Judging by the experience of other familiar bloggers, Wordpress seems to have a better record of openness. It's also a paid subscription, which establishes a two-way obligation. Customer, not product. So I've started a new blog at Wordpress, as Polistrasmill.com. It starts with a repetition of this item.
Fortunately I made a firm habit of storing all archived content offline, so I can eventually restore the lost items to the new blog. No point in copying all of this content. I can still link to it when needed.
Okay, inquisitor, burn as much as you want. You can't touch my truth, you can only strengthen my resolve.
I'm sure as fuck not going to fall for the 'appeals' routine. That's a trap. I'll never revise the truth to satisfy an inquisitor. When I determine FROM MY OWN OBSERVATION AND EXPERIENCE that I've been wrong, I do retract and revise.

These instructions are hugely complex and detailed, but everything is in normal English, so you can read it unambiguously.
When mathematicians wrote manuals, they continued their blackboard habits of mixing Greek and Hebrew and Roman and Fraktur and made-up symbols, scrawled loosely and sloppily.
From a MANIAC III manual written at Univ of Chicago in 1962:
Can you tell the difference between the alpha and gamma? And what is that symbol for Tag? Is that a tau or a iota with an acute accent over it?
Note the beta superscripted by a capital R which is subscripted by 11, or is it [1 sub 1] or [1 in the first category and 1 in the second category]? No, it's not any of those things. It's the fucking RIGHT QUOTATION MARK for the sentence.
More to the point, they had just defined specific WORDS for their concepts. Operation, tag, information, left designator, right inflector. THEY DIDN'T NEED THE GREEK. The entire discussion would have been clearer using the ACTUAL FUCKING WORDS.
Do an Operation, in a manner specified by the left and right Inflectors, on information designated by left Designators and modified by left Modifiers; and on information designated by right Designators and modified by right Modifiers.
Even when they accidentally used only Roman letters, the blackboard habit of supersubsuperscripting continued.
The limited character set on keypunch keyboards FORCED programmers to talk English.
No Greek, no math symbols, no subs and supers. Just uppercase Roman, numbers, and a few bookkeeping symbols like dollars and percent. COBOL was written on and for keypunches, and it originally had no symbols at all.
DIVIDE NUMA BY NUMB GIVING RES-DIV.
Naming variables in English was the biggest contribution of programming.
Later keyboards and languages made longer names possible, and introduced more symbols, but never dropped to the level of mathematicians.
Those academics at Chicago had been using computers and keypunches for several years, and still hadn't learned English. Modern mathematicians still insist on a tangled jumble of Greek, Hebrew, supersubsupersubscripts, and an occasional SINGLE letter of English. Never never never allow a word to contaminate the purity of obfuscation.Labels: Real World Math, storage

The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) has long been a convenient file exchange mechanism between computers on a network. While this standard protocol has been supported in all major browsers almost since its inception, it’s by now one of the oldest protocols still in use and suffers from a number of serious security issues. The FTP protocol itself has been disabled by default since version 88 and now the time has come to end an era and discontinue the support for this outdated and insecure protocol — Firefox 90 will no longer support the FTP protocol. If you are a Firefox user, you don’t have to do anything to benefit from this security advancement. As soon as your Firefox auto-updates to version 90, any attempt to launch an attack relying on the insecure FTP protocol will be rendered useless, because Firefox does not support FTP anymore. If you aren’t a Firefox user yet, you can download the latest version here to start benefiting from all the ways that Firefox works to protect you when browsing the web.Public Health. Nurse Ratched all the way. You don't need to do anything to BENEFIT from losing half of your data forever. As soon as we GITHUB-LOBOTOMIZE** you forcibly and automatically, you will lose half of your data and you will BENEFIT. Jesus. This is an integral part of the RENTALIZATION of the world. You're not allowed to have your own house or your own computer or your own software or your own books or your own data or your own skills or your own mind. Everything must be rented from Lord Bezos, ON CONDITION OF OBEDIENCE AND ORTHODOXY. And best of all, you will BENEFIT from letting us control your mind and property entirely. You'll never have to worry about being ATTACKED by your own data. You'll never worry about the threats we create, like "hacking" and "terrorism" and "misinformation" and "viruses". You will love Big Sibling Of Indeterminate Gender. The rulers, of course, don't need security. They don't need muzzles and distancing and lucite and SSL and anti-FTP nurses. They can live normally and breathe normally and use IBM tape drives for storage because they're IN CHARGE OF THE HOAX. Fortunately there are still some non-Ratched humans in the world. After trying FileZilla, which refuses to do its own fucking job because of "security", I found WinSCP, made in Czechia, which performs perfectly without any quibbles about TLS or other shit. Even better, the UI is rigged in Norton Commander style for easy keyboard use. WinSCP flawlessly transferred six years of MY work to MY computer where I can OWN it and amortize it and gain inspiration from it. = = = = = ** Protecting you from your own data IS a lobotomy. That's exactly what it does.

It is unknown to me how many believe that worldly events are so governed by fortune and by God, that men cannot by their prudence change them, and that on the contrary there is no remedy whatever, and for this they may judge it to be useless to toil much about them, but let things be ruled by chance. This opinion has been more believed in our day, from the great changes that have been seen, and are daily seen, beyond every human conjecture. [SOUNDS FUCKING FAMILIAR, DOESN'T IT?] When I think about them at times, I am partly inclined to share this opinion. Nevertheless, that our freewill may not be altogether extinguished, I think it may be true that fortune is the ruler of half our actions, but that she allows the other half or a little less to be governed by us. I would compare her to an impetuous river that, when turbulent, inundates the plains, ruins trees and buildings, removes earth from this side and places it on the other; every one flies before it, and everything yields to its fury without being able to oppose it. And yet when it is quiet, men can make provision against it by dams and banks, so that when it rises it will either go into a canal or its rush will not be so wild and dangerous. It happens similarly with fortune, which shows her power where no measures have been taken to resist her, and turns her fury where she knows that no dams or barriers have been made to hold her. But limiting myself more to particular cases, I would point out how one sees a certain prince today fortunate and tomorrow ruined, without seeing that he has changed in character. I believe this arises in the first place from the causes that we have already discussed at length; that is to say, because the prince who bases himself entirely on fortune is ruined when fortune varies. I also believe that he is happy whose mode of proceeding accords with the needs of the times, and similarly he is unfortunate whose mode of proceeding is opposed to the times. For one sees that in those things which lead them to the aim that each one has in view, namely, glory and riches, men proceed in various ways; one with circumspection, another with impetuosity, one by violence, another by cunning, one with patience, another with the reverse; and each by these diverse ways may arrive at his aim. One sees also two cautious men, one of whom succeeds in his designs, and the other not, and in the same way two men succeed equally by different methods, one being cautious, the other impetuous, which arises only from the nature of the times, which does or does not conform to their method of proceeding.HARDASS and perfectly accurate. Expressed in my peculiar language: When you've built enough dams and stored enough material and human capital, you're free to act more impetuously. When you tear down dams and grain elevators, when you operate on debt and JIT, the floods of fortune will always be in control, and you won't be free to improvise or think or create. Thinking of balances and bridges, it would be interesting to see a counterpoise book written as advice for peasants. Separate out the same variables and graph the same transfer functions for the opposite side of the balance. When the prince is generous with the peasants, how should the peasants behave to maximize the generosity and encourage the prince? When the prince is murderous, how should the peasants minimize the damage and discourage the prince? Machiavelli sometimes describes how the peasants typically respond to the ruler's behavior, but he's not on our side.

I've made this point before. Storage is the heart of civilization.
When you have a steady supply of power and material and labor, you can start building a SURPLUS of value. A good season can be stored to get you through a bad season. Grain elevators, oil storage tanks, dams, savings accounts.
In basic economic terms, civilization happens when you have a reliable SURPLUS of value. The SURPLUS can be used to build new farms and factories, and to build better and more beautiful cities and parks and schools. Without the SURPLUS, civilization collapses.
When you're constantly behind the curve, living hand to mouth or deep in debt, every slight perturbation kills you.
Western debtism guarantees that the whole system is constantly on the negative side of the ledger, constantly relying on bankers to supply loans or the central bank to print money. Just-in-time inventory, wind and solar "power", zero interest on savings, arbitrage instead of grain storage. Civilization is impossible, and independent decisions are impossible. NYC controls everything.
Sharia and Soviet systems are firmly planted on the SURPLUS side, with government taking part of the surplus to fund its operations. Monopolizing the surplus is prohibited. In Sharia the prohibition is cultural and legal; in Soviet the stock traders simply don't exist so they can't slaughter the world.

The problem wasn’t lack of demand, but lack of supply. At the end of April, Ford announced that it would likely cut global production in Q2 by half. The entire first half was marred by production cuts at various plants. On June 30, Ford announced further production cuts for July and August. The culprit is the same every time: semiconductor shortages and parts shortages. Toyota, paragon of just-in-time inventory, blew everyone away by having stockpiled chips. Following the Fukushima disaster in 2011, which massively tangled up its just-in-time supply chain, Toyota demanded from its suppliers that they stockpile two to six months of semiconductors of all kinds for Toyota. We "learned" from Toyota's JIT crap and turned JIT into an axiom. Any company that wanted to RAISE SHARE VALUE had to eliminate every aspect of normal business. No storage, no savings, no learning, no experience, no factories, no production, no profit, no employees. Just raw abstract math and infinite debt. Will we learn from the lockdowns? No. EXPERIENCE SURVIVES. THEORY KILLS.

Real value varies linearly with heft, up to an asymptotic limit where the heft becomes impractical for its purpose. Tanh as always.
Asshole value is the reciprocal of real value. As real heft goes to zero, asshole value increases (as always) exponentially.

IETlabs continues to make and calibrate derivatives of GenRad products, and performs a tremendous service by maintaining old GenRad publications online. Maintaining old records of old technology is an even more important form of calibration in an era of Github memoryholing. Clearly they were using the original booklet from GenRad files, not one of the 20,000 printed copies that were ordered by the original form. Calibration at all levels! Thanks, IETlabs.
The book was aimed at industrial tech types who were suddenly required to deal with noise measurements by new OSHA regs in 1970. GenRad's simple sound level meter at that time (the 1565A) looked like this:
The artist took full advantage of the meter's face, turning it into a character.
Decibels don't add like apples and oranges.
Meters and humans don't work the same way. Human hearing is totally oriented toward filtering OUT stuff that doesn't matter, and bringing IN new information in the strict sense. If a sound is meaningful and new, we focus on it, starting with the remarkable tip-link mechanism in the cochlea, and continuing all the way into the higher language centers.
The meter has no idea which sounds are meaningful. It just picks up waves of air pressure and filters them by frequency.
Here's how the GenRad book balances out the human and meter perceptions:
You have been told, correctly, that measurement is the first step in the solution of a noise problem, and you have made your measurements. The noise, meanwhile, continues, apparently unintimidated by your bulging data book. But your day is near; you have the facts you need to act intelligently. An effective noise-reduction program requires careful planning. The man who finds a noise level too high and immediately says, "We'll just slap some acoustical tile here and there; that ought to take care of it," will probably be disappointed at the results. Not that acoustical tile isn't a good way to reduce noise - it often is. But this approach is like shooting a person full of penicillin at the first sign of a cold.** The more prudent course is to analyze the noise (either roughly with the sound-level meter, as discussed on page 74, or in detail with a sound analyzer), decide from this analysis what to do about it, and check results by further analysis. This procedure ensures that you're reducing the noise at the frequencies you're most concerned with - usually, those frequencies that are about the same as speech frequencies. The meter can filter by freq, so you have to use those filters as a crude approximation of our PURPOSE filters. The A-weighting filter is closest to the spectrum of speech, so the A is the best setting to measure interference with meaningful communication. The B weighting tends to focus on the upper freq range that is likely to cause damage to the cochlea. C is broadest, covering the whole range of hearing while ignoring freqs that don't affect the ears at all. The handbook ends with a poem!
With so much sound-measuring equipment and counsel available, there is no longer any need to suffer the annoyance and hazards of excessive noise. Ry acquiring a sound-level meter, you will take the first step on that golden stairway to the promised land where ... Like beacons on a sea of silence Life's silver sounds invade the air: The wind plays tunes upon the trees, The stream sighs and from the mountain flees, The rain's beat, the phoebe's call - Ears were made for sounds like these. The author isn't credited, and I can't find the text online, so it might have been written at GenRad. Do any modern industries have poets on staff, or use poetry in their handbooks? Especially poetry that says ears were MADE? Not even worth asking. = = = = = These unannoyable meters need to be calibrated in an unemotional way. GenRad's own calibrator was electronic, designed to produce the usual audiometer frequencies in the glottal range. (125, 250, 500, 1k, 2k). Because it was electronic, it wasn't an absolute or definitional calibrator. It wasn't controlled by a crystal or tuning fork, so its output depended on the quality and aging of the transistors and speaker.
For absolute calibration, acoustics uses a pistonphone. The pistonphone is both absolute and definitional. It produces waves of air pressure with a permanent and unalterable amplitude, at a mostly consistent frequency.
Here Polistra is using a Bruel & Kjaer pistonphone to calibrate her 1565A.
The BK pistonphone produces an absolute 124 dB at standard barometric pressure, and comes with a barometer to calibrate the calibration more precisely.
Here's the pistonphone as seen from the business end. The black plastic part fits over the standard microphone, forming a closed chamber between the pistons and the mic.
Here's the innards. When I worked in an acoustics lab at Penn State, I opened up a pistonphone to replace the batteries and saw this mysterious setup. I ass-u-me-d that the big silver thing was the piston, which seemed logical. It must push and pull directly in and out toward the mic.
Logical but wrong. As I learned just now from the manual, the big silver thing is the 'engine block', and the little 'pins' in its sides are the actual pistons. The motor turns a cam, and the pistons ride in and out in a guaranteed sinusoid pattern with a guaranteed amplitude.
The frequency wasn't guaranteed, but BK had a clever bit of analog design to regulate it almost precisely. There was a centrifugal pusher on the same shaft with the cam, and it would break the circuit to the base of the transistor when the piston frequency went above 250 cps. This didn't turn off the motor because current still flowed around the transistor through R1; but the reduced current allowed the motor to slow down to 250 cps.
Just as the design of the human sensory system can't be reduced to software, this type of elegant analog feedback loop can't be reduced to software.

** Shoot everyone full of penicillin at the first sign of cold: Neanderthal primitive analogy. As we know now, the CORRECT SCIENTIFIC MEDICAL approach is to shoot everyone full of fear and panic and isolation and depression and starvation and darkness and unemployment and screeching hopeless desperation, and then strangle them to death, in order to PREVENT people who were already dying from catching colds in the middle of dying. This is SCIENCE. Back in those primitive Neanderthal times, the primitive Neanderthal knuckle-draggers called our modern progressive methods "human sacrifice" because they were completely uneducated and stupid.Labels: Equipoise, metametrology, Metrology, storage
The number of asylum seekers to the Netherlands dropped by nearly a half last year to about 30,000, in part due to an EU refugee deal with Turkey and the closure of the Balkan route used by migrants to reach Europe. The latest influx of migrants - mainly from the Middle East and Africa - accounts for only a small fraction of the non-Western population in the country. This suggests that the backlash against immigration is not only about new arrivals. This is a constant misunderstanding, even by good objective analysts. Common in discussions of regular crime, now appearing again in migrant crime. Analysts assume that people who are currently besieged by a problem must be the most strongly opposed to the problem. Life doesn't work that way. Who wants the harshest punishments for criminals? Who wants the biggest walls against migrants? Not people who have never been exposed to crime. If you've always lived in good neighborhoods or had private security services, you don't know what criminals are. Not people who live in permanently crime-ridden neighborhoods. They've given up. Harshites are people who ESCAPED from bad neighborhoods, and now see their blessed escape zone turning bad. People who used to be involved in crime and got out. Life is all about anticipation. Life is about the future. Everything we do and think and feel involves a HUGE helping of anticipation. We understand speech and writing, and we appreciate music, because we're forming templates several phrases ahead of the speaker. We walk and drive by anticipation of future steps and streets. We reproduce and work and plan and save because we are looking at the future for ourselves or our descendants. If you've never experienced X you can't anticipate X, so you can't spot the initial signs of X creeping into your life. If you've always been flooded with X, anticipation is pointless. You can't see a life without X. Comrade O'Brien and his followers, and the Innovative Disrupters of the tech-tyrant world, are killers. Anticipation depends on a PERMANENT or at least slowly-changing baseline. When the cultural baseline is constant, we have infinitely detailed templates for every aspect of life, enabling us to get along on sparse perception and minimal conscious thought. We have space and energy for more interesting thoughts or pursuits. When Soros and Bezos yank the ground from under us 100 times in every step, we have to devote ALL our energy and perception to basic survival. Permanent morality and slow-changing technology are like a savings account. Sorosian picosecond change is like hopeless debt. Needless to say, Soros hasn't missed this analogy; eliminating savings and burning cash are major parts of his omnicide project. = = = = = END REPRINT.

The Fed’s super-hyped, glorified, deified, and ballyhooed $750-billion buying-program of corporate bonds and bond ETFs, including junk bonds and junk-bond ETFs, had triggered one of the most magnificent credit-market rallies ever. And then the Fed hardly bought anything. Now the Fed is touting its success in jawboning the markets into a frenzy without having to do hardly any actual purchases. This is parallel to the fake "terrorists" and fake "emergencies" and fake "foreign attacks" and fake "viruses" created by other parts of the goverment. Write a story about a threat, tell the story loud and clear, generate mass panic and mass hysteria, then steer the energy of the hysteria to create a public "need" for more tyranny and a "need" for more bailouts to NYC. It's more than just parallel. All of these fake stories, economic and political, have the same RESULT in real terms AND economic terms. Millions of real people and real businesses and real schools and real skills are destroyed. A few psychopathic plutocrats gain trillions in new wealth and infinite new power. In the realm of war, the trick is as old as organized governments. Fake "attacks" or fake "insults" are the cause of nearly all wars. In other areas the trick is relatively new, or newly reinvented and perfected. = = = = = Fresh thought: INERTIA is the best protection against demons. Nature has two ways of creating inertia. In simple inanimate objects, it's just good old Newtonian mass. In living things, inertia is created by NEGATIVE FEEDBACK plus MEMORY. We hold onto a template of previous conditions or previous limb positions, and use NEGATIVE FEEDBACK to resist EXTERNALLY FORCED changes. When we're pushed or yanked around by external forces, physically or mentally, a healthy system uses T-cells or muscles or perceptual shifts to COUNTERACT the external push and restore EQUILIBRIUM. Psychopaths HATE inertia and equilibrium. Everything they do is exquisitely calculated to BREAK our natural stability and leave us PERFECTLY VULNERABLE to the microsecond-scale commands of the demon. The Federal Reserve can play this game easily now because the MONEY INERTIA of savings has been wiped out by ZIRP. All investors have been trained to rely on the microsecond-scale Github of IPOs and Share Value. The psyops monsters of Deepstate can manipulate masses easily now because the NEUROLOGICAL INERTIA of long-term memory has been wiped out by Room 101 via TV and social media. Warmakers can respond instantly to fake "attacks" because the BUREAUCRATIC INERTIA of a large drafted army has been wiped out. = = = = = How does this apply to the "virus" fake emergency? Not clear. Actual immunity hasn't changed. The number of people who understand immunity has decreased by attrition because the last real epidemic in USA was in 1968. Oldies who remember '57 and '68 aren't fooled by this fake "epidemic". The "social" "scientist" psychopaths definitely recognize this and are focusing specifically on oldies, trying to break through our mental immunity. So far they haven't succeeded. Still, this doesn't feel like the main variable. Is there some loss of inertia or storage in the medical system? I'm not seeing it, but maybe insiders recognize it. Until the holocaust started in March 2020, most real doctors and hospitals were still cautiously resistant to change. A new treatment needed to prove itself thoroughly by EXPERIENCE before being adopted. Then on March 1, ALL EXISTING SCIENCE was flipped upside down in a Github instant, and ALL EXISTING KNOWLEDGE was memoryholed. A system with functioning inertia can't be turned 180 degrees in one picosecond. An inanimate object like a building or a battleship will simply break up when you try such a maneuver with sufficient applied force. A living system with negative feedback will resist and overshoot, creating a powerful REVERSE turn that will smash the attempted turner. Neither of those responses happened. The entire system was weightless and lifeless. The countries and states that have entirely or partly resisted the holocaust have cultural and industrial inertia. The countries are compact, ethnically uniform, and economically 'flat'. Belarus is Tanh, the essence of NEGATIVE FEEDBACK inertia. The resistant states in Dixie have real industry and strong cultural MEMORY. Significantly, they still REMEMBER and retain a MENTAL IMMUNE RESPONSE to a genocidal invasion and occupation by Wall Street in 1861.

If a military blackout consists merely in discontinuing past methods of illumination, it well may delay and confuse the defenders as well as the enemy. If unmodified darkness should interfere radically with necessary traffic movement, or if it should cripple production, facilitate sabotage or lead to panics, then its result would be much the same as if the enemy actually destroyed property and morale by bombing. But since blackouts seem necessary under present conditions, it is comforting to know that through the development of new luminous materials it is possible to alleviate some of the inconveniences and hazards of complete darkness; it is possible to provide "storage batteries" of light as substitutes for lamp bulbs, luminous signs, or the usual signals and markers during emergencies. Incited by the impact of blackouts and stimulated by wartime needs, phosphorescent materials have developed rapidly and are now becoming useful tools in the lighting art. Generally speaking, these materials are zinc and cadmium sulphides in one group (greens, yellows) and calcium or strontium sulphides (blues) in another, with traces of other inorganic compounds.Phosphorescence didn't really catch on, and certainly didn't continue, except in watch dials. We've gained the false impression that phosphorescence is always radioactive, but most of the compounds are natural and 'organic'. = = = = = ** How futile is gathering facts? The futility can be proved by simple logic. The CDC doesn't listen to the CDC's own facts. From the fucking start of the holocaust, CDC's own published numbers have shown clearly that the "virus", if any, is NOT AN EPIDEMIC. From the fucking start, the deaths in CDC's own published data have been almost entirely among people in nursing homes and hospices, people SCHEDULED TO DIE. When the monsters won't listen to their OWN facts, there's no purpose in trying to bring EXTERNAL facts to their attention. They know the truth by fucking definition, and they continue to murder the world in direct contradiction to their own published data. Why do they publish data that disagrees with their actions? Sucker filter. Cults and scams always do this. If you want to select the craziest and fiercest adherents for your cult or fraud, you want ONLY the people who refuse to believe their own senses. = = = = = Later thought: Phosphorescent paint didn't gain popularity because blackouts were temporary, and electric power was reliable after WW2 thanks to FDR's hydro dams and infrastructure projects. Now electric power is no longer reliable, thanks to EPA's destruction of dams and nuke plants and coal plants and grids and forests. So phosphorescent paint might be worth trying again on the west coast where power has reverted to third world standards with government-forced blackouts.
