Mutually Assured Destruction: fear vs reality
From ACM March 1958. An article by WH Pickering, head of JPL, gives an explanation not usually heard.

The ICBM with a hydrogen warhead takes less than half an hour to reach its target. This means, that within a few years every city on the globe will be living with a threat of sudden death - its life dependent on one man's action. And that man is not the ruler of an enemy country, but the soldier on guard in an isolated ICBM launching site.

The least we can hope is that he is not one of those young hotheads who frequently exchange rifle shots across a frontier. But no matter who he is, his decision is the death sentence of the target city.

With this situation rapidly becoming an accepted fact, military strategists have concluded that the only answer is the threat of immediate and total retaliation. Conceptually, the enemy's missiles are detected on route and the retaliatory missiles are launched even before the enemy missiles have reached their targets.

Thus, even if the launching sites do not survive the targets, destruction of the enemy is achieved. Even after the anti-missile-missile has been perfected, this basic strategy would be maintained.

In other words, MAD was meant to guard against Deplorables in the military. Computers and MAD were meant to protect the elite world from Deplorables.

What really happened is the EXACT FUCKING OPPOSITE.

The computers were the hotheads, and a Russian Deplorable saved the world by making a HUMAN decision.

The newly publicized story of Stanislav Petrov slaps us with a couple of big lessons.

Petrov is the sanest man in the world, and thus the grumpiest man in the world.

Petrov saved the world from nuclear destruction in 1983.

He was manning the controls for part of Russia's nuclear arsenal, watching his radar and computer screens. Suddenly a blip appeared to be coming across the Arctic from North America. Then it was joined by four more blips in the same direction, but no more. Just five blips.

He had to think fast. There were four possibilities, formed into a truth table.

False indication, don't respond: End of his career. No other harm.

False indication, respond: Instant end of America, eventual end of humanity.

True indication, don't respond: Instant end of Russia, eventual end of humanity.

His decision was based on a knowledge of all these possibilities, plus an understanding of his instruments and the meaning of their readings. He decided that five blips could not be a real USA STRONG attack, because USA STRONG understood the End Of Humanity logic as well as he did. If USA STRONG was going to attack, it would be sending hundreds of missiles all at once because there wouldn't be a chance to send the rest after Russia's response.

He chose not to push the button, and we're all alive because he did.

It didn't exactly end his career, but he didn't get any rewards either. Now he's barely surviving on a pension, but he's fiercely loyal to Russia.

Lesson #1: Trust technicians. Trust metrology. A technician who understands his instruments will make the right decision far more often than a Professional who understands theories. The Professional will ignore obvious indications of bad readings, and will often intentionally falsify the readings, to keep his theory and his grants running.

Lesson #2: Especially for the beyond-evil hypermonsters who have been misruling USA STRONG since 1989. Don't underestimate Russians. Don't assume that they will surrender because you impose some economic hardships. They are accustomed to self-sufficiency and they are good at improvising.   Not so silly after all
A new measurement of the cerebellum is SHOCKING as usual.

It’s essentially a flat sheet with the thickness of a crepe, crinkled into hundreds of folds to make it fit into a compact volume about one-eighth the volume of the cerebral cortex. For this reason, the surface area of the cerebellum was thought to be considerably smaller than that of the cerebral cortex.

By using an ultra-high-field MRI machine to scan the brain and custom software to process the resulting images, an SDSU neuroimaging expert discovered the tightly packed folds actually contain a surface area equal to 80% of the cerebral cortex’s surface area. In comparison, the macaque’s cerebellum is about 30% the size of its cortex.

The neurons of the cerebellum are 80% of the neurons in the brain, so it shouldn't be a surprise that its surface area is large.

Also unsurprising: Science is snobbery. Scientists function by theory and tyranny. (Redundant and synonymous.) They have a POWERFUL disdain for people and animals who function by skills and culture and reality.

The cerebellum is the site for SKILLS and REALITY. The cortex is the site for theories and tyranny. Thus everyone knows that the cortex must be INFINITELY larger than the cerebellum, just as everyone knows the scientist is INFINITELY smarter than the plumber or waitress.

Maybe it's not so silly. Where is the tyranny now, and where are the sane and courageous non-tyrant governors? Most of the courageous non-tyrants are in the cerebellum, where people and skills matter. Florida, SC, Georgia, Tennessee. Aside from all that, let's go back to the point of the referenced article. Neurologists are just now realizing that their measurement of the SURFACE AREA of a brain part that has been identified and mapped and measured for hundreds of years was WILDLY WRONG.

If they can't even measure a macroscopic SURFACE AREA after several hundred years of working with it, why in the fuck should we trust them to measure ANYTHING AT ALL?

I've been noticing the same thing here from the start.

  Healthy immune response
The guy who runs the Spokane News FB page normally avoids going along with the media crowd. Occasionally he yields to the temptation and gets INSTRUCTED by his readers. It happened again with the Branded Swine Flu. He published the latest panic-generator and immediately got swarmed by a healthy immune response from Deplorable Mediaphage cells.

The media demons are trying to overwhelm our literal actual immunity with a BOMB BLAST of panic viruses coming from every direction. It's easy to avoid most bloodthirsty media, but we need to have a few places where we can pick up a little bit of real news about what's really happening here without being BLASTED with murderous panic and chaos.

Moderating specialized forums has always been a hard job. Do you kick out the asshole who really knows his stuff but can't stop lording it over others? Or do you stay loose and keep the asshole's valuable knowledge while losing some newbies? Alphia Hart discussed it often in his 1950's anti-Hubbard magazine Aberree. Third focus of idiocy:

I remain skeptical as to whether tactics like microtargeting and demographic profiling, whether used by political campaigns or foreign governments, are as effective at manipulating people as some critics fear, but I see nothing wrong with using legal and policy tools to stop malicious actors from trying to use these tools.

Nothing new about profiling. It's called knowing your customers. Scammers have always done the best job of knowing their customers. Now that our entire "economy" is mobs and rackets, nobody wants to train the suckers.

I still believe that, but here in 2020 I’m also haunted by the challenges we face everywhere in the world in this century, ranging from climate change to income inequality to the (not-unrelated) resurgence of populist xenophobia and even genocidal movements.

After the first few months it was clear that Brexit would never happen.

I stopped tracking the meaningless ins and outs, since it was permanently out.

I was wrong.

I underrated Boris, underrated Farage, and ABOVE ALL underrated the patient long-suffering British PEOPLE.



They were terminally tired of Kraut occupation. They had sacrificed everything in 1940 to avoid Kraut occupation, and then their evil government had invited the Krauts in.

They voted against Kraut occupation three times, and finally Boris got the message and GOT SHIT DONE.

If the government had RESPONDED TO NEGATIVE FEEDBACK in June 2016, the exit itself would have taken about one week, and the treaties with various countries would have been settled and done by 2017.

This is a victory for Farage, a victory for the British PEOPLE, and more broadly a victory for NEGATIVE FEEDBACK, which is another word for LIFE.

Populism: The government of THIS nation must serve the PEOPLE of THIS nation.

Putin leads by serving the people of Russia, and expects all his subordinates to do the same. Today he fired a provincial governor who had consistently showed disrespect for the people of his province.

Apparently the governor of the Chuvash region had laid down a record of mocking his local Deplorables. The last straw was a public ceremony where he handed the keys of new equipment to the head of the local firefighting agency. Instead of just handing over the keys, he held them high and made the fireman jump to retrieve them.

  Let's compare.
Let's compare a typical US infrastructure project with Russia's Crimea bridges.

During WW2 the Kaiser aluminum plant north of Spokane grew massive for war production, and remained massive afterward. Traffic heading north on Division and Market was constantly snarled. A superhighway was proposed and planned.

In the '80s, EPA and offshoring killed the aluminum plant. It's still nominally there, but not much bigger than a machine shop. Dozens of employees, not thousands. No reason for a superhighway.

In 2000 the superhighway finally started. Whole neighborhoods were bought out and torn down to make room for the project. Every section required environmental impact statements and archeological digs to check for ancient relics. Nobody worried about the modern Deplorables who were kicked out, because Deplorables are EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE.

The project has been on hold for a year because the next scheduled section formerly included a railroad yard that might have allowed a few drops of oil to penetrate the ground. Gaia won't allow us to TOUCH deconsecrated ground, so the section needs to be re-engineered as a skyway.

Now the whole project has been halted indefinitely because of Tim Eyman's latest idiot ZERO TAX referendum. The halt leaves several major intersections CLOSED indefinitely, "preparing" for construction that won't happen. So the project ends up massively INCREASING congestion and accidents, after wasting two billion dollars on NOTHING.

So we have a highway that goes nowhere and COULDN'T SERVE A PURPOSE EVEN IF COMPLETED, and we have thousands of displaced Deplorables, and the "legal" appeals and counterappeals and countercounterappeals and countercountercounterappeals continue to make lawyers rich.

If Eyman's ZERO TAX permanently halts EVERYTHING, including the bureaucrats and lawyers, maybe it will serve a good purpose after all. But we know that won't happen. Bureaucrats never stop. The legal process will continue forever with no purpose, just as the construction continued forever with no purpose. PARKINSON.

Deutsche Welle, normally solid Soros, seems to be wavering just a bit, and one Kraut judge is also wavering just a bit.

DW has an article, categorized as News not Opinion, which acknowledges a big part of the problem:

Thousands of migrants in Germany have applied for asylum multiple times and return to the country after having been deported, according to a report by German newspaper Die Welt am Sonntag published on Sunday.

There are nearly 5,000 asylum-seekers who have reapplied for asylum after being deported from Germany since 2012, according to the report, which cites official government figures. Some of the asylum-seekers willingly left Germany, knowing deportation was imminent. The then returned to German to make another application for asylum, according to the report.

Asylum seekers who have been deported and have entry bans are jailed for a few months for re-entering the country, according to the report. Arrests and longer sentences are rare.

Catch and release is a HUGE problem in USA STRONG as well, and not just in immigration. It's an even bigger problem with ordinary criminals. The police are trying to do their job, but the "courts" are smashing civilization and overburdening the cops with 5000-time PROFESSIONAL CRIMINALS who commit the same crime several times a day, except for occasional hour-long coffee breaks behind bars.

Normal people, not just ULTRA ULTRA ULTRA ULTRA FAR FAR FAR FAR RIGHT KKKTRUMPHITLERHITLER EXTREMISTHITLER WHITEHITLER NATIONALISTHITLER TERRORISTHITLERS, see this in their daily lives and know it's a problem, but the media and dysgovernment NEVER EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE the problem. Anyone who ACCURATELY OBSERVES the problem is jailed solidly and permanently, not for an hour.

Now the premier Soros Satan of EU media has said the same thing that the ULTRA TERRORISTHITLERS have been saying for years.

A Kraut judge has also acknowledged the truth of reality, though in a peculiar and abstract way.

A German judge ruled that an election campaign poster reading "Migration kills!" was a partly accurate description of reality and does not incite racial hatred. The campaign poster was used ahead of the European parliamentary elections earlier in 2019. In full, it reads: "Stop the invasion: Migration kills!"

Judge Andreas Hofer, who made the decision, cited "historical movements of people" from 5,000 years ago to the present day that directly led to "death and ruin," including the expulsion of the Israelites from Egypt and the colonization of the Americas. On that basis, he said that the poster "at least partly reflected reality."

Huh? He's missing the point entirely. It's true that every movement of people involves trouble and conflict and deaths, but each migration has a different PURPOSE. The current migration in Europe is neither ordinary colonialism nor an expulsion. It's an intentional invasion of migrants sponsored and inspired by Soros. The migrants themselves are not the problem. Soros is the problem, and the EU/US/UK dysgovernments who work in tandem with Soros to SLAUGHTER their own Deplorables.

Are we seeing a minor signal of shifting elite opinion? Hard to tell.

Here's a HARDASS REALIST article at Strategic-Culture.

Poor, naive Evo Morales. Instead of seeking secure refuge in a sovereign friendly country, he must be languishing now in the catacombs of Mexico City, where his tormentors are making sure that he will remain isolated and is never allowed to attempt a comeback. They are a wicked lot, but also undeniably sharp learners. They will use every tool at their disposal to make sure Morales does not spring on them a nasty surprise, as Lula just did.

The article details several groups that have been working openly for USA and Soros. Morales failed to arrest and execute their leaders, so they were free to take him down when they chose to.

Plain fact: A leader who wants to serve the people needs to ELIMINATE the enemies of the people. Erdogan, for all his failings in other areas, did exactly the right thing when Soros ran a coup against him. Erdogan arrested everyone who was involved at all levels, and sorted them out after arresting them.

Other leaders have done the same thing, sometimes with less force but always with enough force for the situation. Hungary kicked out the Sorosians BEFORE the coup, thus obviating the need for force.

CIVILIZATION can survive in a few places by RUTHLESSLY ERADICATING the opponents of civilization.

Always nice to get immediate verification. We know that the purpose of the Carbon Cult is to slaughter Deplorables. This was implicit in the original 1975 CIA manifesto, but not often emphasized.

A new document states the goal explicitly. Via ZH, 11000 "scientists" have signed an open petition calling for slaughter of all Deplorables.

They don't say Deplorables verbally, but the logic of their proposal forces it.

Who is reproducing? Deplorable countries, and Deplorable areas and neighborhoods in Sorosian countries. Specifically, real Muslims and real Christians are reproducing. Everyone else is declining.

So a population control project necessarily focuses its attention on Christians and Muslims. Secular Western groups and the Oriental area are declining on their own and don't need an extra 'boost'.

This religion-based genocide must be highly satisfying to those 11000 "scientists". They found a way to kill believers without saying it openly.

  Didn't need to ask
Now that Morales has won re-election, I wondered whether Bolivia is the next regime-change target.

Before Evo, Bolivia was a CIA cocaine colony, devoted solely to supplying the genocidal "needs" of our internal chaos-generating gangs like DEA. Morales got rid of Graybill, nationalized the mining industry, and created a modern self-sufficient country from scratch.

INTOLERABLE UNACCEPTABLE ALL OPTIONS ON THE TABLE.

Needless to say, the OPTIONS are already being activated, even before the election is verified.

BBC declares the election invalid because the counting was slow, and begins the Guaido process of defining the opposition as the real government. Now we must invade and bomb Bolivia down to bedrock to exterminate the "illegitimate" Morales.

Update next day: Now Rubio has joined the regime-change chorus. Fuck you, Rubio. Fuck you up the ass for the rest of eternity. You and Hillary and Trump and all the other regime-changers. Fuck you.


There's an important difference between Bolivia and Venezuela. Evo, like AMLO and FDR, is highly competent and is GETTING SHIT DONE. He's easy to defend. Maduro apparently wants to work for his people, but he's so utterly incompetent (or subverted?) that it's hard to defend him. At every step he fails to make the correct move.

  Always the same
I bumped into this while looking for info on an old gadget called the Hipp Chronoscope. It seemed like an interesting 'model' for my latest set of Lost Gadgets, and I was trying to find good diagrams and pics. After bumping into this, I decided to skip the Chronoscope. Every tool can be used for good or evil, but this one seems to have been primarily evil.

This 1922 experiment shows several things.

(1) "Social" "science" has always been about cold mechanical torture and evil. The CIA torture chambers, planned and staffed by academic "social" "scientists", are nothing new. The Milgram experiment, which was recently "ameliorated", was nothing special or unusual.

(2) "Social" "science" has always tried to avoid #desistance and keep "both" "sides" playing the deadly game.

(3) Africans have a stronger moral sense than Euros. (As I've been observing for a long time.)

The Faradic shock was then used. However, this involved a serious difficulty in getting subjects to continue the experiment after the first day. One of them — subject C, the colored janitor — had to be bribed, and even then he would not continue the experiment under any circumstances.

The results follow:

Subject (N.). After eight shocks the subject responded (without the shock) on the ninth trial, saying, "I got away from it." On the next two trials (the 10th and nth) he also responded and laughed. On the 37th trial he did not respond and was punished (shocked). After that the reactions to the positive stimulus without the shock were frequent, as shown in the accompanying time curve (Figure VI). However, after having obtained the measure of 31 "conditioned reflexes," the subject would under no consideration continue the experiment. We therefore then took 36 conscious discrimination reactions to the hammer and released him.

The white grad students were mainly concerned with finding ways to cheat. The colored janitor knew the whole pile of shit was wrong. He wanted to keep his job, so he went along for a moment, but his moral sense overcame his fear quickly.

He #desisted, which was unthinkable. "He HAD TO be bribed". Keeping the experiment going was an automatic necessity, and all participants HAD TO remain involved. Morality and scruples HAD TO give way before the juggernaut of "science".

And what is the "scientific" question here? The purpose of the experiment? We didn't need experiments to prove that people learn to avoid pain. We needed experiments to REFINE AND PERFECT OUR TORTURE TECHNIQUES.

  A message across the ages
The first organized (pre-electric) telegraph network was the 1793 Chappe system.

Short synopsis: The inventor, Claude Chappe, was a tragic figure, the classic introvert who let perfectionism kill him. Like most successful inventors, he had business-minded brothers who could carry the business side of the project.

Claude's first attempt was a clock-style telegraph. Each station had a synchronized continually rotating letter dial. The upper panel was white on one side and black on the other, and pivoted vertically. The sending station would give the panel a quick turn, switching the color, when the desired letter was on the clock; the receiver would see the flash and record the corresponding letter from his own clock.



Revolutionary mobs disapproved of this invention and burned it.



The family managed to get the attention of the ideologues, who saw the value of a nationwide system to carry military commands and propaganda. Claude's second invention was built quickly, with Chappe mechanisms mounted on every tall building and every available hill. After the revolution was replaced by the usual neocons, Napoleon expanded the network even more for military purposes.

But it seemed that the more his idea spread, the more Claude Chappe was beset by rivals, claiming they had had the idea first, or that they had a better idea, or that the clockmaker Bréguet was the real genius behind the invention. In 1805, suffering from depression, he committed suicide by throwing himself into a well at the main Telegraph Administration.

Perfectionism leads to the predictable all-or-nothing tragedy.

The business-minded brothers continued running the system until 1845, when it was replaced by a direct electrical metaphor in order to retain the SKILLS and continue the employment of the operators. Claude missed the chance to participate in the long success.

But maybe it's a good thing that he missed the later development.

Around that time, twin brothers in Bordeaux, François and Louis Blanc, came up with a plan to bribe telegraph operators between Paris and Bordeaux to introduce “typos” (the French use the delightful word coquilles) into messages sent across the system; the coquilles indicated the direction of the Paris stock market each day. This allowed the brothers to beat the Bordeaux market in government bonds. They were eventually caught, and even tried, but since they had not broken an existing law (laws generally lag behind new technology), they were not punished.

They ran profitable business there but it was just the first little step to their success in Hesse-Homburg near Frankfurt, where brothers signed a contract with a monarch because of debts of the city and in order to develop tourism industry. It happened that the Prince of Monaco had recently legalized gambling, so "The Magician of Homburg" became that first person to establish a casino operation in Monaco.

Government contracts + casinos = absolute corruption + absolute impunity.

I've "built" a model of the Chappe system, using the Chappe code. The model is sending a Carverian message from an introvert who has (more or less) conquered perfectionism to the ghost of Chappe, and to other introverts who tragically allow perfection to delete future joy.



A closeup look at the controls. Existing pictures are vague, so I designed a setup that would work if implemented. The pictures show ropes between the pulleys, but chains would have been better.



This system required considerable skill and brute strength. The stationnaires were expected to work 12/7/365 for 38 francs a month, roughly $150 now. They had to watch up and down the line for messages from other telegraphs, and then twist their wrists and bodies to resend the message. No wonder they were easy to bribe.

By contrast, the early dial telegraphs required no skill and no strength, and Morse requires considerable skill and no strength.

Here's a somewhat speculative model of the original clock-style. Happystar demonstrates the operation of the pivoted planche, which would be visible for about a mile in ideal conditions. This device would be especially suitable for night use. A single fixed torch could illuminate the planche; if the bright side was reflective metal, the signal could be visible for many miles.



The clock-style would require two people to operate properly. Polistra would be reading the text and watching the clock. When the next letter was about to hit, she would give a vocal command to Happystar. No skill, some strength.

The Poser set will be released when I finish the House-Brett printing telegraph, another no skill no strength system that didn't get very far.

Raises an interesting question: Successful systems required either physical strength or mental skill. Telegraphs that anyone could operate didn't succeed.

Stupid footnote: I initially assuméd that the namé had to be Chappé. Like most Americans, I automatically think that Frenchay worday alway enday with é. Laysay lay bon ton roulaaaay! The name just doesn't look right as Chappe, but in fact it is Chappe. One syllable.

Not quite stupid footnote: It's odd that Chappe's code didn't include separate characters for the various diacritics. A business or military message could be ambiguous without them. He used the Latin tradition of i=j, but included k and w as separate letters. Both are odd choices for French, where i and j are fully distinct while k and w are foreign and rare.   More on Real World Math
I've occasionally rambled about Real World Math. Using abstract equations works beautifully in the world of abstract equations, but leads us to some serious failures when we believe the world works like math.

The most obvious and most intentional failure is statistics. The mean can be figured in an equation, so we use it instead of the median. In fact the mean is rarely a useful 'handle' on real situations. The median is nearly always a better representation of middle or typical. Economists and Share Value Demons use the mean to persuade us that making Bezos richer is good for everyone. Other stats are just fancy ways of lying. An extremely old observation, but we still ignore it and still use stats as weapons.

A more subtle failure is thresholds and log-ness. Our senses function logly, not linearly, and we sense deltas, not steady states, and we sense things when they run over a threshold. Closed-form math can't handle any of this. A well-written algorithm can crudely approximate it.

In both of the above cases, computers are actually pretty good at handling Real World Math, but we don't use them properly because we don't understand that computers are sorters, not calculators.

Here's a new thought, still sort of tentative and outlined. I was waiting until I could fill in the details, then decided that the best way to fill them in is to publish it first.

We all learn the commutative, associative and distributive properties in math class. These three work together to make abstract calculation a lot easier, and they also work in a computer.

The commutative property is unnatural.

It doesn't work in any aspect of Real World Math. In real situations, the ORDER of addition is always crucial.

Real things, including lifespans, have a limited capacity. When you get near the top of the tank or the end of the lifespan, it's a lot harder to fill the tank or add the next element to the life.

Real tasks have a specific order of labor. You can't decide to do Step 3 before Step 2.

In chemistry and cooking, the order of ingredients is crucial. A recipe says add 0.5 cup of water, stir and beat, then add the other 1.5 cups. Reversing the order ruins the result.

In driving, the order of control inputs is crucial. Say the brake pedal goes down 2 inches at full pressure. When making a stop, you first move 1.5 inches to start decelerating, then the last half inch after you get near full halt. If you first move a half inch and then the last 1.5, you'll never stop at all.

Diminishing returns, or negative returns, are the NORM. Tanh and log handle this reality.

So it's not surprising that neurons reflect reality with log response.

Look at any war in recent memory. You'll find the war was started by a rich tribe who wanted even more riches (or more macho) ... or by a rich tribe who wanted to bring down a competing rich tribe.

Impoverished people are concrete. They understand how life works. Above all they instinctively understand Diminishing Returns, or in mathy terms the sigmoid curve or tanh function. Life is all about the tanh.



Poor people understand the limits at both ends. Static friction and drag. You have to push the cart for a while before it starts to move; then you can move it faster by pushing harder; but beyond a certain speed extra effort doesn't gain more speed. Diminishing returns.

More broadly, a certain amount of effort is needed to start anything. You have to build a fence around your livestock or plow the fields or set up the fruit stand by the roadside.



After that, you're in the small linear region, where increasing effort will bring increasing return. Water the crops more, or feed the hogs more, you get more food. Spend more hours selling fruit, you get more money.



And poor people also understand that beyond a certain point your results will hit a ceiling, a saturation point where the friction negates your effort. So they don't try to quadruple their returns, and they don't try to steal their neighbor's livestock.



Most importantly, the poor understand the emotional aspects of Diminishing Returns. They know that having more cattle than you can handle is not better than having enough cattle to feed your kids. They sense that enjoyment does not continue to increase after you reach sufficiency.

Rich educated people don't know tanh. They have never planted a crop or turned a wrench or rocked a cradle. They have dealt with life at a clean distance, through lawyers and spreadsheets and Disposable Mexican Servants. They assume that life runs on a straight line.



They believe added effort will always yield added income. Most importantly they assume that increased income will continue to yield more enjoyment. Rich educated man thinks: "I have lots of Money and Power and Lebensraum, and I enjoy them. If I have twice as much Money and Power and Lebensraum, I will enjoy them twice as much."

That's why rich educated people make war. They don't know where to stop. They don't know that pleasure needs a foundation and has a roof. They are too fucking stupid to understand tanh.

The associative property fails for similar reasons. See cooking and chemistry. Grouping ingredients 1 and 2 together gives a different result than grouping ingredients 2 and 3 together.

The distributive property is removed from reality by one step, so it's more safely contained within the abstract world and less likely to distort our thoughts.
