  Plus c'est, but not quite

Is media bias new?

Fuck no.

But there is one difference. From Broadcasting Magazine, Aug 1964.
A request for public opinion on "prejudicial expressions" in CBS newscasts was voiced July 20 by Rex G. Howell, owner of KREX, Grand Junction, Colo., in a TV editorial. Mr. Howell, whose stations are CBS affiliates, said he had been registering protests with the network "for many months" over newscasts which "constituted opinion-making rather than reporting of factual news." He said: "We protested the snide manner in which Eric Sevareid interviewed Senator Goldwater, and the side comments frequently voiced by Walter Cronkite which seemed to convey the impression of extreme hostility toward the Arizona senator."

"We fervently wish," Mr. Howell said, "that Mr. Schorr and some of his other liberal colleagues would practice greater regard for the basic principles of fairness in journalism." The editorial quoted Mr. Howell's telegram to CBS President Frank Stanton. In it Mr. Howell said: "It is a source of great personal sorrow that the ideological differences between certain network personnel and the Republican nominee for the presidency has led to such unfortunate exchanges as to reflect upon our dedication to the principles of the fairness doctrine and our own sense of journalistic responsibility."
The one real difference: Howell headed a local station. Now no local station would complain. Everyone is on the same side. There are only ponents and pluponents, no opponents.

Another difference, at least in formalistic terms, is that Howell had the LAW on his side. CBS was violating the fairness doctrine and forcing local stations to participate in the violation.

Howell pointedly FOLLOWED the law by finding a local Democrat to give a counter-editorial after his own editorial.

= = = = =

Later: I looked to see if Sevareid vs Goldwater was available on Youtube. The specific interview wasn't there, but the search led to an even more perfect example of pluponents.

CBS recently ran an 'archive' feature from the '64 election, with a clip of Sevareid discussing media bias.

Headline:

Think media bias is a new issue? Think again: Here's a 1964 special hosted by CBS News correspondent Eric Sevareid, who speaks of "an ugly boil of hostility towards the press."

Media bias as defined by the media has NOT changed. As seen by CBS then and now, media bias means "an ugly boil of hostility toward the press" and nothing else. Deplorables are zits.

= = = = =

On a vastly more positive note, here's a 1975 interview of Howell by a Grand Junction oral history project. A fascinating big picture of radio from a thoughtful and objective man who was there at the start. He mentions one 'backwater' that I haven't read about: In the '20s the wire services like UP and AP refused to deal with the upstart radio industry. So a group of broadcasters formed their own coop news service, strictly by CW. When one station had a scoop, or read something important in their local newspaper, they sent the item to the other stations. Most early stations were founded by hams, so Morse was universal and natural. It would also have been semi-secret, not easy for casual listeners to intercept.

= = = = =

Personal: I mentioned Barry a few days ago, now he turns up again. It's odd that I still think of Barry on first-name terms. I supported him in '64, even though I was an ignorant young leftist then. Now that I'm a slightly less ignorant old populist, I still have positive feelings about him, though he would count as a tech-monster Libertarian in modern terms. In '64 he was probably serving as a pluponent provocateur, helping LBJ to steer the reluctant Dems into total war without feeling like warmongers. "We're not pro-war like those horrible Goldwater zits! We were reluctantly forced into total war by Tonkin Gulf."

Why do I still look at Barry in a positive light? Probably the ham radio thing, a SKILL-based guild that runs deeper than ideology.

NOW I SEE: And why have the modern monsters been wiping out SKILLS since 1975? Specifically because SKILL runs deeper than ethnicity or ideology. When people work together, using shared SKILLS on an absorbing project, ideology and race don't matter nearly as much. Now that all SKILLS have been offshored or obliterated, we have nothing but ethnicity and ideology, which are incurably and intentionally divisive. This also applies to schools, which led the way in eliminating all SKILL-based projects and job training. It's not surprising that schools have also led the way in ethnic and ideological division.

First vaguely allegedly "firm" action by a "court"

The Michigan supreme "court" has finally given an allegedly FIRM ruling to Demon Whitmer, ORDERING her to stop the holocaust IMMEDIATELY.

So far every single alleged counterforce has completely failed to act. Didn't even try, didn't even make tiny inaudible whispers of disapproval. "Courts" and "legislatures" have completely joined the holocaust. Everyone is on Satan's side, in the usual Robust Debate form. All discussions are auctions to bid up the killcount. All pluponents, no opponents.

This is the first nominal "opposition" by a "court" that would normally be obeyed by governors in a sane world.

It will be slightly interesting to see how Demon Whitmer will circumvent the "ruling". She doesn't need to do anything about it, since the supreme "court" can't order the National Guard to execute her. She just needs to continue killing and killing and killing and killing and orgasming and orgasming and orgasming. This is the best time in history for psychopaths.

= = = = =

Oct 14 update: Here's the workaround. Demon Whitmer handed off the rules to the state OSHA, thus forcing the "court" process to start over again. Nazi holocausters like to maintain a veneer of "legality", though it's really not needed.

There's only one cure for a psychopath.

  Now it's clear.

Tracing the technology of the Lodge precipitator and its later developers, I've been reading a British journal called World's Work. The magazine wasn't really about work, it was an overview of culture and science.

A column about the 1904 US election contains a surprise that verifies my Agent Provocateur suspicions of Jennings Bryan.

Earlier I wrote:

It's not clear from available documents whether influencers like Jennings Bryan were Agents Provocateurs or just poor economists. In fairness, they didn't have a lot of experimental data on the effects of breaking gold. Bubbles were common during pure gold periods. Gold doesn't prevent bubbles. Only regulation prevents bubbles. Gold DOES discourage infinite creation of fake value. Those populists couldn't have imagined monstrosities like QE and MMT, but they should have remembered Madman Lincoln's inflation, and the inflation in the first decades after 1776.

Well, now we have an 'available document' that makes it clear.
There are only two pronounced candidates, but it does not necessarily follow that one of them must be successful. The two active competitors for the Presidency on the Democratic side are Chief Justice Alton B. Parker, of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, and Mr. W. R. Hearst , a member of Congress from one of the districts of the city of New York, and the proprietor of the New York Journal and other newspapers.

Justice Parker is highly regarded by members of the bar, but he is unknown to the general public, who are consequently indifferent about his nomination. He has been brought forward as a candidate by the Conservatives — the men who detest Mr. Roosevelt as bitterly as they detest Mr. Bryan. Both Roosevelt and Bryan are Radicals, although they reach their Radicalism by different routes and do not meet at a common centre; and both are the terror of certain men of property, who profess to fear that Mr. Roosevelt will plunge the country into war, and that Mr. Bryan will plunge it into anarchy.

Mr. Bryan is out of the running, but his mantle has fallen on Mr. Hearst, who is the son of a multi-millionaire and owes his present prominence solely to his father's millions. He has spent an enormous sum in buying up delegates and creating sentiment in his favour. In all things, he is as extreme and fanatical as Mr. Bryan, and as Mr. Bryan realises that his nomination is impossible, he is giving Mr. Hearst his ardent support.
Bryan threw his ardent support to Hearst, the ultimate NYC plutocrat neocon warmonger.

NOW I SEE.

Bryan and Trump were Pied Pipers who picked up dissidents, took them on an enjoyable ride, then tossed them out and drove away, leaving the dissidents in a state of stunned confusion.

What did Bryan get for his trickery? He ended up as Sec of State for Madman Wilson, and helped to set up Versailles and the League of Nations. Neocon imperialism at its worst, the perfect absolute diametric opposite of populism.

The Dems nominated Alton Parker after all, because they knew TR was scheduled to "win". Parties don't waste useful candidates like Hearst in guaranteed-loss "elections".

  Regenerative Karens

Some Brits are surprised at the ferocity of Karenism in the current holocaust. They shouldn't be surprised. The British government has cultivated Karens for a long time. US Deepstate has picked up the habit, but it's still nowhere near as strong or well established. YET.

A 1924 article in Wireless Weekly shows the consistency of the long Karen pattern.

Headline: The BBC as Secret Police

Background: Regenerative receivers worked by creating an internal oscillation that served to demodulate the signal. Early regens had the annoying habit of transmitting their internal oscillation back through the antenna, which was a serious problem for neighboring receivers. Superhets, which were brand new in 1924 and not commercially popular yet, use an internal oscillator in a more orderly and 'quiet' way.

Many of our readers will have been astonished to note in the issue of Radio Times of March 21 a column headed " The Oscillation Nuisance - An Official Effort to Assist Listeners." The Officials of the British Broadcasting Company, in this "Important Notice," ask for information to be sent to them on a particular Form, which should state : Your name; Your address; Nature of complaint (duration, intensity, whether constant or intermittent); Name and address of offender (if known). The note which appears under this Form indicates that the information will be treated confidentially, and with regard to the third item, it is pointed out that it is useless to make wild guesses.

History in past centuries, and even in this century, has indicated that the encouragement of giving information to those in authority, whether this authority has been the Inquisition or the Secret Police under the Czarist regime, has led to the worst form of despotism and misery. When an important body like the British Broadcasting Company practically invites listeners to send them the names and addresses of people they think are oscillating, things have come to a pretty pass. Although the offence of oscillating is not a serious one in comparison with certain crimes, yet the principle is not altered, and the people of this country resent any interference with their liberty and peace.

If the BBC continues this invitation, no one will be safe from the secret postcard to the BBC which "will be treated confidentially," and which, in most cases, will be an outrageous, and sometimes spiteful, libel. Jones will not be able to meet Smith without wondering whether he has turned informer.
For comparison, America in 1924 was bootleggers and speakeasies. Snitches got stitched up by a Thompson gun.

We're getting far more Karenish in the current holocaust, but Karens who try to dominate a Facebook conversation still get blasted down effectively. We haven't reached parity with British Karens. YET.

= = = = =

Sidenote: I compared Prohibition to lockdowns back in May, but at that time the strictly partisan craziness wasn't fully formed. Now that it's formed, the comparison is worth trying again.

Prohibition was passed by midwestern Christians and Populists. NYC and media immediately rebelled, and most of the country had a healthy disdain for the rules.

Lockdowns were started by Trump, an NYC Deepstater who is falsely and maliciously mislabeled as a Populist. Even though he started and encouraged the holocaust, NYC and media are rebelling for MORE lockdowns and masks and riots. Pluponents, not opponents. There are NO OPPONENTS anywhere in the power structure. Normal people still have a healthy disdain for the genocide, but we have no support from any written or media source, no support from any politician or expert or entertainment.

The partisan divide is fully insane. Biden promises to MAINTAIN and INCREASE the lockdowns and masks and riots that Trump started. Trump has made no attempt to slow down the holocaust, but the idiot R partisans want to re-elect him so he can stop what he obviously enjoys. Both "sides" are incomprehensibly bonkers.

  We won't allow

Still thinking about the hail cannons and cloud seeders and self-defense.

I made the weather connection in Polistra's 2008 time-travel story. After popping up in 1939 to escape the awfulness of 2008 (little did she know that things would continue getting unimaginably more awful!) she encounters Fran, her 1939 alter ego. Part of the discussion:

= = = = =

Fran: Well, what great advances has America made since '39? Cured cancer?

Pol: No. We have lots of fancy machines and drugs, but except for childhood leukemia, which we can definitely cure, we haven't improved the survival rate in general. You could even say that the fancy machines make things worse, because people know about the cancer earlier.

Fran: That's dismal. Well, cured infantile paralysis?

Pol: Yes, in 1954.

Fran: Cured the common cold?

Pol: No.

Fran: Have you controlled weather? Built domed cities?

Pol: No. In fact we have decided to make no progress in that area. We haven't gone beyond cloud-seeding, and even though we know it works, we won't allow ourselves to do it.

= = = = =

As mentioned before, the common cold question would have halted the story if I'd tried to write this piece now. Instead of curing the common cold, which didn't need curing anyway, we decided to imprison and gag and kill everyone to halt the spread of the common cold. We decided to treat ordinary people VASTLY WORSE than we treat prisoners convicted of crimes. I've been there and I know.

= = = = =

Focusing on the weather point:

We won't allow ourselves to do it is the key. At that time I didn't know about hail cannons, which would have strengthened the point, especially in hail-prone Oklahoma.** Both technologies WORK to prevent damage. They're not complete or always reliable, so you don't want to use them loosely. When properly targeted and considered, both techs can save billions of dollars.

The same applies to ALL forms of self-defense.

The 2nd amendment dudes are always chanting nonsense about an armed population preventing tyranny. This was always nonsense. There's no correlation. Many unarmed countries have decent rulers, and many well-armed countries have dictators. As of this year, the chant ought to be perfectly unchantable. Half of America is armed, but the demonic governors and mayors went right ahead and killed everyone. No deterrence. Only the BLM rioters have tried to attack mayors, and they were doing it because the mayors were INSUFFICIENTLY DEMONIC for their tastes, not because the mayors are TOO DEMONIC for the survival of civilization. Pluponents, not opponents.

In all areas from weather to computers to health to government, we HAVE the weapons but we refuse to use them. The most egregious part of this refusal applies to the INTRINSIC weapons in our own bodies and minds. TV and social media have neutralized our mental immunity with Room 101, and the Public Death Officers have neutralized our physical immunity with panic and lockdowns and murder masks. As I noted yesterday, the same Public Death Officers are using lockdowns against pollution, instead of allowing us to make our own judgments and adapt our own bodies.

= = = = =

** In fact the hail cannons, if I had known about them, would be the only valid argument in Okla. I wrote about cloud seeding because it was relevant to the Dust Bowl, but seeding requires clouds. A region is afflicted by drought because the clouds are simply going elsewhere, not because the clouds are reluctant to release rain. Hail cannons were known to work in 1902, before Okla was a state; and Okla always has more hail than the rest of the country.

Misses one point, gets the other

An overlong article in Spiked reviews Thomas Frank's latest book on real Populism. It sounds like Frank mostly gets it, but misses one key point. Unlike other "leftist" authors, Frank realizes that Trump is a faker, but he makes the wrong comparison.

I've been studying and writing about real Populism for 12 years, and I know a few things. One of the things I know is that Jennings Bryan was a faker in the same way as Trump.

= = = = = START REPRINT:

Some articles are comparing 1919 with 2019 in terms of globalism vs populism. It's a weak comparison.

One important point is missing: The populists of 1890-1920 were fakers. Jennings Bryan and his equivalents in the prairies diagnosed the problems of finance-centered capitalism correctly, but offered a prescription that would INCREASE the power of banks. They promised easier borrowing and looser money. They were pluponents, not opponents.

The tools and measurements are different today. Bimetallism no longer makes sense because we abandoned ALL metals in 1971. ZIRP and QE were unthinkable in 1920. But the direction is the same.

Real populists today are NOT fakers. The non-Soros side of the world is getting out of debt and returning to the gold standard.

Among the populists in Sorosia, there's one subtle difference that I didn't notice when I was discussing this a couple years ago.

Jennings Bryan's campaign diagnosed the problems correctly and prescribed wrong. Voters who truly understood the situation had enough info to make a proper decision.

Trump's campaign rhetoric diagnosed the problems correctly AND prescribed correctly. His campaign advocated tighter money, higher interest, and less emphasis on the Dow.

He switched to pluponent AFTER he took office. His real base in NYC knew all along that he would serve them, because he's been serving them for 40 years. They kept quiet for strategic reasons.

= = = = = END REPRINT.

Frank gets FDR right. FDR was the only TRUE Populist. Instead of shutting down the productive economy and bailing out the banks, he shut down the banks and bailed out the productive economy.

= = = = =

Sept 23 update: In a later discussion at Spiked, Frank deals with McCarthyISM, recognizing correctly that the ISM was just another way for the aristocrats to call populists crazy. He recognizes that the same thing is happening with TrumpISM. But again he misses the deeper connection by treating both McCarthy and Trump as spontaneous expressions of populism. In fact both are tools created and operated BY the aristocrats, and more specifically both were created and operated by the exact SAME aristocrat. Roy Cohn. This is an openly known fact in both cases, not a secret. Roy Cohn became McCarthy's "boyfriend" and used sex and blackmail to push him into drunken excesses that served Deepstate's ends. We don't know how Cohn created Trump; it appears that Trump was more of an active participant and star student, not a drunk rape victim. Nevertheless, both are the same machine operated by the same people for the same purpose.

Why does Frank miss these connections when he sees everything else with crystal clarity? Maybe it's just personality and life experience. Frank seems to be a likable optimistic extrovert who didn't spend his youth fending off bullies and beatings. He hasn't been in prison, wasn't forced to learn about intractably evil people, and didn't acquire mental immunity.

In this second piece Frank makes one HUGE point that is UNQUESTIONABLY CRUCIAL AND VALID. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER LISTEN TO AN EXPERT. ALL EXPERTS ARE TYRANTS WHO SERVE SATAN.

  Pluponents again

Random thought, not new or original....

The key point in understanding Deepstate's "election" games is that there's no difference between the puppets inside the system.

What matters is not which puppet takes the controls, but who gets INTO the system.

I understood this key point a long time ago in the context of academia and tenure. "Free speech" and "open debate" are meaningless. Discussions do occur, and are rarely censored, BECAUSE the discussers have already been pre-selected for orthodoxy. Think of the range of opinions as an axis with X running from 1 to -1. The myth tells us that discussion involves opposing interplay of 1 versus -1, but in fact the discussion ranges from 1.00 to 1.01, with the end of the axis always pushing outward toward more evil. See Pluponents.

I was slower to pick up the phenomenon in politics because I have no experience or training in politics. Whether I understood it or not, it's always been the same. You can't get anywhere near the levers of power unless you've been preselected and preconditioned in multiple levels and layers.

Innate personality of the leader matters vastly more than ideology or party. Real change happens when a pre-qualified leader effectively changes his personality. He encounters a NOW I SEE moment or epiphany after he's solidly in power, and decides to move in a different direction.

From an extremely different era 8

Spiked UK continues carrying the torch, comparing today's totally synchronized world tyranny with the '30s. I've made the same comparison often. In the '30s, and even during WW2 with strict official censorship, a much wider range of opinions was available on major media, and varying opinions were treated objectively.

The FCC's Fairness Doctrine made diversity MANDATORY in radio. A station that carried editorial material for one side had to carry the other side as well.

Here's an example that recently appeared on American Radio History. A 1933 brochure from WHB in KC, touting both jazz and Father Coughlin, without tinfoiling either one. Coughlin lost his popularity later because FDR was ACTUALLY IMPROVING THINGS, not because he was censored. No politician in US or UK can possibly be guilty of IMPROVING THINGS now. All politicians eagerly bid up the holocaust killcount in "Debates" that are really auctions. And FDR was ACTUALLY IMPROVING THINGS because counterforces were allowed to exist, and allowed to run candidates. Negative feedback is necessary for life. Positive feedback is death.

Newspapers didn't have a Fairness Doctrine, but they had real competition in most places. Every town with more than 400 people had one paper, and towns above 2000 had two papers. Each paper was openly and proudly labeled with its partisan preference, so you knew what you were buying. Consistent brands, no Gotchas. After 1960 all papers converged to Deepstate.

Another salute to the Sucker Filter.

I've said this before and I'll say it again.

The SUCKER FILTER is the most important clarifier in all of history. Nothing else comes close.

I never figured it out on my own. I wish to hell I'd read about it much earlier. It didn't enter public discussion until 2012.

Back in '69, I was already noticing the perfect openness of Deepstate's stings and agent provocateurs. Drug salesmen were openly known as Fed narks, yet they continued selling and narking. Activist groups were infiltrated by agents who openly identified themselves as "former CIA".

I didn't understand why they were so obvious. I just assumed they weren't very good at their jobs. Surely they didn't realize that we knew about them? If they realized, they'd be more secret? No, they were doing their jobs perfectly, and I was a perfect sucker.

The sucker filter is simply more efficient than secrets.

When evil is concealed, the group pulls in loyal suckers PLUS people who will soon realize what's happening. Result: internal dissension, disgruntled whistleblowers, lawsuits.

When evil is open, the best servants of evil join forces and work hard. There are no counterforces within either of the "opposing" "teams". No internal friction, no error correction, no negative feedback. Each "team" consists solely of loyal enthusiastic mindless warriorbots, working diligently to kill the non-participants.

  The people understand

Some excellent comments in this Spokane-News post about a suicide. Shows that many people understand the genocidal PURPOSE of the shutdowns.

Of course it doesn't matter how many people understand it. We don't have Epstein on our side, so we have less than zero power.

Less than zero? Yes, it's a positive feedback loop, a vicious circle. Our actions and beliefs cause the monsters to do MORE evil.

= = = = =

This leads back to my Don't Be There theme. My initial STRONG immune response to this tyranny was outright rebellion, but I had to squash it. Open rebellion always leads to vastly worse tyranny. See Gouvernour Morris's thoughts about revolutions.

Don't Be There was triggered by the conservatives on campus who were getting in fights with the Antifa and #resistance types. This is EXACTLY what Deepstate wants. Deepstate wants a visible display of disobedience so it can "justify" ever more crackdowns.

Rock and hard place, Scylla and Charybdis. Rock = creating a visible disturbance. Hard place = violating my GOD-ASSIGNED duty to truth and science. In the Don't Be There stuff I concluded that the best course is avoiding visible aggravation while quietly speaking the truth.

If you want to "change the world", there's absolutely no ACTIVE way to do it. The best you can do is AVOID strengthening Deepstate. All you can do is STAY THE FUCK AWAY from these atrocious fake puppet shows. Don't invite "controversial" speakers, don't join protests, don't join movements. Speak the truth when possible, do your duty.

At the moment this is still possible here. It's not possible in Britain where Deepstate cracks down equally hard on speech and imputed beliefs. I'm sure our Deepstate will get there soon, but it's not there YET.

New refinement of an old thought

Old thought, repeated often:

Deepstate's divide and conquer works so well because it destroys the basis of our senses.

We're built to sense fine time-deltas while factoring out slowly changing ambient conditions. At the coarse level we have two ears, two eyes, two nostrils, two hands, and so on. At the fine level each sense within the two sides constantly keeps a moving average of recent conditions, and reads the difference between current conditions and recent average.

We make decisions based on the movement of a focused and chosen variable because we factor out all AMBIENT variables.

Deepstate and Github cause the AMBIENT to be divided into sides and constantly moving. We can't focus on our chosen variable because EVERYTHING is constantly triggering our time diffs and our space diffs and our moral diffs.

New thought:

We also have innately designed diffs in our social structures. Males and females look at the world differently. Extroverts and introverts, swarmers and sitters, gamblers and savers, look at the world differently. When all of these ranges are connected up properly, both ends of each spectrum exert mutual negative feedback to keep the culture centered, just as the two vestibular systems and two eyes work in opposition to keep our posture centered. Society functions like a living thing, factoring out ambient conditions and focusing on relevant changes.

Deepstate explicitly and openly eradicates these social deltas. Females MUST think like males. Everyone MUST think like extroverts and swarmers and debtors and gamblers. In each case the side that favors instability and rapid change is preferred. The stable and storing and remembering side is NEGATIVE EXTERNALITY EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE.

  Subtle difference

Some articles are comparing 1919 with 2019 in terms of globalism vs populism. It's a weak comparison.

  More objective history

Still speaking of a strictly objective approach to history... KSHS has added a big pile of letters related to Charles Curtis.

Curtis was a Topeka politician of native origin, who ended up as Herbert Hoover's VP. He could have been the first and only truly natural-born president if Hoover had ever offended Deepstate enough to get accidented or suicided.

Many of the letters are from Howel Jones, who was Curtis's political godfather at the start of his career in 1895. Jones encouraged Curtis to serve the native people, and also encouraged him to serve the Santa Fe. Curtis did a good job of both.

Modern observers would have a cognitive dissonance attack. On the one hand he was Die-Verse "before his time", and on the other hand he was a Corrupt Corporate Toady.

No CD, no conflict. Curtis was simply a normal non-heroic politician representing his OWN constituents.

He wasn't "before his time". Representing the tribes wasn't unthinkable in the 1920s, wasn't forbidden by pre-modern Nazi Neanderthals. Most of his legislation was passed into law.

Why was his legislation passed? The Santa Fe was based and owned in Topeka, not in NYC. Legislation that helped the Santa Fe brought in more tax money and more jobs for Topeka. Quid pro quo, as we say now.

In modern times quid pro quo is explicitly defined as treason. In modern times normal political trading is obsolete because the tribes now own the casinos that own the states. Everything is a mob now, everything is a monopoly now, nothing requires negotiation or balance between competing forces.

= = = = =

Later thought: Madman Lincoln was also owned and godfathered by the railroads. His career was also a quid pro quo. Lincoln burned down half the country and killed 1/5 of the people. Curtis improved conditions for the tribes. Same quo, different quids.

  Cavalier isn't the worst problem

Via ZH, Mish Shedlock has found some earlier writing by Kupperman, the full Tribal who replaced insufficiently Tribal Bolton as Nat Sec Advisor.

In true autistic Tribal form:
Nuclear war is a destructive thing but still in large part a physics problem.

If the objective in a war is to try to destroy as many Soviet civilians and as many American civilians as is feasible, and the casualty levels approached 150 million on each side, then it’s going to be tough to say you have a surviving nation after that. But depending on how the nuclear war is fought, it could mean the difference between 150 million casualties and 20 million casualties. I think that is a significant difference, and if the country loses 20 million people, you may have a chance of surviving after that.

I think it is possible to win, in the classical sense. It means that it is clear after the war that one side is stronger than the other side, the weaker side is going to accede to the demands of the stronger side.
Shedlock calls this a cavalier attitude, which is an understatement. The real problem is that Kupperman's FACTUAL assumptions were FALSE in the '80s and even more drastically FALSE now.

As I wrote earlier:

= = = = = START REPRINT:

Supposedly the 'duck and cover' drills and the fallout shelters of 1960 were generators of panic. Nope, it's the exact opposite, by intention and result. Eisenhower and JFK wanted Americans to feel confident. That's why they built public shelters and encouraged the building of private shelters.

Basic fact about anxiety: When you do something that gives you a convincing sense of control, you lose the panic.

When you have your own tornado/fallout shelter, or you know there's a public tornado/fallout shelter nearby, you don't panic nearly as much about the mysterious tornado/fallout.

Later presidents, beginning with Unhanged Traitor Carter, intentionally substituted panic for confidence, and concentrated solely on protecting their own personal dictatorial ass. The fallout shelter system, and the Civil Defense warning system, were allowed to lapse and gradually deleted from the bureaucracy.

In 2001 when the dreaded event finally happened, no part of the government responded and no emergency warnings were broadcast. The Professional Panicators at the cable TV networks grabbed the fearball and ran with it, with considerable help from Sultan Bush's bureaucrats.

Mission accomplished: Total vulnerability. Civil Defense was replaced by Cognitive Dissonance. We realized the government was absolutely useless (or worse) and we simultaneously had to obey the government's "protective measures" like TSA.
China and Russia never abandoned Civil Defense. They continued to serve their own people with vast and well-maintained bunkers.

See this 1971 Civil Defense document in PDF form. It's a formerly classified study of shelter and evacuation options, and it explicitly cites Soviet shelters and plans as a 'gold standard'. So we knew good and goddamn well that we were providing less protection than the USSR.

= = = = = END REPRINT.

There is also a CULTURAL assumption that the autistic Tribals miss, or more likely know and lie about. Russia is a nation and an ethnic group and a church, all in one. The Soviets tried to break the church but failed, and didn't try very hard after 1941. Russians are unconditionally Russian, and educated and trained for real life. See Orlov.

Putin has been working to rebuild and strengthen the unity of nation and culture and church, which never fully disappeared. Our government has been smashing and obliterating and pulverizing our culture and religion since 1946.

Footnote: Checking the hrefs, I see the 1971 Civil Defense document is no longer openly available. It's behind a DHS dictatorial-ass-protecting wall. This is typical. When I wrote the above in 2011, the web had reached a peak of information openness. Since then, useful info has been disappearing fast.

  Trustworthy source

There's a lot of noise about the alleged departure of Bolton and its alleged significance. I ignore noise from DC and the NYC media demons.

When info comes from a trustworthy source, I listen. AMLO mentions that he had a "good phone conversation" with Trump, who "reaffirmed the desire to maintain a relation of friendship and cooperation" between USA and Mexico.

Maybe something has actually changed? Probably not.

Update 20 hours later: Not.

In fact, my views on Venezuela, and especially Cuba, were far stronger than those of John Bolton. He was holding me back!

  Superfiat

I've pointed out before that ... the Populists of the 1890s were good diagnosers but terrible prescribers. They analyzed the problems of financialism and globalism beautifully, but their proposed solution was always a weakening of the gold standard. Exactly backwards. What happened when Nixon finally killed the gold standard? Final victory for the bankers and globalists. For some reason the usual Populist Pill was Bimetallism, which mixed 15 parts silver and 1 part gold into a magic token that would destroy all bankers.

Modern bad prescribers don't have that excuse. They are living inside an era of infinite QE and MMT. We can see clearly that true nationalists like Russia and Persia are moving back to gold and savings as fast as they can, while globalists are spinning out of orbit toward infinite debt and total abstraction.

Nevertheless, the "independents" continue to prescribe Bitcoin, the modern magic token that will destroy all bankers by giving total control to Deepstate.

Via ZH, a perfect parallel. The author claims that nationalism and Bitcoin go together, just as nationalism and bimetallism supposedly went together. The author sets up two alternatives: Central bank fiat vs Bitcoin. He doesn't even mention the other end of the scale. Bitcoin is super-fiat, not anti-fiat. Gold is anti-fiat.

  Blockoleth

Listening to an interview with McAfee. He says a lot of uniquely realistic things about life. He talks all the time about privacy and freedom, but he sells Bitcoin.

Exact opposites. Bitcoin places you directly inside NSA.

Is he too dumb to realize it? Well, he's supposedly the original programmer of his eponymous antivirus system. Serious programmers recognize the fraudulent nature of blockchain, and a programmer who worked specifically with viruses should recognize it even more sharply.

Either he's faking the programming experience, or he's a false prophet.

This particular type of falseness is not new, as I noted before. The populists of 1880 to 1910, led by Jennings Bryan, were false prophets. They diagnosed the problem correctly, but recommended moving toward a Nixonian floating currency and toward increasing debt. They claimed to hate the banks but served the banks.

A real populist starts first by BREAKING the power of banks, not increasing it. Deepstate has three legs: Banks, Intel plus data, and Leftist activists. These legs were built in the 1890s and continue to the present. The banks are the foundation. Intel and activists are auxiliaries.

FDR started by breaking the banks. He's our only true populist.

= = = = =

Later and better thought: There's a third possibility. McAfee simply doesn't give a fuck about consistency. He's a REALIST. He knows that nobody uses logic, nobody listens, nobody analyzes. Discussion and persuasion are perfectly futile, though they may be fun for the participants. Bitcoin is a way to make money, so he uses it.

  One exception

Earlier Professor Polistra analyzed the relation between fashionable beliefs and fashionable people.

A similar pattern works for experts vs non-experts. Prof P finds that non-experts, people who know about a subject but are NOT PAID to write about it, have a wide range of accuracy. Non-paid experts are rarely all wrong, mostly close to right, often exactly right.

Paid experts are paid to express fashionable beliefs, so their accuracy is a lot like fashionable people except worse.

The least wicked of paid experts are exactly wrong about everything, with an occasional and accidental right word caused by a typo or editing error. The majority are WORSE THAN WRONG, multi-layeredly and convolutedly and lethally and brain-dissolvingly wrong. There's no way to compare their statements with truth. If you try, you'll lose your mind.

There is precisely one exception to the rule. Ann Widdecombe is a paid expert in the realms of politics and "social" "science". She was the Minister of Prisons for the British government, and now she's a MEP. She is EXACTLY RIGHT about everything I can check and verify.

  Elon = Osama

A few months ago I tried to concoct some new non-standard conspiracy theories, since all the standard ones have turned out to be true.

Here's another.

Conventional wisdom says that Elon may be a poor manager, but his "inspiration" made the electric vehicle cool.

Simply false. His crappy quality ruined the reputation of EVs. Elon pulled EVs out of the NATURAL NICHE WHERE THEY ARE BETTER THAN GAS CARS, and placed them in a niche where they will never compete. Standard AP procedure. Real car manufacturers had to slow down their plans until Elon was out of the way.

Therefore: Elon is working FOR big oil, not AGAINST big oil. He is a classic Agent Provocateur to get all the idiots involved in a cult for EVs. He makes EVs look awful, just as al-Qaeda makes Muslims look awful and Trump makes populists look awful and Betty Friedan made women look awful and Ayn Rand made capitalism look awful. The best part of his AP assignment is the autonomous nonsense, which actually kills people in the name of EVs.

This would also explain why Elon gets away with brazenly breaking all the rules. Other tech monsters break rules, but they do it quietly in a way that doesn't embarrass the SEC and FTC. Elon openly spits in the face of the regulators and nothing happens. When you're part of Deepstate, rules don't exist.

Extended and expanded the "theory".

  It's all blockades now 1

Via BBC, USA STRONG is preparing to levy a somewhat meaningful fine of 5 billion against Facebook.

Are we punishing FB for improper use of common carrier laws while censoring content? No.

Are we punishing FB for using everyone's offline data to snitch on dissidents? No.

Are we punishing FB for antitrust violations? No.

We are punishing FB for INCOMPLETE censorship, for FAILING to snitch on dissidents. They committed the crime of selling some data to Cambridge Analytica, in the same way that they sold data to many other organizations. Cambridge Analytica may have used the data to disparage Hillary, which is a Federal crime.

In other words, Facebook violated the official BLOCKADE against Deplorables. We are punishing FB in the same way that we punish French companies for doing business with Persia, or punish Germany for buying natural gas from Russia.
