. The West Side of Enid was the same. Presbies and Piskies, bankers and oilmen. The Mungers spoke only to Champlins, and the Champlins spoke only to God.

And when those Presbies and Piskies spoke to God through their ministers, they were speaking to abortion salesmen. The ministers ran an underground referral service for the nearest quasi-legal abortion mill in KCK.

So the connection makes sense, but doesn't seem powerful enough to account for the hostility between the families. Everyone knew that Bush didn't mean what he said, and 'Highland Park' types simply don't focus on religion. It's not part of life or thought. You have to make religious noises to keep the plebeians at bay, and that's as far as it goes. Trump is the same type transposed to NYC. He emits religious phrases written by staff, but he clearly has no idea what the phrases mean.

I'd look instead for a more earthly connection through Perot's main business. EDS was an ancestor of Amazon AWS, providing Big Data storage and processing to corporations and government. EDS was thus part of Deepstate. If CIA chief Bush had tried to favor a competitor over EDS, that would account for a grudge in the meaningful part of life.

(Sidenote: I hadn't thought of this before. Those abortion-selling reverends were serving the interests of the elite by culling the herds of hippies and blacks. They knew what they were doing.)

The other part of the "vacation"

For some reason I was thinking about the 1962 family "vacation" to visit dying Grandpa. I've already written about Grandpa's noble attempt to teach me about life. Grandpa was trying to immunize me against the delusions of the "liberal" parents by illustrating ACCURATE OBSERVATION. The vaccine didn't really activate until 1969 in jail, when those delusions collided head-on with serious reality. Then I saw what Grandpa was trying to say.

Other things were happening on that same "vacation". My ball-clipping mother was seemingly trying to visit all of her old boyfriends, showing my father how inadequate he was by comparison with the men she could have clipped.

This part of the "vacation" failed.

One of her old boyfriends owned a gas station and had a nice house, but he didn't have a happy life. He suffered from what we'd now call PTSD from WW2, and made life hell for everyone around him, including visitors.

The other old boyfriend was an undertaker. He decided to entertain the visitors by embalming a body while we watched. He explained how the big needle injected the embalming fluid, showed the color changing, explained what happened after burial.

DID THAT REALLY HAPPEN, or did I make up the memory? It must have happened. It's too fucking weird to make up.

  The mob never forgives

This Epstein dude is a sleazy international fixer and blackmailer. The type was featured prominently in the Mueller soap opera. All of the characters in that series were evil fixers and blackmailers who worked for all sides at the same time and betrayed all sides at the same time. Mueller carefully and meticulously "saw" only the crimes that helped Trump or Trump-related organizations. Standard FBI procedure, standard media procedure.

The same thing is happening with Epstein. As long as his crimes were mostly associated with the Clinton mob, prosecutors and media gave him a free pass. Now that a connection to the Trump mob is possible, prosecution is possible and stories are possible.

In this case the link point has a classic Deepstate twist.

The Trump connection is Acosta, the former prosecutor who GAVE EPSTEIN THE FREE PASS. Acosta was heroically serving Deepstate by freeing the fixer who could have snitched on the Clinton mob if prosecuted.

And how does Deepstate REWARD Acosta for his service to the Clinton mob? By tossing him to the wolves because he is now connected to the Trump mob.

Exactly the same trick that Deepstate pulled on Nixon. After 20 years of loyal service, he was destroyed anyway. The mob never forgives. No matter how loyally you serve the mob, one wrong step and you're dead.

= = = = =

More serious sidenote: The connection between intel services and sexual deviance is old, well-known, and almost tautological. Spies are often recruited by blackmail, so spies often have a currently unfashionable lifestyle. In the '50s, homosexuality was unfashionable, so many spies were homosexual. Now that homosexuality is the official norm, other lifestyles are still unfashionable and recruitable.

  The godmother

Once in a while a bit of political soap opera makes it through my filters. This is just too good to ignore.

Pelosi showing her Italian heritage:

All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world. But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got.

You got a complaint? You come and talk to me about it. But do not tweet about our members and expect us to think that that is just OK.

Too bad Brando is dead. I can see him playing the part to perfection. No makeup needed.

Come to think of it, it's not unfortunate. Diversity is everything in Hollywood! Now that Brando is a Person Of Rigor, he could play Pelosi magnificently. Pull him out of the coffin, prop him up, put a speaker inside the skull.

This is the whole fucking purpose of Gaia.

Via ZH, more details on PGE's failure.

The important point is that the long powerlines failed ON THEIR OWN from lack of maintenance. There wasn't a windstorm or a lightning bolt. The insulators were just OLD.

PGE continually avoided NORMAL MAINTENANCE on long lines that were up to ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD. The HV wire kept dropping into trees BECAUSE THE EQUIPMENT WAS OLD.

This is the ENTIRE FUCKING PURPOSE of the Gaian fraud. It was originally set up in 1974 to help CIA replace civilization with a single global government, but most of its current practitioners are SHARE VALUE CORPORATIONS who use Gaia to lay off their own FAILURES onto other companies like Exxon.

By normal sane standards it's a bizarre form of fraud. It wouldn't have worked before the propaganda branches of CIA had softened and melted our brains with 50 years of constant universal all-pervading brain toxin. No corporation in 1960 would have considered using religion to shake down other companies. GM wouldn't have used the doctrine of Consubstantiation to charge Lever Brothers for the Corvair's safety failures. Ford wouldn't have manipulated Premillenial Tribulation to bill Disney for the Pinto fires.

This time the trick isn't working for PGE. They finally bumped into an honest JUDGE who (so far) isn't buying the normal shit.

= = = = =

Footnote for clarity: In sane times, corporations and religions often manipulated the same aspects of human nature for their own purposes. (1) Unpopular people want to be popular and wealthy. Corporations used this desire to sell deodorant and clothing. Religions used it as the Prosperity Gospel. (2) Most folks don't want to die. Corporations used this to sell drugs and medical procedures. Religions used it to sell tithing and indulgences. These are parallel forms of dishonesty. Now businesses use religion as a tool for fraud.

Constants and variables 135, traffic flow edition

Like other semi-creative work, courseware has creative phases and organizing phases. Like other semi-creative workers, I'd rather do the creative stuff. I try to "justify" more new animations, but sooner or later the "justifications" bump into time constraints. Last week I ran out of "justifications" and had to start the dull work of editing and matching and setting up pointers and proofreading.

Also last week, the idiot Spokane dysgovernment pulled one of its typical stunts. Suddenly moved a pile of heavy equipment into this neighborhood and started CRASHING and HAMMERING and THROWING HUGE PIPES AROUND. As always they didn't give any warning or notice. I checked online and found out that this is a "traffic calming project". The online info doesn't include any maps or diagrams. I know that other "traffic calming projects" led to more speeders and more accidents, so we can expect the same here. It looks like they are narrowing down the intersection with an island of some sort, which will make the corner even more fun for school buses.

The conjunction of my phase change with the seismic distraction allowed me to test a long-held belief about 'flow' and concentration.

It's generally believed that creative work needs uninterrupted concentration, while proofreading and editing can be done 'in the background'. You can let it stand while you answer a phone or go to the store.

This rule is valid for physical creation like painting and pottery and cooking, where chemistry forces your hand. You can't start cooking a stew and then turn it off and leave it around for a few days until traffic-calming stops calming.

The old rule turns out to be backwards for my specific work. I could do the graphics and animation without any problem while the bulldozers and jackhammers were BANGING AND CRASHING. But the editing side requires me to keep two pictures and a dozen text files open and active at the same time, and I need to remember which items are 'source' and which are 'destination'. This takes serious concentration, and I can't just halt without dropping the spinning plates.

More fake concern about fake news about fake robots

Brendan Dixon reports on a convincing bit of CG that fooled a lot of people, INCLUDING ME.
Motion graphics artist @TomCoben published a video last week showing an industrial robot bowl a perfect strike. Strictly speaking, the robot did not actually bowl a strike: It rocketed the bowling ball the full length of the alley, striking the pins dead-center, sending them all flying.

As The Daily Dot points out—and as Tom tried to make clear well-before his video went viral—the video is fake. As a motion graphics professional, Tom wanted to demonstrate what he can do, not what robots can do.

But his video did not enjoy 16 million views because his motion graphics skills are impressive. It went viral because viewers believed that’s what robots can do.
Even though I make CG all the time for work and play, I was fooled.

I read that it was CG, understood that it was CG, quickly imagined the steps needed to set up the animation, and then BELIEVED IT WAS REAL.

This is a tangled mess. Fortunately the solution is already available, and already mandated in the context of advertising. When an endorsement is simulated by an actor, the ad clearly and constantly shows a warning notice. When a fast car is shown doing idiotic risky shit that nobody in their right mind should ever do, the ad clearly and constantly shows "Professional driver on closed course."

Just apply the same regulation to CG simulations.

Why did the videophone take so long?

I've asked the Y-long question about sound recording. Edison's first phonograph was equally usable as recorder and player. The office version (Dictaphone) remained record-play, but the home version instantly became play only. Why did home recording take so long to return? The answer is that home recording never returned. We have the tech built into cell phones and computers, but we still don't feel the need to record our own voices.

Similar question about the videophone.

Here's a 1930 experimental setup by Bell, found in the 1933 Arnold book that also prophesied a horrible TV utopia.

It was fully operational with two-way sound and two-way video, not needing a transmit/receive switch, as described in Arnold's incomprehensible grammarrhoid "English":
In one of these television-telephone booths a person seats himself before a frame in which he will see the face of the person with whom he is talking. His own face is rapidly scanned by a mild beam of blue light which reflects from his face to the photoelectric cells and gives rise to the current which transmits his image to the distant booth. There is no fierce glare to the scanning beam; and one is not annoyed by its presence and may even gaze directly at it without inconvenience.

The first thing which strikes the observer when he steps into the booth, which is lighted with a dim orange light to which the photoelectric cells are insensitive, is the absence of the usual telephone. Special telephone transmitters and receivers are concealed in the booths. One talks face to face to the distant person, and a hidden receiver speaks the words which seem to issue from his mouth.
And here's the more familiar 1960's videophone, proudly exhibited by Bell in several World's Fairs:

Hmm. The 1960's version looks a lot like a desktop computer. Why didn't the desktop computer evolve from the videophone? Why didn't the videophone become popular until 2000?

Same answer. Most people STILL don't use their cellphones as videophones. They use cellphones in two distinct ways. Most of the time it's an interactive TV or videogame system, communicating via text like a telegraph or a desktop computer. When people use it as a phone, they hold it to their head like an old-fashioned phone.

(I've never owned or handled a cellphone, so I'm just observing what others do.)

People don't like to record their own voice, and people don't like to show their face when talking on the phone. Both technologies have been available and rarely used since 1930, because human preferences haven't changed.

  We only need one diagnosis.

Ever since the founding of Freudian therapy, all of its theories and methods have been useless. Ever since the founding, outsiders and insiders have objectively proved OVER AND OVER AND OVER that it is useless.

Here's yet another disproof, via Eurekalert.

The main findings of the research were:

1. Psychiatric diagnoses all use different decision-making rules

2. There is a huge amount of overlap in symptoms between diagnoses

3. Almost all diagnoses mask the role of trauma and adverse events

4. Diagnoses tell us little about the individual patient and what treatment they need.

The authors conclude that diagnostic labelling represents 'a disingenuous categorical system'.
A good replacement:
Professor John Read, University of East London, said: "Perhaps it is time we stopped pretending that medical-sounding labels contribute anything to our understanding of the complex causes of human distress or of what kind of help we need when distressed."
The causes of human distress, and the kind of help we need when distressed. Concise and accurate.

This article doesn't mention the change from useless to MONSTROUS in the last 20 years. Now the DSM primarily serves as a tool for detecting and drugging and destroying dissidents. Unfashionable beliefs are OFFICIAL DISEASES. This is lethally important because Freudian psychiatry has OFFICIAL STANDING. When courts want to determine the "sanity" of a criminal or a dissident, Freudians make the OFFICIAL decision.

There is only one validly diagnosable psychiatric disorder: Psychiatry.

  The champion

Speaking of truth-tellers, Ann Widdecombe is the champion truth-teller right now. She never allows a flat assertion to sail through unquestioned, never bites the poisoned apple.

This interview is classic.

At one point the "male" journalist unit fires a standard idiotic talking point at Ann. She disassembles the talking point and hands it back. The "male" unit says "I don't understand."

Ann doesn't bother to explain AGAIN, just says "I'm sorry that you don't understand."

Beautiful contrast in body language. The "male" unit feels cold and humiliated. He doesn't even understand why he doesn't understand. Ann is cozily ensconced in truth.

I trust her truth by EXPERIENCE, which is the only way of judging truth. She is the ONLY politician in the world who speaks the truth about prison and crime. All others, regardless of good or bad intentions, are totally removed from reality.

  Perot RIP

Ross Perot, out of public life for many years, has died of natural causes.

As a sort of funeral cortege, let's see if we can place him in the lineup of Deepstate's victims.

1. Harding broke up Wilson's bureaucracies, imposed tariffs, and supported non-intervention. Deepstate unquestionably ethicuted him, and possibly killed him.

2. Ike pulled out of Deepstate's Korean war and supported non-intervention elsewhere. Deepstate heartattacked him, and Nixon took over.

3. JFK and RFK tried to expose Deepstate. Both got killed.

4. George Romney had been telling the truth about offshoring LONG before anyone else saw the problem. He told the truth about Vietnam, so Deepstate unpersoned him, made him unfit for public consumption.

5. George Wallace told the truth about pretty much everything. He was assassinated but barely survived, permanently disabled.

6. Reagan offended Deepstate in ways** that we still don't know about. Bush Senior assassinated him. Unfortunately for Bush, his family-owned assassin wasn't as competent as Oswald, so Reagan was weakened instead of killed. Bush Senior took over the government de facto, and later by "election".

7. Perot told the truth about offshoring and globalism. Bush Senior unpersoned him, made him unfit for public consumption.

Does Trump belong in this list? No, he's the opposite. He's working FOR Deepstate.

Nixon remains the only mystery, the only confused picture. He offended Deepstate in '48 by exposing FBI "soviet" agents. Deepstate never forgave him and ultimately unpersoned him. But in the interim he served Deepstate in '56 by taking the reins from Ike, and then gave Deepstate ALL OF ITS WISHES AND DREAMS in the '70s. Despite his heroic service, the old Hiss grudge was the only thing that counted in the end.

= = = = =

** Best guess for Reagan's offense would be the same 1948 hearings where JFK and RFK and Nixon were exposing FBI "soviets". Reagan wasn't in professional politics yet, but he was helping HUAC to expose the agents in Hollywood.

  Good prediction after all

The early stages of any communication technology inspire grandiose elite fuckheads to dream of a world where everyone is reduced to elite fuckhead idiocy.

A new item at American Radio History contains a beautifully horrible example. Arnold's 1933 handbook of advertising includes a chapter on the glorious promise of television. The author imagines the TV Utopia that awaits us in 1940:
I can easily anticipate special music of the operatic type written exclusively for broadcasting. No longer will it be necessary to compress a three-hour presentation of some famous opera into the period of an hour. Much of this will apply to our commercial programs of the future.

Instead of being a miscellaneous collection of disassociated items brought together for the sake of holding the attention of an audience for a limited time, there will be presented musical, dramatic and educational programs written for presentation where both eye and ear reception will be taken into account.
Jesus. What a grotesque monster. NOBODY really likes LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG operas. Fashionable fuckheads watch LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG operas because it's the fashionable thing to do. Radio could ALREADY present LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG operas in 1933. Short pieces weren't compelled by technical limitations; short pieces were compelled by HUMAN NATURE.

Normal people have other things to do. They listen to radio while washing dishes or changing diapers or fixing the car. They want ENTERTAINMENT, which means DISTRACTION from the dull hard stinky necessities of life. Radio in 1933 was already doing a damn good job of providing sane and clean entertainment, including a lot more classical music and serious discussion than any mass media provides now.
When the 1940 that I have described shall have arrived, we are likely to be in the midst of a new social and economic order.
Shall have is an excellent globaleth, a symptom of satanic neocon grammarrhoids.

New social and economic order is awfully familiar. In 1933 one new social and economic order was well underway in Stalin's Russia, and another new social and economic order was starting in Hitler's Germany.
Nations will no longer be disassociated units, but may be convened on a few hours' notice at a conference where views may be exchanged and visible indications of approval witnessed.
The perpetual idiotic dream of participatory democracy. Modern "libertarians" have finally achieved it. A conference where views may be exchanged and visible indications of approval witnessed is PRECISELY Facebook's stated mission. Exchange verbatim repetitions of Correct views, hit the Like button. Try to exchange an Incorrect view, and the conference disassociates your unit.

So this fuckhead was a good predictor after all, but his prediction wasn't the utopia that he idiotically imagined.

= = = = =

Later: No, I'm wrong. No paradox, no irony, no failure. The new social and economic order IS utopia for fuckheads like Norman Corwin and this author. They are in charge of the utopia. That's the whole fucking point. Exterminating billions of Deplorables IS utopia for demonic psychopaths.

  Social Darwinism at its best

A writer at the Sounding Line, a less famous competitor of ZeroHedge, has assembled a video showing all the rulers of France from 500 AD to today. The earlier ones are paintings, later are photographs.

One sharp line stands out. The hereditary monarchs are either delicate and sickly or soft and effeminate. In 1300 years, only two of them look like they could throw a punch or tolerate a bit of bad weather: Pepin le Bref and Louis XIV.

The list doesn't depict the Revolutionary leaders, treating them as 'the Directorate'. The pictures resume with Napoleon. In 1873 the first non-hereditary president is Adolphe Thiers. The phenotype instantly changes. Thiers looks like a man who could handle himself, and nearly all of the non-hereditary presidents are equally solid. Macron is the first revert to the delicate monarchical type.

Later constants and variables thought: It's possible that the painting vs photograph line is mainly responsible for the difference. Perhaps royal painters were ordered to show the monarch as holy, which was manifested as delicacy. But if that was true, then the painters of Pepin and Louis violated the order.

  Full recapture

Greece has firmly elected a new PM. Mitsotakis isn't familiar to me, but a BBC article clarifies. The Mitsotakis dynasty has been part of the ruling class for a long time, though not as famous as the Papandreou and Karamanlis dynasties.

All you need to know:
This was a venture capitalist, ex-McKinsey consultant educated at Harvard and Stanford in the US, who appeared very much part of the old guard.
A copy of Macron. Total recapture by EU and the bankers. Victory for Soros, who first occupied Macedonia, then leveraged a peculiar 2300-year-old trademark dispute to break the weak Tsipras government in Greece.

  Why so upset?

I don't understand why everyone is so upset over the girl who licked the ice cream. She was just following instructions. The label said FRENCH VANILLA, so she Frenched the Vanilla.

Seriously, it's no different from any produce in a store. Hands are covered with bacteria. Every tomato and apple gets "tampered" by lots of bacteria-covered hands before your bacteria-covered hands pick it up and put it in your basket. Tongues and fingers don't carry the same bacteria, but that isn't a meaningful distinction.

"Product tampering" is a remarkably long-lasting moral panic, creating a whole bunch of laws and a whole bunch of expense and inconvenience, all from ONE crime committed by ONE criminal about 30 years ago. Because ONE criminal put poison in Tylenol containers, ALL containers are hard to open and sometimes impossible to open. Though nobody measures it, a whole lot of injuries have resulted from using knives and scissors and pliers to open those "tamper-proof" containers.

Storage is the heart of civilization

Noticed a badly done graph on corporate bankruptcies at ZH. The graph doesn't adjust the assets for inflation, so it's useless.

There's an even stupider description on a currently relevant item. One of PGE's bankruptcies happened in 2001, as a result of "drought that decreased hydroelectric output."

No. Southern California is ALWAYS in a drought, some years worse than others. When your CONSTANT CONDITION is low rainfall, you need to add ENOUGH reservoir capacity to keep your generators going.

PGE failed to do that. They chose** Gaian craziness over civilization. Instead of building more dams, they REMOVED some of the existing dams, pretending to replace the input with wind and solar.

Wind and solar CANNOT power civilization because they aren't steady. Wind is actually COUNTER-steady. Wind is weakest exactly when you NEED extra electricity.

Civilization requires steady and reliable power sources.

I've made this point before. Storage is the heart of civilization.

When you have a steady supply of power and material and labor, you can start building a SURPLUS of value. A good season can be stored to get you through a bad season. Grain elevators, oil storage tanks, dams, savings accounts.

In basic economic terms, civilization happens when you have a reliable SURPLUS of value. The SURPLUS can be used to build new farms and factories, and to build better and more beautiful cities and parks and schools. Without the SURPLUS, civilization collapses.

When you're constantly behind the curve, living hand to mouth or deep in debt, every slight perturbation kills you.

Western debtism guarantees that the whole system is constantly on the negative side of the ledger, constantly relying on bankers to supply loans or the central bank to print money. Just-in-time inventory, wind and solar "power", zero interest on savings, arbitrage instead of grain storage. Civilization is impossible, and independent decisions are impossible. NYC controls everything.

Sharia and Soviet systems are firmly planted on the SURPLUS side, with government taking part of the surplus to fund its operations. Monopolizing the surplus is prohibited. In Sharia the prohibition is cultural and legal; in Soviet the stock traders simply don't exist so they can't slaughter the world.

= = = = =

** Footnote on chose Gaian craziness. PGE can't claim that it was meekly obeying EPA genocide. PGE is big enough to buy regulators and break rules with impunity. It breaks all other rules all the time. When it follows Gaia instead of rationality, the choice is voluntary and intentional.

No, people didn't think that way.

Article in Aeon reports that "scientists" are sloooooooooooooowly catching up with knowledge that humans have possessed for thousands of years.
Now, having come up with some sneaky new ways to investigate animal memory, scientists are closer than ever to answering that question once and for all. In the past decade, researchers studying animals from the far corners of the animal kingdom – western scrub-jays, dolphins, elephants, even dogs – have come to the same conclusion: at least some animals are capable of these human-like memories of past experience. ‘For a long time, people thought that nonhuman animals were not capable of forming episodic memories,’ Jonathon Crystal, a neuroscientist at the Indiana University, told me. ‘That default view is not correct.’
No, people didn't think that. Only "scientists" and Catholics believe that non-human animals are inanimate mechanisms.

People who WORK with animals have always understood and USED the episodic memory of animals. A milkman's horse or a seeing-eye dog remembers and implements a LONG sequence of actions and places.

A more interesting question is the genetically implanted sequence in some fish, who know how to reach their designated spawning location through thousands of miles and hundreds of tributary branchings. (When going downstream you merge automatically. Upstream you have to pick the correct branch.)

Later: Note how the milk horse in the cited video negotiates a sharp turn in a narrow space flawlessly. Like a semi driver, he knows where each point of the vehicle is without looking.

  It's all derivatives now

Cited by the Tesla skeptics...
Deloitte, an accounting firm, estimates that the outstanding value of loans against art in America reached $17bn-20bn in 2017, up 13% from the previous year. Industry insiders say such lending has continued to grow at double-digit rates since then.

“Ten or 20 years ago it never crossed your mind to leverage your art collection. But the word is out now,” says Evan Beard of Bank of America Private Bank, the institution with the highest outstanding value of art-secured loans. As interest rates have fallen, borrowing has become more attractive. Open public registers make it easy to check if art is encumbered. Price estimates and auction results available online since the early 2000s have made underwriting easier. In America collectors can even keep encumbered art on their wall.
Pawned paintings used to be a mark of faded genteel aristocracy, not a mark of satanic fuckheads.

As I wrote earlier in a similar context:
EW Marland, who sacrificed part of his own wealth to cultivate Ponca, had a huge collection of paintings in his mansion. After JP Morgan bought him out, he lost gumption and frittered away his investments. He died nearly broke. His younger wife Lydie was loyal to the manor and the name. For a while after EW died, she wandered the country living on the kindness of strangers, frequently pawning and redeeming the one painting she had kept. Late in life she returned home, and the Roman convent that owned the mansion allowed her to live out her last years in the gatehouse.

In Poncan myth, Lydie's pawned painting was the distilled soul of the noble lord.

Now a rich idiot casually buys one random painting for the same price as all the houses in Ponca.

Paintings used to be esteemed as real value, the result of trained and practiced talent. Now paintings, like everything else, are just tools for arbitrary arbitrage.

  Seismology is worthless.

Some branches of science have taken off their theory goggles and started observing reality. Seismologists haven't. Their prediction ability has NEVER IMPROVED. It's still zero. They can't even POSTDICT properly.

After the 6.4 yesterday, seismologists said there was a 9% chance of a larger quake following. A larger quake followed. Now they're saying there's a 5% chance of a larger quake following this one.

When your 9% turns out to be 100%, you should AT LEAST adjust the next prediction upward. Seismologists do not observe reality.

Another seismologist said that these quakes are not on the San Andreas, so there's ZERO chance of a big quake along the San Andreas. This is an ancient and unshakeable bigotry among seismologists. No quake can ever cause another quake. Each quake exists in its own universe. Every quake is strictly an independent Poisson data point.

Sheer nonsense. Or rather shear nonsense. We've had many examples of large quakes triggering distant quakes in areas that had been 'waiting' for a quake. Simple physics requires it. When the waves are strong enough to do damage 100 miles away, they're also strong enough to break the static friction of ANY fault that's stressed and ready to slip.

USA STRONG seismologists have studiously ignored work by Chinese and Russian seismologists who have managed to predict quakes days in advance by observing animal behavior. USA STRONG seismologists do not believe in life. Animals are independent Poisson data points without senses and brains.

When a branch of science has been active for 300 years without ONE SINGLE SUCCESS, it's time to stop funding it.

New trick from the dream scripter

Occasionally my dream scripter will pick up the incoming audio from the OTR episode currently playing, and transpose the scene into an entirely new place. This time the scripter added another type of transposition.

The episode deals with an escaped fugitive who carjacked a local cop, traded clothes and wallets, and handcuffed the cop. The FBI dudes have found the cop and criminal in an abandoned house, where the FBI dudes are trying to untangle who's who.

When listening in waketime, I have a standard mental setting for the abandoned house and standard images of the characters. Tonight the dream scripter transposed the scene into a greasy-spoon truck stop cafe. The deputy and criminal were sitting opposite each other in a Formica booth. New element: The criminal was a deer, complete with antlers. This didn't seem unusual or salient.

Where did the deer come from? I might have seen this headline at RealClearScience during the 1.5 seconds RCS gives you before slapping the paywall notice across the screen.

Subliminal reading can slip into dream mode without hitting consciousness.

  PPB

Via UncommonDescent,
It is estimated that marine plants produce between 70 and 80 percent of the oxygen in the atmosphere. Nearly all marine plants are single celled, photosynthetic algae. Yup, that’s right, good ol’ scum on the pond…green gak…..slip slimein’ away. Even marine seaweed is many times colonial algae. They are a bunch of single cells trying to look like a big plant, but they are really individuals.

We need marine algae a whole lot more than they need us. Think about it, 70 percent to 80 percent of all the oxygen we breathe comes from algae!
If a major part of the oxygen comes from algae, they are also consuming a major part of CO2.

Simple conclusion: Environmental laws should encourage more algae.

As fucking always, environmental genocidists are doing the exact opposite. I've been bitching endlessly about the ENVIRONMENTAL destruction caused by the monstrous city dysgovernment of Spokane. Over the last decade they've wasted $200 million building swamps and flood generators inside the city. We need swamps and floods to prevent the city sewers from emitting a few PARTS PER BILLION of phosphorus. Why do we need to eliminate PPB of phosphorus? Because phosphorus might possibly encourage algae blooms downstream in the river and lakes.

The whole murder plot failed the last time we had a heavy rain. Despite the floodmakers and swamps, the city sewer system still had to open the valves and let untreated sewage into the river for a while.

So now we've wasted $200 million that could have gone into police and schools. We have more mosquitos and floods than before. We've PERHAPS decreased the algae in lakes, which INCREASES CO2 in the atmosphere; but the whole fucking setup fails exactly when it's intended to work, so in fact we probably haven't changed the CO2 at all, which doesn't matter any fucking way because CO2 is a consequence of internal warming, not a cause of anything except plant growth.

Crazy beyond crazy beyond crazy beyond crazy beyond crazy. Immeasurably bonkers, hyperinfinitely evil.

Why do we skip half the measure?

Watching online coverage of latest LA quake.

Random metrology thought.

Duration is a major part of the intensity of a quake. Why does the Richter scale only include intensity and not duration? Each wiggle does more damage to structures, and a longer duration builds up resonances that multiply the effect.

The same is true of windstorms, rainstorms and snowstorms.

We measure [duration X intensity] for rain and snow. We don't count drops per minute. We record total drops from the storm.

For wind and quakes we skip duration.

  Another non-mystery

Via Eurekalert, another "baffling" survey that isn't baffling at all. Like the lost wallet survey, it's just self-interest.
"We had expected people to be attracted to principled, politically active business leaders but we were surprised to find that graduates did not necessarily need to share their opinions to find them appealing," said Andrew Crane, Professor of Business and Society at the University of Bath School of Management, one of the three authors of the study.

"If we take an issue like gun control, people are much more likely to want to work for a company when the CEO stands up for greater gun control, regardless of whether the jobseekers themselves are pro- or anti-gun control. We see exactly the same effect for other issues like same-sex marriage and immigration. Employees want their CEOs to take the more liberal, humanistic stand whatever their own position might be. It seems CEO principles are counting for more and more in today's jobs market," Crane said.
Young jobseekers have grown up in a world of SHARE VALUE economics. They never experienced real profit-based capitalism. They understand that the only measure of success for a company is ABJECT SUBMISSION TO SOROS. ("Humanistic" = SOROS.) They want to work for a successful company so they can grab a piece of Satan's hellish money, even if their own meaningless opinions are not yet fully aligned with Satan. Don't worry, Satan will phaselock you.

  Worth noticing

I'm completely ignorant and dumb about military strategy, so I don't bother thinking or talking about it. Nevertheless, when I bump into a strategic fact that isn't normally mentioned, I can see the logic.

From Ilargi, who is dumb about some things but smart about strategy:
But while you weren’t looking some things changed, irreversibly so. The US and Europe are no longer the undisputed and overwhelming global military power they once were. Russia has become a target they cannot even consider attacking anymore, because their armies, assembled in NATO, wouldn’t stand a chance.
Not usually mentioned.

A large proportion of our soldiers and expensive weapons are placed in dozens of bases surrounding Russia, in a classic multi-front attack formation. Not just Europe, but several of the central Asian Stans. All of them are within easy range of Russian tactical missiles. If we started bombing from any of those locations, Russia could instantly take out all of our forward bases. Now that Russia has hypersonic missiles and we don't, the instantly becomes even more certain.

  Why I don't own a gun

Speaking of hardwired responses to fireworks....

Some big booms are happening in the neighborhood right now. My hardwired response is not to crawl under the bed. My hardwired response is to KILL THE FUCKING ASSHOLE.

If I owned a gun I would go out and find the asshole and KILL THE ASSHOLE. Civilization would gain hugely from the deletion of a noisy asshole, but I would end up in prison for an unnecessary act of justice.

Nature takes care of assholes pretty well.

So I don't own a gun.

Incidentally, the Darwin Awards website has come back to life after several years of dormancy. Good reading.

Not quite as obvious as it looks

Lots of online articles today about dogs and cats versus fireworks.

For instance:
That’s because dogs, like humans, are hardwired to be afraid of sudden, loud noises. It is what keeps them safe. Some dogs, though, take that fear to the extreme with panting, howling, pacing, whining, hiding, trembling and even self-injury or escape. And, unlike humans, they don’t know that the fanfare on the Fourth is not a threat. Dogs hear the fireworks and process it as if their world is under siege.
LIteral hardwiring is unquestionably true. Major sections of the auditory system are devoted to analyzing and switching sudden noises, pre-empting regular audio programming, breaking sleep, and motivating big movements in muscles and viscera.

The thunder response makes sense for mammals who live in areas with frequent thunderstorms. Humans developed first in warm wet places, so the connection is easy. But canines developed in cold places. Dogs and wolves know what snow is, and generally enjoy snow. Lightning is rare in snowy places. By the usual model of "evolution", the thunder response should have faded out of the genome.

Later thought: Why do canines enjoy snow? I'd think snow would be a threat to survival. Obviously I'm wrong and Nature is right, but why?

  Meta-delousing a yak

Not quite a full yakshave, so I'll call it delousing a yak.

Previous item about NYC was amplified if not inspired by my current bit of work.

The NYC publisher who had handled my courseware was LBOd by JPMorgan and stopped carrying the entire speech and hearing subject area. So the text author went back to the small family-owned publisher who had started this series back in 1996. The small outfit is vastly easier to deal with. No corporate imperatives, no editing based on interdepartmental rivalries or Share Value. They simply want the best possible product.

A proper Natural Law purpose. More life, more value, more beauty. I've been working harder and happier in harmony with this purpose.

But the NYC publisher, typically Insatiable, isn't satisfied. Even though the contract clearly turned over all rights to the new publisher, they aren't bound by contracts. NYC is never bound by laws and contracts. They "may" want to reserve rights to some illustrations made by their in-house artists in 2012.

These "may reserve" images are fortunately a small fraction of the total, about 70 out of 1200. But I still have to find replacements. Some of them replaced earlier images done by the original (and now current) publisher. Some were new topics. I found the earlier images and moved them back into the courseware, with adjusted labels and pointers, and now I'm making new 3D images and animations for the non-equivalent new topics. My 3D is significantly clearer than the 2012 sketches, and probably should have been done ANYWAY.

Yesterday I made a pretty decent animation for the process of concussion (coup and contrecoup) replacing an unclear image in the "may reserve" set. When I started to move it into the courseware setup, I realized that the facing text page says nothing about concussions! This somehow made it through several years of proofreading. In fact there's nothing at all about concussions in the underlying hardcopy text. This must have been a 'sidebar' idea that was rejected at some point.

Now that I've added value and clarity, I'm not going to waste the work. Concussion is an important and relevant topic. I'll write an accompanying page and insert it.

AND THEN: When I started writing this blog post, I wanted to modify the yak-shaving image to show Polistra picking a bug with tweezers. BUT: it turns out that I had somehow deleted the month in my archives that contains the Poser files for the yak pic. So I just reused the shaving pic.

Just as before, the shave generates a metashave.

  Sabertooth vs Carver

A nice comparison of the old inorganic bigotry about life versus the new FACTUAL approach focusing on PURPOSE.

Two headlines at Eurekalert:

The 'case against consciousness' violates a basic rule of philosophy. You simply can't say that anyone or anything else is conscious or unconscious. The only partly valid external measure is REM sleep indicating dreams.

As usual in Savannah Sabertooth "evolutionary" shit, the article focuses on energy expenditure:
"The biggest danger of anthropomorphizing plants in research is that it undermines the objectivity of the researcher," Taiz says. "What we've seen is that plants and animals evolved very different life strategies. The brain is very expensive organ, and there's absolutely no advantage to the plant to have a highly developed nervous system."
You don't need philosophy to OBSERVE that life doesn't give a fuck about energy efficiency. Most OBSERVABLE behaviors of living creatures are PRECISELY CONTRARY to energy efficiency. Energy isn't the point. Creating ORDER inside the boundaries of the organism is the point, and life constantly wastes HUGE amounts of energy to create ORDER and PURPOSE.

= = = = =

The article on homing behavior by stem cells doesn't start with any assumptions. These researchers simply OBSERVED what living cells ACTUALLY DO.
"We know that some bacterial cells contain properties that enable them to detect and 'home' to diseased tissue. For example, the oral bacteria found in our mouths can occasionally cause strep throat. If it enters the blood stream it can 'home' to damaged tissue in the heart causing infective endocarditis. Our aim was to replicate the homing ability of bacteria cells and apply it to stem cells."
Unsurprisingly, the bacteria are SEEKING A GOAL. They are working toward a PURPOSE. You don't need philosophy or anthropomorphizing to OBSERVE this. It's right there on the surface if you just LOOK ABOUT YOU and TAKE HOLD OF THE THINGS THAT ARE HERE and TALK TO THEM and LET THEM TALK TO YOU.

In simple terms, the first researchers are observing nothing but their own bigotries and delusions. The second researchers are observing reality.

LIFE IS PURPOSE.

= = = = =

Semi-relevant: This moment among the old dogs at the Senior Dogs Gathering Room illustrates order defending order. Lolli starts tearing up a pillow. The other dogs yell at her to stop, and then try to tell the humans about it. "Teacher! Teacher! Lolli is tearing things up again!" There's no energy efficiency in either of these actions. Tearing up a pillow is wasted effort, and snitching on the culprit is wasted effort. If you focus on energy you can't tell the difference. If you focus on order you know what's happening.

Thanks Ralph 132, Barreto Principle edition

Via ZH, an appropriate item for alleged so-called quote "independence" unquote day.
A man that wound up staying at the hotel for a year rent free under an obscure legal loophole is sparring with the owners of the hotel after, in June 2018, he stayed at the hotel for one night and then asked for a six-month lease under an obscure section of the city's rent stabilization laws.

Now, he claims to run "Mickey Barreto Missions" out of the address, has been demanding rent from two restaurant tenants, has tried to take over hotel operations and has attempted to get the building's bank accounts transferred to him. He even summoned the fire department at one point because of a nonexistent gas leak, trying to get the building evacuated.

The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity, who owns the hotel, fears that "Barreto could take out a lien or mortgage on the building" or sell it to an innocent third party.
The article slides right past The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity without saying what it really is. Checking: Is that the Moonies? Yup.

In other words, the building is already "owned" by a totally fraudulent religious organization who used "legal" loopholes to gain control. The current totally fraudulent religious organization is trying to reject an EQUALLY FRAUDULENT claim by another totally fraudulent religious organization.

NYC. Fraud piled on evil piled on fraud piled on evil for FOUR HUNDRED YEARS. Evil infecting and infesting and EXTERMINATING the honest and normal and godly parts of the world for FOUR HUNDRED YEARS.

No exorcism is possible.

= = = = = START FUCKING REPRINT:

Polistra thinks it's time for a new Manhattan Project. Or rather a Project Manhattan. A vast secret enterprise designing a method to project NYC out of the universe.

Push it out of the earth, accelerate it beyond the solar system, guide it to the nearest black hole where it can be handed to some other universe.

Since the very start, NYC has been the enemy of civilization, the enemy of Natural Law, the enemy of the universe. NYC has been the center of destruction aimed against Deplorables of all eras. The Insatiables of NYC have switched ethnicity over the centuries. First Dutch, then English, then Jewish, now transitioning to Hindu. Always trader types, always exterminating the non-traders, the building and fixing and praying people. The 1776 revolution broke down natural Parliamentary rule and common law, replacing them by insane theories. Madman Lincoln's war burned down half the country and slaughtered 20% of its people to raise the share value of railroad stocks. 1929 and 2008, among many other bubbles, exterminated the skills and lives of farmers and mechanics.

Every time the non-traders had a chance for security and peace and prosperity, NYC's Insatiables came along and smashed everything.

Revenge is precisely 400 years overdue. Project Manhattan!

= = = = = END FUCKING REPRINT.

Thanks, Ralph!

Though I use Poser every day ... more precisely every HOUR of every day ... for both work and play, I hadn't paid attention to the various online forums in many months. Too busy working in Poser. Today, from sheer boredom, I checked the Renderosity forum and found a truly surprising bit of news. Renderosity has ACQUIRED Poser from its latest owner. There's not much info or detail yet.

First thought: This is like a farmers coop or mutual insurance company, where the users take control of the company.

Second thought: No, it's not exactly the users. It's more like a major Chevy dealer acquiring GM.

Coop or not, it's an interesting arrangement. If it works, it should give more control to the users because Rendo has been in direct commercial contact with the users for 20 years. Dealers know what the customers want.

Poser's previous owner, Smith Micro, didn't have a feel for the graphics business. They primarily do storage and backup systems.

  Strong stuff

A concise and POWERFUL comment from Putin. Most of it is expected from the only adult leader in the world... but the first bit about architecture and harmony is unexpected and brilliant.

= = = = =

Sidenote, related to Putin's comments about the Hermitage. Here's an astonishing one-man Hermitage. An old soldier spent his life making BRILLIANT AND SERIOUS CLASSICAL ART and furniture. Some of the frescos are on the ceiling of his house, which looks like it's in danger of failing because he didn't maintain the outside. Seems like an opportunity for historical preservationists to fix the house before all the glorious art collapses.

  Giant non-lookback

This year is the 50th anniversary of my Mansfield year, and today is the day I moved from the county jail into Mansfield. I'm torn between some sort of writing versus the basic DON'T LOOK BACK.

Choosing the latter, here's a beautiful exorcism exercise from Zuhlsdorf, the only remaining representative of God's side within the Roman hierarchy. He proposes that each major bishop should form a giant sign of the cross over his entire diocese, crossing the territory with a counterforce to Satan.

No bishops will take up the idea, because Zuhlsdorf is the only remaining representative of God's side within the Roman hierarchy. Nevertheless the proposal may lead to similar exercises by non-hierarchical Romans on God's side, if any exist.

I hope he goes all the way!

Via ZH as usual:
After images of the shoe were posted online, Mr. Kaepernick, a Nike endorser, reached out to company officials saying that he and others felt the Betsy Ross flag is an offensive symbol because of its connection to an era of slavery,
Hey Colin! You're only scratching the surface. You need to carry out this principle TOTALLY. All languages and writing systems and monetary systems evolved in societies with slaves, because ALL societies had slaves before 1750.

So you need to stop talking and writing, and stop receiving money.

Perhaps you could communicate using quantum qubits, and get paid only in Bitcoin. But quantum qubits and Bitcoin were designed using math symbols developed before 1750, and carried on wires and electrical systems that were designed in America before 1861, so they're also taboo. You need to develop a method of communicating and payment that doesn't depend in any way on anything that happened before right now. But right now is defined by clocks and calendars that have been around for 5000 years. Good luck, dude.

Later: Other commenters caught the vastly more important point which I totally missed. Nike shoes are made by ACTUAL SLAVES RIGHT NOW. Colin has no problem with MAKING MILLIONS OF BLOOD DOLLARS BY DIRECTLY ENDORSING ACTUAL SLAVE LABOR RIGHT NOW, but has a big problem with symbols vaguely connected with places where slavery was practiced 250 years ago.

  Great news for anti-vaxxers!

A global coalition of genocidal monsters has declared war on dissidents.

The tone of the statement is warlike and military, impelling full mobilization of all government resources to SLAUGHTER ALL DOUBTERS.

The list of genocidal mass-murderers signing the statement includes a "Professor of Planetary Health" and a "William H. Foege Professor of Global Health". Nuff said.

This is guaranteed to redouble and strengthen the resistance.

I wonder if this statement was quietly funded by the anti-vaxxers? If not, it should be.

Just to clarify which side I'm on, this and this will do.

Not crazy at all, just infinitely evil.

Via ZH:
49-year-old Roy Larner screamed “f*** you, I’m Millwall” as he defended himself against jihadists who ended up killing 8 people and injuring 38 others during the horrific attack in London two years ago. Following the attack, Larner revealed that the terrorists had shouted, “This is for Allah” and “Islam, Islam, Islam” during the rampage.

Now Larner himself is being treated as a potential terrorist by the UK government.

Because he was allegedly contacted by far-right anti-Islam activists, Larner has been put on the government’s Prevent terror watchlist over fears he might become an extremist. They treat me like a terrorist but I’m not political at all,” said Larner, who revealed he has been forced to attend de-radicalization classes and is being monitored by the police.

The United Kingdom is so addled with political correctness, it treats those who fought back against Islamic jihadists as terrorists. Let the sheer intensity of that level of clown world insanity sink right in.
If you know how things work, it's not insanity at all. Sorosian lands are exterminating Muslims everywhere. We're killing Muslims by the million in Iraq and Syria and Afghanistan. The "Islamic terrorists" who operate within UK and US are government agents. Some of them were originally Muslim, others were "radicalized" by Deepstate. All are working for Deepstate to MAKE ISLAM LOOK HORRIBLE so we can slaughter real Muslims without public resistance.

Larner was fighting against Deepstate agents, mistakenly believing that they were real Muslims working for Islam. He is being punished for disloyalty to Deepstate, even though he didn't know who he was fighting.

It's an old story. In the '50s Nixon and McCarthy were punished for unmasking fake "Soviet agents" who were actually Deepstate agents assigned to make Communism look horrible.

  Jesus. We never learn.

More local governments hit by ransomware.

In the first fucking place, computer security is NOT DIFFICULT. Pay for the best antivirus, preferably from a non-Sorosian company like Kaspersky or AVG. Don't click on spam. Keep important data rigorously and PHYSICALLY disconnected from the web.

In the second fucking place, PAY THE TWO DOLLARS. Get the ransomware turned off. Even if the Two Dollars is actually half a million, it's still cheaper than being down for weeks while you rebuild your entire system without most of the data. Paying won't "encourage the criminals". They're already encouraged.

In the third fucking place, PAYING IS PART OF CATCHING. This has always been central to police procedure for old-fashioned kidnappings. Make the payoff immediately. Even if you don't get the victim back, the payment gives you a new link to the criminals. You know where the envelope with "unmarked" (actually marked) bills went, and you can track the criminals from there. If you do get the victim back, the victim can tell you something about the criminals and where they took him.

Obvious parallel. Paying via bitcoin is paying via NSA. The "unmarked" digital units are actually marked. You can track the transaction. After the computers are functioning again, you can try to trace the source of the malware.

I wish I could give proper credit....

The most important thing I learned in the last few years is the Sucker Filter. I wish I could remember who wrote about it. I like to give proper credit for valid and brilliant ideas. The Sucker Filter explains all sorts of otherwise mysterious phenomena, and it's not well known or publicly discussed.

Latest example: A fake "peace think tank".
Since peaceful foreign policy was a founding principle of the United States, it’s appropriate that the name of this think tank harken back to history. It will be called the Quincy Institute, an homage to John Quincy Adams, who in a seminal speech on Independence Day in 1821 declared that the United States “goes not abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She is the champion and vindicator only of her own.” The Quincy Institute will promote a foreign policy based on that live-and-let-live principle.
Sounds good, until:
The institute plans to open its doors in September and hold an official inauguration later in the autumn. Its founding donors — Soros’s Open Society Foundation and the Charles Koch Foundation — have each contributed half a million dollars to fund its takeoff.
Soros and Koch are identical demons. Both are imperialist warmonger omnicidal robber barons posing as "philanthropists". Both seek to destroy the world. Soros has been vastly more effective, exterminating about 20 million Negative Externalities so far.

Normally demon "philanthropists" hide behind a multi-layer structure of dummy companies and dummy foundations. Not this time. They're right out in the open.

Sucker Filter. An efficient scam comes at you with a brazenly obvious fraud, like the classic Nigerian Prince. If you're dumb enough to think the obvious fraud is worth checking out, you're worth cultivating. If you detect the lie and avoid the click, you weren't worth cultivating anyway.

Therefore: This 'Quincy Institute' is an agent provocateur, assigned to make localism and peace look horrible.

In other words, it's a DECOY, a TRAP, a POISONED APPLE. It is designed to sap the energy and waste the effort and misdirect the actions of the real peace movement.

= = = = =

A bit later: Looks like a full-court sucker press. Kristol is "bashing" the Soros project to give it credibility. The suckers at TAC, who really should know better, are going along for the ride. Or maybe they're not suckers at all....

In either case, it's a good time for this:

  The Hillary effect

Zuesse, as usual, DOESN'T miss the point. He sometimes speaks a little too broadly, attributing evil to "billionaires" instead of Sheldon Adelson, but he sees the effect properly.

Here he's analyzing a UN report on refugee flows.
Figure 18, Major source countries of new asylum-seekers 2017-2018” shows that in 2018, the highest number of new asylum-applicants were from Venezuela, second-highest were from Afghanistan, third-highest were from Syria, and fourth-highest were from Iraq. All of those are lands that suffer from the US regime’s past and current aggressions. (Of course, everybody expects Iran to be the next.)
A chart he didn't cite shows a more refined correlation.

When Hillary took charge, refugee flows increased. After Obama fired Hillary, flows decreased. When the Clinton dynasty's Regent replaced the disloyal Obama, the proper Hillary level of genocide resumed.

Missing the point, the line, and the plane

Linked via RCS, an interesting correlation that seems to hold up across nations.
When he arrived, the suicide rates in his new home made him wonder: Was there something about the elevation that was affecting the way the brain functioned?

His theory didn’t catch on until he and his colleagues published a 2011 paper that looked at all 2,584 counties in the U.S. and found a correlation between average altitude and suicide rate over the previous 20 years. They found that if a county was below 2,000 feet, their suicide rates were about half of counties at 4,000 to 5,000 feet. The counties with the highest suicide rates were above 9,000 feet.

A subsequent study attempted to control for the other factors commonly thought to influence suicide rates, like gun ownership, poverty, availability of psychiatric care, population density, and health insurance status. Renshaw said they still found that altitude was an independent risk factor, calling the correlation “whoppingly strong.” Since then, there have been multiple studies that showed the same association, both on state and county levels. Similar findings have been reported in Spain, South Korea, and Austria.
Within the US, the pattern of suicide by county associates obviously and blatantly with two factors: Native tribes and post-industrial areas. If the "social" "scientists" think they've factored out poverty and status, they're missing the WHOLE FUCKING POINT of human perception. As fucking always.

Perception is a VECTOR, a differential. Perception measures DISTANCE between here and there, and TIME between now and then.

When everyone you see is poor, and you have always been poor, you don't feel poor.

When everyone you see is low status, and you have always been low status with no delusions or hopes of raising status, you don't feel low status.

Since "social" "scientists" do not know what LIFE is, they must assume an INORGANIC and INANIMATE cause for living behavior. So these "social" "scientists" assume that lack of oxygen is the cause. If we were discussing suicides among boiling pots of water, this would be a good explanation. But we are not discussing suicides among boiling pots of water. We are discussing suicides among LIVING humans.

= = = = =

How does altitude relate to status? Simple and universal. High status people seek high altitude. Low status people seek low altitude, or are forced down by high status people. If you're a low status person in a high altitude area, the difference between internal template and external senses is extreme. You feel your lowness much more sharply. And if you move INTO a high-status area, the vector is both spatial and temporal.
Around half of people who died by suicide had moved to Montana from other states, making space for a theory that a shift from low to high elevations was a risk factor. ... People shared anecdotes of lives lost to suicide in their families, sometimes occurring shortly after moves to higher elevation.
How do Injuns and post-industrial areas connect? Reservations are concentrated in mountain states and HILLbillies live in the HILLS. In this case altitude may be incidental. The relevant vector here is long-standing loss of usefulness. For Injuns, the reservation busted up a strong culture where everyone had a place and purpose. For Hillbillies, the destruction of industry removed all utility.

LIFE IS PURPOSE.

Speculative: Bridge jumping is a popular means of suicide here in Spokane. A quick way of relieving the tension of misfit altitude, nulling out the differential.
