  Modernizing the Self-Explanatory Sentence

Maybe my old 'Self-Explanatory Sentence' is outdated. In modern times there could be a better way of expressing the idea. A few words that sum up a life, provided you know how things work.

Good example in an earlier post today.
The painting is a portrait of the current leader of the Republican presidential race, Donald Trump – painted with menstrual blood. Artist Sarah Levy titled the portrait "Whatever." It depicts Trump mid-sentence with one eye completely blotted out by red and his infamous hair windswept with streaks of dark blood.
Or this item:
Dr Kathleen Richardson, a robot ethicist at De Montfort University in Leicester, wants to raise awareness of the issue and persuade those developing sex robots to rethink how their technology is used. "Sex robots seem to be a growing focus in the robotics industry and the models that they draw on - how they will look, what roles they would play - are very disturbing indeed." She believes that they reinforce traditional stereotypes of women and the view that a relationship need be nothing more than physical.
These paragraphs are overlong. If you know how things work, a couple words get the idea across.

Solution: Spam.

With ordinary spam, a name like YourBlowJob@4ma2on.com tells you all you need to know. A subject like Urgents Inheritment For You tells you all you need to know. The rest of the story is automatic.

Same with these. After you see the name and subject, the rest of the story fills itself in.

If you saw these in your in-box, you wouldn't need to click on them. Self-Explanatory Spam.

  Another 'makes you wonder'

Press release from Volvo:
Imagine a robot that quietly and discreetly enters your neighborhood, collects your refuse bin and empties it into the refuse truck. It is done without waking the sleeping families and without heavy lifting for the refuse truck’s driver. This is the purpose of ROAR, a joint project with the aim to develop tomorrow's smart transport solutions.

The Volvo Group is currently working on a joint venture together with Chalmers University of Technology and Mälardalen University in Sweden, Penn State University in the United States, and the waste recycling company Renova, to develop a robot that interacts with the refuse truck and its driver to accomplish the work.
Not needed and won't work.

Not needed because trash trucks already do the heavy lifting. Tomorrow is trash day. You roll your wheeliebin out to the curb or alley tonight. If alley, the bin probably lives in the correct place already, so you don't roll anything. The truck uses its giant claw to lift the bin and dump it into the truck.

Won't work because people have fences with locked gates. If you're letting the robot find the wheeliebin, it's going to be blocked by all sorts of obstacles.

So: What's the point? Clearly the fences and obstacles are the point. The bin is just a metaphor, like an 'animal model' in medical research. Common trick when running classified military research at Penn State. Oh! This research is also at Penn State. What an interesting coincidence.

  Thanks, Ralph 13

A different type of evidence for the beyond beyond beyond insanity of the elites. You could say this is the good side of their monumental delusion, because it limits their own power slightly.

Establishment types think they are damaging Trump by shit like this:
The painting is a portrait of the current leader of the Republican presidential race, Donald Trump – painted with menstrual blood. Artist Sarah Levy titled the portrait "Whatever." It depicts Trump mid-sentence with one eye completely blotted out by red and his infamous hair windswept with streaks of dark blood.
On the other partisan "side", Establishment types in Britain think they are damaging Corbyn by shit like this:
The new Labour leader faced heavy criticism for standing in silence while God Save the Queen was played during a Battle of Britain remembrance ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral attended by the Prime Minister, Defence Secretary and scores of military leaders.
You really have to wonder. Can the Establishment be that stupid? Have these alien blobs ever encountered an actual human? Obviously not, but at the very least you'd think their consultants and advisers could read books about actual humans .... Oh. That's the problem, isn't it? The books are all written by "social" "scientists", who live inside the same alien bubble. The writers have the same utterly bizarre notions about human behavior. The BonkersDome is hermetically sealed.

You want any more fucking EVIDENCE?

Idiot tabloid headline:

Islamic State could unleash the plague and cause the BLACK DEATH
SICK Islamic State militants could use the deadly plague as a weapon of war, a British SAS hero has warned.Chris Ryan said its widely known every superpower in the world is holding a range of deadly viruses including the plague, which a terror group such as ISIS could seize and unleash. It would see thousands of victims become covered in huge weeping boils, before suffering a slow and painful death. The bubonic plague has been taking hold across the west coast of America infecting people in six states and ISIS's thirst for shocking new ways to kill means an endemic is a real possibility
Why bother to speculate about what some group COULD do?

Simple fucking syllogism.

Who is ACTUALLY DISTRIBUTING anthrax VIA FEDEX? The US "government".

Who is ACTUALLY DISTRIBUTING live plague virus VIA FEDEX? Ditto.

Therefore. Who is ISIS? Ditto.

  Dry soil

Latest in the Euro Bonkers Competition: Now that Hungary has SANELY protected its own borders from the migrants who were created by EU/US/UK hyperaggression, the stream is flowing through Serbia instead.

Goldman-Claude Juncker, the unspeakably mad dictator of EU, is going even more bonkers, demanding even more tyranny.

Is there a solution? Think termites.

After a swarm is started there's really not much you can do. You can divert the swarm toward the outside, but there's no way to completely protect one room from the swarm.

The best solution to termites is prevention. You have to make your house unattractive, which basically means keeping the foundation and innards dry, and keeping a band of dry soil around the house.

Australia did the right thing with a different swarm several years ago, and it worked. Turned back every boat, forced them to go elsewhere. Dry soil. (Now that Satan has retaken Australia, I doubt that solutions will continue. Remains to be seen.)

In the geography of the Mexico/US border, dry soil is literal. A FUCKING WALL with a literal NO-GO ZONE on one side. Trump has it right. In the geography of Europe, with many quasi-separate countries and many water routes, a single wall won't do much.

The real problem with EU and US isn't lack of technique, it's a wild drive toward suicide. Our alien "leaders" intentionally created angry nests in places like Colombia, Guatemala, Iraq and Syria, then made our own houses wet and sweet. Our "leaders" specifically want to destroy our own people, but they find it inconvenient to do the job directly. It's not us, it's those Dreamers. We need to bring them in and feed and house them because Human Rights.

What is this Human Rights thing that forces us to commit total world suicide (except for the Chosen and Israel, of course)? Human Rights is demonstably another name for the wildest and nastiest psychosis ever imagined.

14 DAYS SINCE START OF FINAL PURGE.

BBC thinks the problem is that the migrants don't have access to a free lawyer.

And again.

BBC thinks the problem is that the migrants don't have access to a free lawyer.

Still can't process it. I can't navigate through more than a few dozen layers of barkingmadness.

"Wildest psychosis ever imagined" is an infinite x infinite x infinite understatement. Nobody ever imagined this.

  Regeneration 1

This is a nerdy bucketlist item. Earlier non-nerdy bucketlist items faded as theory was replaced by fact. The bucketlist switched to more achievable and constructive pleasures.

I've been opening up those pleasures in the last few months, and the benefits are clear. Brainpower grows and time gets longer. When I look back on a week or month, it feels substantial. For some reason software work, paid or otherwise, doesn't 'fatten up' time this way.

This particular item fills a gap in my radio experience, a gap in both building and using.

Back in the '50s I had built the simplest possible crystal radio using a razor blade and safety pin. It pulled in noise but didn't really work. I had also used one of these commercial xtal sets, the little rocket with its nosecone pulling out to tune the ferrite antenna. The rocket worked surprisingly well on local stations.

Around the same time I built and used a Philmore 2-tran TRF set, which also worked well on strong local stations.

Later on I built a Heathkit superhet, and of course all modern radios are superhets. Plenty of experience there.

So I had knowledge and experience of simple xtal, TRF and superhet. I'd always wondered how a regenerative set felt and sounded. I'd read about them but never experienced one.

Now the gap has been filled by a kit.

= = = = = = = = = = =

I'll do a proper 'unboxing' on the MFJ regen receiver kit, MFJ8100K.

Opened the shipping box, found the case:

containing the parts:

The box also included a piece of paper saying that MFJ has put its manuals online instead of printing them. Found the PDF, and immediately found a problem. The PDF didn't include any of the pictures. No schematic, no PC board view, and (most importantly) no pic of the coil you wind yourself. Was I missing a trick in displaying the PDF, or was it bad?

Emailed MFJ. They responded in a few hours. The PDF was indeed wrong, and they added the pics and re-uploaded.

Wonderful to deal with a small company that WANTS TO PLEASE ITS CUSTOMERS!

Ready for work:

The assembling went smoothly and took about 6 hours spread over three days. EXCEPT:

I had to spend an extra two hours correcting two mistakes that were MY fault. I had switched a 15-ohm resistor (brown-green-black) with a 1M resistor (brown-black-green), and then put one of them in the wrong place when trying to refit. Refitting is hard work, requiring careful use of solderwick and 'prosthetic leads' on the shortened resistor....

.....but in the end it came out right.

I can partly blame MFJ for making the latter error easier. (Wrong place on refit.) Comparing with the little Pixie that I built last month with NO errors ... The Pixie is much smaller with about the same number of parts. Cramped metropolis vs prairie settlement.

My old eyes should have caused more problems in the urban metropolis, but it was the other way around. I think the difference is in the sequence of placement. Pixie came without instructions, which ALSO may have caused me to work more carefully. Moral hazard. Just a parts list with all Rs first, then all Cs, then all heat-sensitive parts, then the big plugs. This sequence eliminated blockages or coverings. MFJ has you place some large trimmers and lytics before some of the little resistors, which blocks the markings and allows confusion.

Next time I build a kit, I'll use the Pixie sequence. I'll format the parts list as a table in smallest-first order, print it out BIG, place the actual parts ON the right side of the actual paper, then work directly from this parts list / parts bin.

= = = = =

The MFJ worked as soon as I turned it on. Shortwave signals are sparse here, so I had to make my own signal by V-ing the Pixie. Tuning the MFJ without the knobs or dial markings, the V came through in just one spot on the tuning cap. No splatter even at a distance of 3 feet with an open case. And I could get a nice BFO tone on the CW by turning the regen control up, just as it's meant to work.

YAY!

After I verified that something was happening, I put it in the case, making it more stable, and attached a somewhat longer antenna. Then I could hear a ham talking on SSB, and used the regen to BFO the SSB as well. Spokane has poor SW reception, so this isn't going to be a big source of incoming entertainment. That isn't the point anyway. Building and understanding is the point.

[Later, after attaching a 40m whip antenna: Lots of good stuff that I hadn't heard before on other receivers, with emphasis on CW and SSB. I'm starting to think that Spokane isn't so awful for shortwave after all, and I'm also realizing that the house's aluminum siding wasn't really the problem. This receiver simply isn't bothered by power-line noise OR by the computer running in the same room.]

= = = = =

A few inconsistencies in the instructions and lists. Only the last one (8) really matters.

(1) On R3, the schematic says 470 but the parts list, actual parts, and instructions say 10k.

(2) The volume pot is actually 300, not 250 as the manual says.

(3) Instructions for caps are probably a bit too specific for beginners.

For instance: Install C4, .1µF (body marking: 104Z)

The letter on ceramic caps is the percent tolerance. The supplied caps have various letters. This doesn't matter because bypass caps rarely need a precise value; but a beginner could be confused by finding 104M when the instruction says 104Z.

(4) The lugs on the tuning cap don't quite fit in the holes. I had to carefully trim part of the lugs off.

(5) The parts numbering isn't consecutive. The Rs go from 1 to 20, but R10,14,15,16,18 don't actually exist. Apparently these were 'simplified out' over the years. This isn't an inconsistency because the parts, instructions and parts list all agree on which Rs are there; but consecutive numbering would make proofreading and error-checking easier.

(6) L4 is .33 uH on the schematic and .47 uH in real life. Again probably a revision.

(7) Instructions tell you to push the LED into the board "as far as it will go", solder, then bend it forward so it will pop through the hole in front of panel. Can't have both. I went ahead and put it all the way in and left it vertical. It's still visible from the front, even if it doesn't come out of the panel. If you want to bend it, you need to leave it above the board 3/8" or so.

(8) There are three panel-mounting nuts and washers, all the right size for the two pots, but the plastic bandswitch is larger than the pots. The nuts don't fit the bandswitch.

On a hunch, I opened up an old Delco [superhet!] radio that I use as a clock stand. It's unrepairable, so its volume pot will never be turned. Sure enough, the pot nut fits the new plastic bandswitch perfectly!

Here's the basically finished MFJ saying THANKS to Old Master Delco.

This is Part 1 of a series. Part 2 here, part 3 here.

  No self-defense allowed.

Satan hates all types of self-defense, including farmers defending their property against predatory animals.
A Palouse farmer who chased down and killed a wolf in a crop field on Oct. 12, 2014, has been given what wolf advocates are calling a sweet deal by Whitman County prosecutor Denis Tracy. According to the Capital Press, Jonathan Rasmussen, 38, has been charged with killing a state endangered species, a gross misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $5,000 fine. The farmer won’t face criminal prosecution for shooting a gray wolf if he pays $100 and commits no further game violations for the next six months, Tracy announced today.
Hypersatan dba "Tracy" is clearly trying to avoid a jury trial, knowing full well that no jury will convict a farmer for doing the right thing, choosing the correct and moral and SCIENTIFIC action.

Remains to be seen if the farmer will take the deal. Wouldn't blame him for taking it. He's already been through a year of Kafkan hell.

When you're up against Satan, juries are pretty much your only chance, and even then the relief may only be temporary. Higher "courts" are eager to jump in and SMASH all weak little attempts to defend justice or logic or sanity or science.

  Not the God Particle

YESTERDAY'S headline: Austrian Chancellor likens Hungary's tough refugee policies to Nazi deportations

TODAY'S headline: Austria deploys army to impose border controls

From "You're Hitler!" to "Oops, so am I" in two days.

Maybe we need to talk about Godwin's Particle instead of Godwin's Law. Godwin's Particle has a half-life of one day, which is about the same as the isotope Fermium-252.

Everyone is hopping onto Satan's reference frame now! Getting crowded!

  Animals think fall is coming

The Weather Bureau thinks we're pretty much done with heat for the year.

I HOPE SO.

Today the birds and squirrels are expressing the same opinion in raucous style. Birds are gathering in giant Robust Debate Clubs, weighing down the power lines, flying back and forth en masse. Squirrels are digging and making sounds they don't normally make.

My first thought: If yesterday was really the last warm day, where are the aphids?

Last year I put together a fairly consistent pattern, with late Sept and late Oct alternating. Looking back at the pattern, I'd guess this year will be one of the late Oct years. So I shouldn't expect the aphids just yet.

  I don't get it.

For a long time I resisted installing AdBlockers on Firefox. I believe in paying for stuff, and I figured that viewing the ads was how you pay for good content. Subscription SHOULD be how you pay, but subscription doesn't work on the web.

Finally a few weeks ago I gave in and installed AdBlocker. Why? Because the content SIMPLY WASN'T AVAILABLE when the ads were allowed. Several useful websites like ZeroHedge were popping up so many layers of high-memory video ads, so relentlessly and rapidly, that the actual text was never reachable. I could see the hard-disk churning over and over while the memory usage piled up.

Why do advertisers do this? Why do they FORCE people to eliminate their ads? I don't get it.

  Backwards question

RCS points to a study that tries to ask why our muscles and bones and motor system always seek maximum efficiency.
For example, when you walk at any given speed, you’ll settle into a cadence – the number of steps you take per minute – that minimizes your energy cost at that speed. It’s a remarkable feat of physiology that invites practical questions: Is there any benefit to learning a new running style, for example, if your body has already figured out its most efficient stride?
Seems like the question is backwards. Laziness or minimum movement is default. Non-living things spend their entire existence non-moving. Among all the phyla of multicellular life, the vast majority spend their lives in one place. Plants, hydra, bryozoans, etc.

The real question is why SOME living things decided to move, why they "waste" energy when they could be holding still on the ocean floor.

I dare you to answer that question without invoking a designer.

After you get past that question, the rest is obvious. Even if we use the standard TED-talk Darwinism, hunter-gatherer and savannah and saber-tooth tiger and so on, the answer to the efficiency question is simple. You survive if you can get away from the saber-tooth tiger. Getting away more than once requires the fastest possible net movement without using up all your stored nutrition. And the fastest net movement, the max distance from the predator's inertial path, requires minimizing the internal stuff. Perfect getaway = use passively stored elastic energy to make one vertical jump. Fleas do it that way. Maximum net move for minimum internal thrashing. Cats sometimes come close to the ideal.

For big hefty critters like us, a single vertical jump won't help. Instead we use legs and/or wings for 3d motion. Alpha and gamma sensors in long muscles sense both stretch and acceleration, and the brain's motor system uses those signals to shape the gait for max net motion.

The "study" then asks:
It’s not clear whether this trait has developed through millennia of evolution, whether we learn these patterns individually as we grow up, or whether we’re constantly learning and relearning them on the fly.
Unnecessary and dumb questions. The alpha-gamma system is all you need. Tuning for best efficiency is AUTOMATIC, given a negative feedback system that senses displacement, velocity and acceleration. No complex brain is needed when you have the sensors. A few integrating and modulating neurons will do. And these sensors already show up in the simplest multi-celled moving animals.

Only one question remains: How did we get the SENSORS? How did they "evolve" by random mutation and selection?

Go ahead. Try. I'm not holding my breath, because that would be inefficient.

  Stopped meme

It's too easy to compare modern events to Munich 1938. I've done it a few times and regretted it later. But sometimes even a bad meme turns literal and concrete. Same two countries, same bad deal.

A Berlin source said agreeing not to “block” Mrs Merkel's defence plans is a “favour” that she would seek from Mr Cameron as he looks for her support in the renegotiation. “If you want favours, you have to give favours,” the source said.
Nuff said.

  Borderless and brainless

Convective thought while listening to Ebola aka BBC breaking down all borders and eliminating all heresy.

The concept of a borderless and brainless empire, as exemplified by EU and USA STRONG, is brand new.

Before the 20th century, empires didn't try to eliminate all distinctions among humans, didn't try to inject MY THOUGHT into YOUR BRAIN. From Persia to Rome to Ottoman to Britain, pre-20 emperors were more like farmers, and colonies were more like livestock. Colonies were expected to provide eggs or milk or meat, but the emperor didn't expect them to become Just Like Me. The emperor understood that Hindoos and Nigerians and Bulgarians had their own ways of doing and thinking, just as chickens and cows and horses have their own ways of doing and thinking. You get more milk and meat when you work WITH those natural differences.

Familiar example: Pontius Pilate didn't invoke "universal human rights" shit when the Judaeans wanted to execute a revolutionary. PP made it clear that Rome didn't have a problem with this particular radical, then let the locals do it their own way.

Since Lenin, emperors no longer expect colonies to be cows. Now colonies are expected to be My Internal Organs. Milk and eggs are no longer the purpose of owning an empire. Pure distilled power is the only goal. Any attempt by a colony to show its own behavior or mark its own boundary is ruthlessly squashed by armies of T-cells, as we see now in EU and USA STRONG.

Now that Lenin has been combined with Goldman by neocons, the force is immensely magnified. Securitization works infinitely better than socialism. Mix and mash all enterprises into one big blob, then chop it up into indistinguishable pieces and use the pieces as poker chips in a rigged casino.

Nature is hard. Math is easy. 2

Carrying on from previous item.

Previous item was inspired by this:

The VOM came from Jameco with a thermocouple and a temperature scale. I didn't notice the extra feature when ordering, so the TC was a sort of bonus. I've played with it when trying to make my air conditioner perform better on hot days, but I could have done that without the measurement. Here it shows that my fingers are 90 degrees F. Yeah, okay. Didn't need to know that.

Mainly the yellow plug triggered a long set of resonances in my old technician mind. One of the projects I worked on at Penn State involved a whole bunch of TCs, and they all had the same type of plug.

The plug is like a uniform. It tells you what's on the 'business end' and what to expect. When you see this yellow plug, you know the business end is meant to measure temperature, and you know it's built to be calibrate-able. Even if the business end can't be physically reached (as was typical in those engineering experiments) you can have confidence in what the business end will do for you.

All analog components wear recognizable uniforms, with rank usually marked by text or color codes.

When you see the capacitor, you know by its appearance that it's a ceramic capacitor, which tells you something about its voltage limits and temperature limits. The label tells you its capacitance in picofarads. Thus you know its PURPOSE IN LIFE with considerable exactness.

When you see the resistor, you know by appearance that it's a metal-film resistor. The color code tells you it's a 330 ohm resistor with a tolerance or error band of 10%. (Most modern Rs are much closer than the nominal error band, but you're paying for a certain degree of quality control.)

If you need tighter precision or a non-standard value like 359 ohms, you can either do your own quality control ... buy lots of nominal 330s, test them until you find a 359 ... or you can pay a lot for a custom-made R.

IMPORTANT: THERE IS NO WAY TO HACK OR CORRUPT an analog component from a distance. It has no brain that can be propagandized. It will continue to serve its tightly defined little purpose unless it overheats or gets physically busted up. A digital component like a CPU is always incognito. Unmarked. Undercover. Kamikaze. It has no single defined purpose, and it can be subverted to serve any purpose without your knowledge.

= = = = =

The three quantities in previous rant: Money, Power and Morals, also have plugs or uniforms that reveal their purpose in life, when they're functioning properly. Unfortunately these components CAN be hacked, and HAVE BEEN thoroughly hacked by infinitely malicious hyperdemons who run the "enlightened parts" of the world. These three components no longer function properly.

The plug analogy fits Money and Morals, not so well on Power. Maybe I can come up with a better analogy later.

1. Money. In a metal-backed system each banknote is a plug.

The shape and color tell you that a calibrated measure is at the 'business end', and the numbers tell you the value of the fixed measurement at the 'business end'. The 'uniform' also states that a direct wire leads to the 'business end', which was true but tricky. You're not really expected to trace the wire back to Fort Knox. The claim of exchange is meant to prevent people from actually exchanging all their banknotes for silver or gold, but even if they did just that, it wouldn't make a lot of difference. Physical currency is a tiny part of all transactions. Even in the 1880s when real gold and silver coins were active in an (appropriately!) bimetallic system, 95% of all transactions were by check or money order, 4% by paper currency, and less than 1% by actual metal. The proportion of checks (and electronic equivalents) is much larger now.

2. Power. Not a good analogy, but the best I can do. Each side created its plugs by sending spies and agents and propaganda into the other. For an American, Alger Hiss and Roy Cohn and Lee Harvey Oswald were some of the visible yellow plugs. For a Russian, jazz and Gary Powers were visible yellow plugs.

3. Morals. The church was the plug. When you saw this component:

you knew it was a Weigh Station for Morality. Its business end was God. When you walked through the component's door you could expect to see and hear representations of God's Law. The details of the representations told you the calibrated value and the error range. Some components were relatively sloppy, some were highly precise. After you became a regular user of the Weigh Station, you could also expect assistance in calibrating and adjusting your own Moral Weight.

= = = = =

**Footnote on (appropriately!) bimetallic: Bimetallism was a peculiar political rallying cry of Populists in the 1880s. It wasn't a workable system and wouldn't have solved any problems, but it was something to shout about. The equivalent in modern political currency is Flat Tax. I was just making a dumb pun on the basic construction of a thermocouple, but it raises a non-dumb possibility. In a money system with actual bimetallic coins, each coin could create its own little bit of real value. A stack of coins in your hot little 90-degree fingers would give a usable voltage, similar to the old Heatable Battery!

Nature is hard. Math is easy. 1

Thinking about modernity in terms of metrology.

Illustrate with three basic quantities.

= = = = =

1. Money. When dollars were measured against the (comparatively) fixed quantity of gold, capitalists and workers shared the same yardstick. Capitalists understood that the way to have more money was to generate more value through labor. The Chosen couldn't simply define a trillion dollars. They could try to steal a trillion from the workers, but the workers didn't have a trillion to spare. They could (and often did) try to create more value by whipping and starving the workers, but that didn't last. Workers died, and then other workers revolted. So the Chosen had to persuade workers to create more value by paying them and treating them decently.

After the static measuring stick of gold was yanked away in 1971, the Chosen realized that money is pure math if you own the definition machine. Now they could simply define as many trillions as they wanted. And since they want infinite trillions, they are well on the way to defining infinite trillions. No need to pay workers or create real value.

= = = = =

2. Power. When USSR was counterbalancing US, both sides were pushing back and forth along a shared static yardstick. Each side knew that it could only advance a few inches, because the other side was watching the same stick.

When USSR disappeared in 1990, the measuring stick rotted away. US felt able to roar ahead, invading every country that insulted Our Prophet Netanyahu. Imperial delusions always work for a little while, but "there is always some leveling circumstance that puts down the overbearing." USSR finally rises to restore the balance.

= = = = =

3. Morality. When churches served as instruments of the static measuring scale of Natural Law, people had an easy way to measure their morality. The church gave us a chance to check our moral weight against the standard, and attempted to feed or exercise us if we were too far off the beam in either direction. We instinctively understand that MORALITY IS ANOTHER NAME FOR SURVIVAL, so we found this measuring and adjusting service worth paying for.

Now that God's static measure is gone, leaving only the light-speed dynamics of Satan, there's nothing to measure against, so we don't need to pay for the service.

  Pretty good rule

We don't do death sentences any more, not properly anyway. But we still do the opposite.

If you name your girl baby after a season or a month or a virtue ... especially if you misspell the season or month or virtue ... you've guaranteed a life of crime. It's a birth sentence.

Mugshots are full of Autum and Chasity and Desiny.

Good example in today's news:
The man in the video was cooperative with the loss-prevention officers. Responding deputies later charged him with Robbery 2nd Degree and Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana. He said he didn't know the woman, except that she was named "June." He believes she is 45-years-old.
Birth sentence.

  Why do they pay?

Via RCR, an article titled The Francis-Trump Populist Nexus.

Author is trying to draw a parallel between Antichrist Francine and Trump based on the strange notion that both are "populists."

Trump fits well enough, certainly better than any other major politician. He emphasizes borders and culture and tariffs, and says rich people should pay taxes. He misses the Populist boat when he advocates war on countries that didn't attack us.

Antichrist Francine is the exact opposite of Populist. She hates borders, loves the rich, and hates morality. Every action she takes is intended to kill the poor and enrich the rich.

How does a concept like this get published? Obviously the author has never bothered to look up the word Populist or understand its implications.

I might try to horn in on the same editorial sloppiness by writing an article about Sport, where my ignorance and stupidity are total. I might write "The Tyson-Tebow Stretchist Nexus", arguing that Tebow and Tyson are both good examples of Seventh Inning Stretchism.

Obviously this article would be raw looniness from start to finish. I didn't bother to look up the Seventh Inning Stretch. I only know it's a phrase that Sport People say sometimes. I don't know how Tyson and Tebow are connected. I've seen news items about these two guys, so I think Tyson is a Boxist who bites ears and Tebow is a Footballist who prays a lot. Both assumptions are probably wrong.

Could I get paid for such a mishmash of word salad? Of course not, and I wouldn't even think of expecting payment.

Why do editors pay for similar mishmash on other subjects? I dunno.

  Odd Sony logo

Skimming through a 1962 Greek movie.

I halted in the initial credits at this surprising frame:

That's not the normal Sony logo, and I didn't realize Sony was known outside of Japan in '62!

Sony's own history page indicates that the brand name was created in 1955 and started spreading outside Japan around 1958. There was a brief usage of a more Jap-looking logo, but the familiar broad Times Roman logo has been used since '57.

The Greek title page, to the extent I can halfway translate it, is crediting something called Radex for recording the dialog and music. Radex visually points to Sony. Google doesn't find a recorder called Radex but does find a recording studio called Radex. Doesn't seem likely.

  Easy cipher

An easily readable bit of cipher from DC:
The J______ Department issued a new policy Wednesday that made the prosecution of Wall Street executives involved in financial fraud a major priority, all but acknowledging nagging criticism that powerful corporate figures have escaped criminal charges in favor of giant monetary penalties.
Deciphered: "I smell a Hindoo in the woodpile." Time for some ethnic cleansing. Time to pick off those Goys who were strategically placed around the outside of the herd.

  Exception? Probably not.

We need more quitters. We need to break out of the idiotic

syndrome.

After a completely avoidable disaster, everyone shouts:

By god, we're not going to let common sense and logic stop us!

We're going to rebuild that skyscraper even taller so it's a better target!

We're going to keep on holding the Marathon exactly as before, except of course that all the runners will be armor-plated and shackled to Secret Service Agents. More fun that way.

We're going to build even deeper in that flood plain!

We're going to build even closer to that cliff!

We're going to build right back into that forest, only this time we'll build our houses from MATCHES and FIRECRACKERS instead of wood!

I'm going to buy MORE stocks now that my previous stocks have dropped to zero!

I'm going to stick my remaining arm-stub right back into that fucking shark's mouth!

I'm going right back to working for Satan! I'll show him who's boss!

We're going to bomb even more countries that are already flooding us with refugees!

By god, we're EXCEPTIONAL!

Headline: Pilot Who Saved Burning British Airways Flight in Las Vegas: 'I'm Finished Flying'

"It's safe to say I'm finished flying," Chris Henkey told NBC News Wednesday by phone from a hotel in Las Vegas, where he was waiting to brief investigators.

Okay, so he was about ready to retire anyway, but at least he didn't decide to go on flying for 99999999 more years now that he's proved just how ready he was.

Grasping at straws here.

  No, it's not a victory.

Latest.
U.S. District Judge[sic] David Bunning released Davis from jail Tuesday on the condition that she does not interfere with her deputies issuing the licenses. Bunning said he was satisfied that the Rowan County Clerk’s Office would comply with his order.
Davis's supporters are treating this as a victory. Sheer nonsense. It's pure surrender, pure defeat.

There are only two choices.

(1) Work for Satan and obey Satan totally.

(2) Don't work for Satan.

The supporters seem to be imagining that a third choice exists:

(x) Work for Satan "inside the system", in an effort to reform Satan.

This choice does not exist. You will not reform Satan. You will eat Satan's shit.

At the moment choice (2) is easy enough. Most jobs are still neutral, not requiring God vs Satan decisions. This set will decrease FAST. Pay attention.

DAY 7 OF THE FINAL PURGE.

Sidethought a bit later: Though it's not quite obvious, the same logic applies to other aspects of the current battle. Consider the stock market, which has no apparent religious flavor. Lots of anti-Wall-Streeters think they can beat the elites by various charting techniques.

Nope. If your money is moving through the market, you are helping the evil bubble to stay inflated. You are feeding the elite's longs and shorts, and Goldman will always win those trades in the end. Goldman has the information because Goldman makes the information. Worse, you are absorbing the attitudes of the elite even while supposedly fighting the elite. The only way to bring down Satan is to remove your talents from Satan's jobs and remove your money from Satan's markets. It doesn't feel like fighting but it's the least harmful choice. Anything you do "inside the system" is feeding the system at the expense of your soul.

  Learning

Well, if nothing else, those charter-school kids are learning an extremely valuable lesson.

Law does not exist. Rules do not exist. Civic structures are fiction. Only brute force exists. If you are on the Correct Side of brute force, you get what you want. If you are not on the Correct Side, you get dead.

In this case the Correct Side is the Union Thug Side.

Union Thug teachers are free to strike, even though strikes are nominally "illegal" according to the fictions written under the obsolete title of "laws". Non-union schools are not free to operate, even though the referendum that created them was nominally "legal" according to the fictions written under the obsolete title of "laws".

Union Thug says strikes are legal. Therefore strikes are legal.

Union Thug says charters are illegal. Therefore charters are illegal.

Will the alleged "legislature" do anything to fix the situation? No. I don't need to guess.

But again I have to give kudos to the local media for covering this fairly and evenly. Normally the media follow Correct Line.

  Rustic or Rustle?

I finally bought and downloaded an old map of Spokane. The free online views were just enough to be tantalizing but not enough to settle some questions. Both questions turn out to be similarly-formed errors by the mapmaker. A 1912 version of DYAC.

First, an odd one. Serpy Avenue! This may never have been a drivable street; it was inside the old useful industrial riverside that was torn out and replaced by green useless shit to satisfy Comrade Nixon's Gaian vision for Expo 74. I wish someone had re-used the wonderful name. It really belongs on a twisty turny street, not a simple straight block.

Checking: The 1930s map bundled with the 1940 Census shows this as Ferry St, which makes complete sense for the riverfront location. Serpy must be a misread of partly-erased Ferry. You can see the top bit of the F that turned into S. It's still a wonderful name. You can't say it without smiling.

= = = = =

The map shows a whole shitload of urban-looking subdivisions west of the river. Very few of those plats ever got built. The land was too vertical for proper development, and the river was too hard to bridge. At the north end of this segment is the imaginary Chautauqua Park, which is roughly under TJ Meenach Bridge now. Chautauqua Park did serve one purpose: it created some street names that carried on into real developments.

One of those names was Rustic. Or so this mapmaker thought. He carried Rustic up into my neighborhood:

This was a puzzle because the street is currently named Rustle. I thought at first that Rustle was the mistaken version, preserved through the years, because Rustic seems like a more natural street name.

But the hi-res version of the map solves the puzzle.

By comparing with other letters you can see that the original name in the imaginary Chautauqua Park WAS Rustle. The big letters for Chautauqua Park partly obscured TLE, leading the cartographer to decide that it must be the 'more natural' Rustic.

UKTelegraph is cheering self-driving cars and simultaneously blasting Repooflican candidates for owning guns.

As usual among "journalists", exactly backwards.

The old NRA slogan "Guns don't kill people, people kill people" applies correctly to guns, and also to normal autos and most other tools.

A gun or car or hammer or knife or screwdriver or weed-wacker can be a weapon... but only when used with specific deadly intention.

The slogan does NOT apply to autonomous cars. These weapons do kill people on their own, without any human intention.

Hold on. This seems complicated and subtle. Something is missing.

After thinking and walking about it, I formed a chain of reasoning:

What about a mousetrap? When I cock a trap and leave it in a mouseroad, I've created an autonomous weapon. It's programmed to detect a mouse (of below-median intelligence) and kill it.

What about a humantrap? When a store owner gets tired of thefts and sets up a shotgun with a tripwire, he has created an autonomous weapon. It's programmed to detect a thief (ditto) and kill him.

What about a landmine?

Aha. Now the correct dividing line emerges.

Mousetraps and tripwires are SELF-DEFENSE weapons. Landmines are NOT self-defense weapons. Landmines are placed on property that you don't own, and they're not protecting your own body or family.

Self-driving cars are mobile landmines. They are sent out to wander the roads, killing totally innocent pedestrians as a desired side-effect of unnecessary luxury.

Basically a Non-Virtual Reality Entertainment Experience for passive sadists.

  Credit where credit is due

News of infinite evil:
Two charter schools in Spokane will resume school on Tuesday despite the Washington State Supreme Court[sic]'s ruling. “We've been working with folks across the state, the Washington State Charter School Association and some of our other advocates and allies to determine what's our next step,” said Travis Franklin, head of school at Spokane International Academy.

On Friday, a 6-3 vote[sic] decided that funding charter schools with public money is unconstitutional[sic] because it takes from common schools. So now, charter schools in Washington, including SIA and Pride Prep are left wondering how they'll continue to operate.

“I was devastated,” Sarah Brown, mother of a kindergartner at SIA. “Could we lose our school? Is he going to finish out the year?”
Credit to the media for noticing that this is an actual problem for 1200 local kids, who expected to have a school year and now are marooned in a grotesque limbo. Normally the media would automatically take Satan's side.

Needless to say, Satan is roaring and screeching and spinning green toxin in putrid victory:

Meanwhile, the Washington Education Association is applauding the court's decision. They released a statement on Friday after the ruling. "The Supreme Court has affirmed what we've said all along - charter schools steal money from our existing classrooms, and voters have no say in how these charter schools spend taxpayer funding," [Satan dba] Kim Mead wrote.

Only the alleged nasty filthy vile so-called quote "governor" unquote, Satan dba Inslee, is in a position to solve it. And he/she has no fucking reason to solve it, because Satan is victorious. Hey, no problemo, dude. We've ruined 1200 ordinary families, and we've monstrously enriched and empowered the rich and powerful. All is perfect in this most perfect of perfect universes.

  Even Satan doesn't like whiners

One of my father's jokes, used when I was bitching about some First World Problem:

"Doctor! Doctor! My little finger was shot off in the battle!"

"Stop crying, soldier. See that private over there? His head was shot off in the battle, and he's not complaining."

Writing it now, I suddenly suspect 'little finger' was a family-friendly edit. My father made similar edits in songs like Barnacle Bill. Nevertheless, the joke is still a good response to First World Whining.

Europe is FWW about the 'little finger' of a half million Arab migrants, DISTRIBUTED AMONG 20 COUNTRIES.

Turkey has been housing, feeding and educating THREE MILLION Syrian refugees, and he's not complaining.

The distinction is especially grinding because US/UK/EU STARTED THESE WARS, while Turkey didn't even participate until just a few weeks ago.

But how about Syria's nearest neighbor Israel, you might ask? Well, of course Israel is not taking ANY refugees. Instead, Israel is building walls. But I thought walls were bizarre and goofball ideas? No, that's only for walls built by unIsrael. When Israel builds walls they are Necessary and Ethical.

Is anyone considering the possibility of urging Israel to accept some refugees from the FUCKING WAR THAT IT STARTED? No, no, no, of course not. What a bizarre and goofball notion. Why do you even ask? Israel is the Law Producer For The World. All other countries are Law Consumers. Israel creates all Laws, all Wars, all Ethics. Israel receives all Money in return for its most Nobel and most Moral and most Ethical leadership. Others bend over and obey.

This is the stat I was looking for!

Not entirely but close enough. I've noticed for a long time that my direct 'viewports' into the 1930s showed a less disastrous picture than the conventional story. My ancestors got through the Depression without starving or losing their houses. 1940 census data, in cities that I know well, also showed a less dramatic picture.

Here's part of the reason:

Note the rightmost column, income in 1932 as a percent of 1929. One of my grandpas worked for Detroit Edison (Electric light and power and gas) and the other was a school janitor (Government). They were in the least damaged parts of the economy.

The same book also answers the other half of the question, though not in simple tabular form. Oklahoma depended mainly on cattle and oil. Cattle production didn't drop at all from '29 to '32. Petroleum lost 22%, but the industries typical of the Northeast lost around 70%. So Okla wasn't hurt as badly as the states where media and historians live.

Incidentally, the href'd book is valuable for an odd reason. It's a 10-year collection of newsletters from the National Bureau of Economic Research from 1922 to 1933. Packed with useful and readable info about those years. But how did a book published in 1933 make it past the grasping claws of Steamboat Willie? Because it wasn't exactly published. It appears to have been assembled by a librarian, without a title page to show copyright or publication date. The first page is simply the first newsletter, dated 1922. Just outside Steamboat's well-guarded border.

  Intramural exchange

Still looking for old econ stats. Still didn't find what I was looking for, but bumped into this 1772 book on bookkeeping methods.

Bringing text out of the image and modernizing a bit:

In the plantations they reckon their monies and keep their accompts the same way as they do in Britain. But their money is of far less value; for bills upon London, from any of the Caribee islands, are usually charged with 25 per cent in favour of London. That is, if St Christophers of Montserat should draw £100 upon London, the merchants of London charge the drawer with £125 for the said £100. And for Jamaica, Virginia, Maryland, Pensilvania, New England &c the difference is commonly greater. ... London exchanges with the other towns of Great-Britain for a small percent in favor of London.

Seems peculiar to have an exchange rate within one currency, but in fact we do the same thing to Alaska and Hawaii without recognizing it explicitly. Prices and wages in Hawaii are 30% higher than mainland.

Lesson: Greece doesn't need to have its own separate currency to achieve some degree of decoupling from Germany. It could use a Euro with a different value. Banks routinely handled such intramural adjustments in 1772, long before adding machines or computers made numbers easy. There's no TECHNICAL barrier to this technique.

Interesting that this 1772 author didn't separate out the colonies that were preparing to rebel against London's economic treatment. He sees Jamaica, Virginia, Maryland, Pensilvania, New England &c as belonging to the same category. Must have been a serious surprise when some of those discounted Plantations took up arms against London. Jamaica never revolted violently, and even after its fairly recent independence would rather return to colonial status. Sensible people. They understand that revolution makes things worse!

  As always

I can't think of a good pat phrase for doing the wrong thing for all the wrong reasons but coming out right despite your best efforts. It's not a stopped clock; that's just doing the same thing forever for no reason at all. Lots of comedy is based on this premise, but it isn't anyone's particular trademark.

At any rate, here's an excellent example.
Washington Corrections Center is starting a new program that will bring nature videos to maximum custody inmates who spend 23 hours a day alone in their cell. In the coming weeks, these prisoners - which include the most dangerous and unruly of the overall prison population - will have the option of watching sunsets, mountains and river vistas projected on a blank recreation room wall that they are allowed to go to during their hour out of their cells. The hope is that by offering these scenes, inmates will be calmer. .... Based on a similar setup in an Oregon prison that has seen some success with prisoners.

Prison officials are operating on the usual pile of leftist lies. Everyone is identical passive grains of sand. We enjoy watching PBS; pro criminals are just like us; therefore pro criminals enjoy it as well.

Crap. If the technique works, it's NOT because it "makes the criminals calmer". It simply turns solitary into a perfect Room 101 for pro criminals. After you spend one minute watching "sunsets, mountains and river vistas", you'll NEVER want to get into that hellish place again.

Basic Skinner.

As always, it's supremely ironic that the dickheads who claim to worship Skinner, Darwin, Freud, Keynes, and Laffer consistently violate every precept laid down by their alleged Prophets.

Later thought: Wash and Ore officials are perfectly stupid, but whoever designed the technique may have been smart. It's the visual version of speakers blaring Vivaldi or Debussy or The Carpenters in downtown skater hangouts. Guaranteed teen repellent, and nobody is confused about why it works.

  What's different?

While looking for old economic stats, I ran across this remarkably detailed story in an 1890 Bankers Magazine.

Sounds pretty much the same as modern manipulation. (1) Buy a packet of laws with complex and secret provisions. (2) Frontrun the laws with shorts and longs. (3) Profit enormously from the bailout.

What's DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT? The FACT that this detailed story APPEARED IN A PUBLICATION. The whole story was TOLD TO THE PUBLIC BY JOURNALISTS, who actually CRITICIZED the Wall Street speculators!

Can't happen today. We still have NO FUCKING IDEA what happened in 2008, though it smells a lot like this story. Nobody has even ASKED THE FUCKING QUESTION, nobody dares to CRITICIZE the speculators.

  Thanks, Ralph 12

Continuing to clear out internal cobwebs.

Should I be defending Kim Davis for trying to stay in office?

EMOTIONALLY, yes. She SHOULDN'T be required to violate her conscience.

PRACTICALLY, no. In all other situations I've decided that careerism is the main problem. "Working within the system" doesn't work. In Soviet America system works you.

What about the old CP Snow rule? Be There.

This still applies to details and numbers. If you're present and active in a meeting, you can generally pull a design or a budget toward your desired direction.

It doesn't apply to an absolute tyranny requiring you to commit evil. In that case you should deprive the tyranny of your talents. GET OUT FAST.

Emerson again. Purges are ultimately stupid, and ultimately lead to the collapse of the purger. When a purger forces competent and experienced people out of jobs, he loses competence and experience. He ends up hiring brainless thugs whose sole qualification is loyalty to evil.

When you fight, you give Satan an excuse to escalate his firepower. When you leave quietly, Satan has to waste time and money hiring and training an inexperienced replacement.

We should speed the collapse instead of enlarging the war.

  Moment of clarity 2

I was initially fooled by the 'Arab Spring' thing as reported. After facts and results started to come out, I was no longer fooled.

Problem: I SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN FOOLED. Even without the facts and results, I already understood that regime changes and revolutions usually make things worse. But there were enough apparent exceptions that I allowed hope to triumph over experience. Several Eastern Europe countries are unquestionably better after Soviet rule ended. Others are about the same, a few are worse.

Question: Is there a reliable pattern? A way to predict WHICH regime changes are more likely to make things worse?

Answer:

Revolutions normally make things worse.

Restorations normally make things better.

In places like Poland and Czechia, the pre-Soviet government was not just 'comparatively decent'; it was GOOD. Sovietism was imposed externally by an occupying force. When it was removed, the pre-existing tradition and culture flowed back into power. This was a restoration, not a revolution.

  Niceness isn't always possible

Russia is moving military forces into Syria to defend Assad.

This is interesting in two ways:

(1) It's the first Russian military action outside of Russia's traditional empire since the Switchover. Russia has been defending its own traditional territory against Chechen rebels and NudelmanPyatt War Partners LLC, but has avoided the external stuff. This move will deprive Russia of a certain level of moral purity, and bring it back into Superpower status.

(2) It's a demonstration of simple logic and competence.

US/UK/EU have been giving weapons and support to various rebel forces while publicly bemoaning the outrages committed by the rebel forces. At first we tried to blame Assad for outrages, but that failed.

Latest example of idiocy:
Britain should "crush" Isil by taking part in military action in Syria, a former Archbishop of Canterbury suggests today amid mounting calls for further air strikes. In an article for The Telegraph, Lord Carey says that it is "not enough" to send aid to Syria and admit thousands of refugees to this country. He argues that Isil needs to be dealt with "for once and for all" and that "air strikes and other British military assistance" may be needed in Syria.
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING, and the result is EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT. Total chaos, mass death, and invaders to help destroy your own civilization. All part of the plan.

Now Russia is trying to END THE WAR, and you hate it. You want INFINITE WAR and TOTAL DEATH. (Except, of course, for The Chosen.)

Simple logic: Before Israel ordered USA STRONG to start this war, Assad was a decent enough ruler by local standards. He kept things calm, which allowed the various religious factions to live normal lives. Keeping things calm required occasional harshness, but that's better than total chaos.

It's not clear that Assad can simply resume power after the war is halted, but by now the rebel side is completely exhausted.

  A rhyme

Polistra observes a repetition of ignorance on a simple subject. Every time we get blessedly necessary rain after a long dry spell, we also get a certain number of popped transformers. Despite this predictability, lots of people are completely puzzled every time it happens. Avista has to jump into social media to explain it over and over.

Time for a rhyme.

Short poems are useful as memory aids.

Leaves of three, let it be.

Red sky at morning, sailors take warning.

I before E except after C.

White flies swarming, no more warming. (Polistra's earlier effort.)

For this purpose:

Rain after dust, Power goes bust.

= = = = =

Sidenote: The worst of all such rhymes was hammered by a high-school English teacher.

Is! Are! Was! Were! Never takes an Ob! Ject!
Is! Are! Was! Were! Never takes an Ob! Ject!
Is! Are! Was! Were! Never takes an Ob! Ject!

The rhyme was basically meant to prevent "It's me." The rhyme was wrong. "It's me" is perfectly fine. Beyond wrongness the rhyme was also moot and defective. Moot because anyone who understands the concept of takes an object already knows the bad rule; defective because there aren't any situations where Are! and Were! come in front of a pronoun. It are us? It were him? Nobody says those things, so they don't need to be falsely "corrected".

  Moment of clarity

A moment of clarity on leftist hatred of science vs non-leftist hatred of science.

There's really nothing confusing or contradictory.

The term science is overbroad and sloppy. It probably deserves to be phased out, just as 'natural philosophy' was phased out when science specialized away from it.

Science commonly includes theories, inventions, improved technologies, and improved materials.

All real advances since 1920 have come from the improvement side. Materials and manufacturing and medicine and agriculture. Except for the laser, nothing truly new has been invented since 1920. All theories since 1920 have been lunatic and lethal.

The science that leftists hate is entirely in the techniques and improvements category. Medicine, agriculture, materials.

The science that non-leftists hate is entirely in the theory category. "Global Warming", evolution, economics, quantum shit, cosmology, "social" "science".

Nobody loves or hates all of science, because science simply isn't a valid category.

We can live without theories. In fact we live VASTLY BETTER without theories, nearly all of which are genocidal.

We can't live without improvements in materials and plants and medicine.

The Washington Supreme Court [sic] has ruled the state's voter-approved charter-school law unconstitutional [sic]. In a 6-3 ruling issued late Friday afternoon, the high court [sic] said that charter schools do not qualify as common, public schools and cannot receive public funding.
This lethal terrorist act comes AFTER charter schools have spent a year forming and organizing, and already started this school year.

WHERE WILL THE KIDS GO AFTER THE CHARTERS SHUT DOWN ABRUPTLY?

  Really dumb.

Some fool, or possibly some AP, created a problem that didn't need to be created.

Old lesson. Learned over and over.

You can't stop a tyranny by protests or acts of vandalism. Visible resistance only strengthens the tyrant and turns his vicious vile infinite evil against MORE innocent people.

Patience. Patience.

Withdraw your consent. Don't participate, don't help, don't create problems.

Tyrannies collapse when nobody feels like working for them. Wars stop when nobody feels like fighting. This particular tyranny is already collapsing on many fronts, without any help. Stand back, watch and enjoy.

  Pole puzzle

Avista is mounting these shield things on some poles. Judging by height and gauge, the shields would be good protection against a car.

Trouble with the car hypothesis: All of the shields (so far, anyway) are on the NORTH side of poles. Doesn't matter which way the street is going or which way the cars are going. Always the NORTH side. So the shields could only help 1/4 of the poles.

The shape doesn't make sense for wind; it only encourages the break to happen at ground level. Also, the worst winds always come from WSW, not from S or N.

Total puzzle. I'm undoubtedly missing something. Avista wouldn't spend so much money without a proper purpose.

= = = = =

A bit later: Maybe the shield actually extends down into the ground. If so, it could be a 'substitute' for rotten wood. Not sure it's a good idea. A similar 'substitute' on my fence didn't work. The angle iron (Bad Brace) extends down into the ground about one foot. These were installed in 2004 and didn't really make any difference. Later in 2011 I finally had the fence braced properly (Good Brace). These long bars extend down into a heavy concrete cylinder. Since then the fence has remained absolutely vertical, even through last year's 75-mph gustnado.

= = = = =

And still later after closer observation: (1) Not all are Northward. The shields near Wellesley all face North, and the shields near NW Blvd all face West. Seems to be a matter of crew habit. (2) The shields DO extend down into the ground, so the rotten-substitution idea is clearly the solution.

Corrected picture:

Much later: It's an old idea. From 1920 Electric Traction Review:

  New SES

Polistra always looks for Self-Explanatory Sentences. Pickings have been exceedingly slim lately, until this popped up.

The most perfect Self-Explanatory Sentence ever!

Tara Monroe, 20, a junior studying industrial engineering, said her license was suspended and her father took her car away after she refused a Breathalyzer test during a DWI stop following a Waka Flocka Flame concert.

An entire life in 36 words.

"Riding a bike around campus sucks. Like really sucks." Monroe's solution came in the form of a $60 electric Barbie Jeep she found for sale on Craigslist.

Note that walking was not among the Options On The Table. Walking is so like sucky that it's like not even like thinkable.

"Basically, it was the best decision I've made in college, yet."

In a strict sense she's exactly right. Not the best decision in terms of living a better life; she obviously zoomed past the offramp for that goal a long time ago. No chance of backing up and taking it. But in terms of gains available from the college experience she's got it. Publicity, connections, fame, and (dead serious now) CREATING A SOLUTION TO A PROBLEM instead of creating new forms of tyranny. Even in terms of her alleged major of industrial engineering, a Barbie Jeep is much more time-efficient than biking or walking.

She's only missed one important thing. A real engineer would have souped up the Jeep to do 0-60 in 3.9 seconds while avoiding obstacles and automatically seeking the nearest bar.

= = = = =

Separate thought after noticing news item about meth head riding a bike and swinging a hammer at people. Drunks and methies ride bikes for the same reason as Tara: suspended license. Maybe Tara is right in seeing bikes as sucky. Solution to both problems: Require methies and drunks to drive hot pink Barbie Jeeps instead of bicycles. Require the BJ to emit music using ice cream truck technology. Perhaps a medley of peppy numbers like "Feeeeeeeeliiiiingggs" and "Over the Rainbow." You can't do nearly as much damage from that position, and everyone will know what you are. Bikes will still suffer from the riders at the other end of the spectrum, the arrogant million-dollar Spandex assholes, but maybe a more normal range of users can emerge with the drunks gone.

  New! New! New!

Brand new! Never done before!
Electrical engineers at the University of California, San Diego demonstrated a new wireless communication technique that works by sending magnetic signals through the human body. The new technology could offer a lower power and more secure way to communicate information between wearable electronic devices, providing an improved alternative to existing wireless communication systems, researchers said. They presented their findings Aug. 26 at the 37th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society in Milan, Italy.

While this work is still a proof-of-concept demonstration, researchers envision developing it into an ultra low power wireless system that can easily transmit information around the human body. An application of this technology would be a wireless sensor network for full-body health monitoring.
Opposite of new. It's the oldest (human) version of the concept of radio or wireless. Primary and secondary windings of a transformer, separated by a few inches. Faraday, 1832.

The false claim of novelty doesn't mean it's a bad idea. Obviously it's cleaner and more private to communicate pulses and waves DIRECTLY to a device like a pacemaker or injector pump, instead of sending the signal out through a wildly complex and PUBLIC wi-fi network.

The real question is why anyone ever wanted to use the latter method when this obvious direct method was available. Answer is a no-brainer. Apple wanted to use PUBLIC communication because their whole purpose is mass surveillance.

Obviously we don't learn anything from history. But if we try to imagine a peculiar alternate world where we do learn from history, the best learning exercise would be a question that never gets asked.

In sane times we did ask one easy question about wars. We asked this during WW2 and got the correct answer.

Easy question: Who started it? If I started a war against you, I'm the guilty party and I deserve to be obliterated. If you started a war against me, I need to obliterate you.

WW2 was fought on this basis.

Since WW2 we've never asked any questions at all. We just attack everyone except Israel and Saudi, and we pretend to be puzzled and offended when the attacked countries try to defend themselves. We deserve to be obliterated.

Even in comparatively sane times, we didn't ask a harder question that could lead to real learning.

Hard question: Who DIDN'T start a war? Who grabbed the wheel? Who hit the EMERGENCY STOP button? Who saved millions of lives that were automatically "scheduled" for death?

There are undoubtedly several good answers. One that comes to mind from my limited factual knowledge is Eisenhower in 1956. The defense establishment wanted us to attack Russia because Russia was treating its occupied countries harshly. We were also treating our occupied countries harshly, but that's OK because everything we do is OK by definition.

Ike said no, thus saving lots of lives.

Another would be Stanislav Petrov in 1983, who chose not to fire off Russia's ICBMs in response to a real-looking computer failure.

These are the people we can learn from.

[Right about one] > [wrong about all]

The appeal of semi-Populist** types like Trump and Corbyn is simple and easy to understand. In a time and place when all the other leaders are INFINITELY WRONG about MORE THAN EVERYTHING, Trump and Corbyn are RIGHT about ONE OR TWO THINGS. The Establishment still doesn't understand this simple distinction.

Trump and Corbyn's points of rightness are opposite. Trump is right about economics and wrong about war. Corbyn is right about war and wrong about economics. Still, ONE area of clear and precise rightness is just SO DAMN REFRESHING.

Corbyn showed his clear and precise rightness today in a "forum" with the other Labour candidates.
Pushed on whether the UK should bomb targets in Syria to combat Isil, the left-winger said: "The issue would be we bomb, we kill people, we wouldn't destroy or defeat ISIS, we probably make the situation considerably worse. "If that doesn't work the question is would you put boots on the ground? I don't think so."
Exactly. He understands that the current UK/US/EU policy is CREATING refugees, then INVITING them. Bankshot genocide. Destroying your own nation by recruiting foreigners to do the job.

** As always, I'm using Populist in the proper Jennings Bryan sense, not just meaning Loud Talk.

Old dumb metaphor, not so dumb.

Natural law proponents continue to describe Satan's morality as 'relative', meaning 'anything goes'. Misses the point badly and dangerously.

In earlier decades the complaint that 'everything is relative' often tacked on an allusion to Einstein, missing Einstein's point as well. General Relativity does NOT mean Whatever, Dude.

In fact the allusion is accurate, but not in the way it was meant. Einstein did say that things look different depending on your frame. If you are in a moving train, paying no attention to the outside, you can do things like dropping a ball or pouring coffee or waving your hands around. To you, these actions will look and feel absolutely normal. The ball and coffee will move straight downward, and your hands won't feel any 'wind' in one direction. But a watcher in the stationary frame will see your moves PLUS your horizontal motion, and they will look strange.

Satan's rules are the opposite of sloppy and tolerant. His rules are precise and absolute and CONSTANTLY MOVING. This is why they appear blurry or sloppy to an observer in a stationary moral frame, and this is why they appear normal to riders on Satan's train.

Fine example in this week's case of the Kentucky court clerk who lives in a stationary Natural Law frame of reference. She sees clearly that Satan's rules are roaring away from Natural Law. She sees that the "laws" of this former "nation", and even the alleged "president" of this former "nation", agreed with Natural Law on this point, continuously until a few months ago. But Satan's riders don't see the change. Within their frame the CURRENT set of rules is the ONLY possible set of rules. Former conditions do not exist. Result is predictable. Stand in the way of a moving train and you will be squashed. Totally destroyed.

SEPTEMBER 3, 2015 DAY 1 OF THE FINAL PURGE.

QUESTION FOR SLIMY PAPIST FUCKHEADS LIKE SCALIA WHO FRAUDULENTLY CLAIM THAT "LAWS" EXIST.

28 MAJOR CITIES ARE OPENLY AND EXPLICITLY DISOBEYING FEDERAL "LAWS" ON IMMIGRATION. HOW MANY OF THEIR OFFICIALS HAVE BEEN SENT TO JAIL FOR OPENLY AND EXPLICITLY DISOBEYING FEDERAL "LAWS"? ANSWER: ZERO. CONCLUSION: "LAWS" DO NOT EXIST. ONLY SATAN'S RULE EXISTS. SATAN HATES BORDERS, SATAN HATES NORMAL FAMILIES. PUNISHMENT IS GIVEN ACCORDINGLY.

= = = = =

Fussy linguistic footnote: I really shouldn't say 'stationary moral frame' and 'moving moral frame'. The former is redundant, the latter is impossible. Morality is STATIONARY BY DEFINITION. It is the luminiferous ether. It is the accumulated results of 100,000 years of painful experimentation to determine what Nature/God wants. The Old Testament is the lab notebook. Nothing has changed since the notebook was written. We have not 'evolved' in any important way since then, so the rules for SURVIVAL haven't evolved either. MORALITY IS SURVIVAL. Rules that change are NOT MORALITY and NOT SURVIVAL. They are SPECIES SUICIDE.

= = = = =

Snarky acoustic footnote: Listen to Satan's riders. They always end every sentence with a long rising Doppler shift, letting you know that they are moving toward you FAST. Within the train they are unaware of this tendency. Pay attention and get out of the way.

  Well, what do you expect?

NYC papist satans are preparing a huge coronation ceremony for their leader Antichrist Francine:
... church officials say its simple design reflects the pontiff's wishes. The chair has a light brown finish with a darker mahogany trim and a white cushioned seat, back and arms. Cardinal Timothy Dolan said the symbolism of a chair was "very important in Catholic imagination."

"A chair represents unity and a chair represents teaching authority," Dolan said, adding that the pope wanted something simple and wooden without any designs.

The chair was constructed by a group of immigrant day laborers in a garage in Port Chester. The Archdiocese of New York said immigrants were specifically chosen because of Francis' concern over those who are marginalized and for his desire for justice in the world.
I started to roar and growl again then settled down. No point in raising my blood pressure. This is exactly what we expect from Antichrist and Satan.

We expect treason and confusion. We expect breaking down of natural walls to create a Global Cell. We expect Ebola.

"Justice in the world" = Bring in millions of criminals from other countries to destroy civilization HERE.

"Concern for marginalized" = Slap the LOCAL poor people in the face by employing the IMPORTED criminals to starve the LOCAL poor.

Unfortunately this part of Satan's program is widespread among Papists, even among those who seem to dimly perceive the outlines of Natural Law in other areas. This part wasn't new with Antichrist Francine.

I've given up on Papists. If you see Satan taking the CHAIR as your leader and you don't have the sense to RUN FOR YOUR FUCKING LIFE, you are a Satanist by definition.

News, sort of:

Fox News anchor has filed a lawsuit against Hasbro, claiming that a toy hamster produced by the company wrongfully appropriates her name and “distinctive persona.”

If a toy company thinks your "distinctive persona" fits a hamster, perhaps the problem lies in the "distinctive persona", not the toy company.

This connection wouldn't have been noticed if you hadn't brought the lawsuit.

  Excellent idea!

Definitely in the "Why didn't someone think of this before?" category. A small business in Coeur d'Alene is packaging serious fire retardant for home use. It's the same stuff they drop from planes on forest fires, except that it doesn't include the red dye. [The dye is only for convenience, so pilots can tell quickly which areas have already been sprayed.] So far the product is only being sold at one Ace Hardware, but it deserves to spread.

KREM shows a quick but convincing experiment with properly controlled variables. A piece of cardboard, half sprayed and half unsprayed. Lighted with a torch, the untreated part burns and the treated part starts to char. Not absolutely fireproof, but halts the flames.

They include a recommendation from a lady who lives in the 'forest interface'. She probably doesn't need it because she's already taken the proper steps. Metal siding, metal roof, green space. ...... Well, come to think of it, her recommendation is more powerful since she demonstrably understands the danger!

  A lack

According to Bloomberg, "a lack of sufficiently windy days" caused losses in the wind "energy" business this quarter.

Hmm. I wonder if a nuclear plant ever suffers from "a lack of sufficiently fissiony days". I wonder if a coal plant loses money because of "a lack of sufficiently combustiony days".

Haven't heard those complaints because

Uranium will always produce heat by fission. Coal or natural gas will always produce heat by combustion. Those are natural processes you can count on.

You can't count on wind. It's like a cat. It rips your face off when you don't want it, and hides when you want it.

At WSU:
Three Washington State University instructors are being accused of violating students’ First Amendment rights by banning terms such as “illegal alien,” “male” and “female” in the classroom. Students were told they would risk losing points or failing a class if they repeatedly use terms deemed oppressive or hateful in discussions or assignments. The instructors – one professor and two doctorate students in WSU’s Department of Critical Culture, Gender and Race Studies – outlined their policies in course syllabi.

At Whitworth:
Whitworth University issued an apology on Facebook on Tuesday after a photo was posted showing five women’s soccer players wearing afro wigs – including four wearing blackface – in an apparent attempt to appear as members of The Jackson Five for a skit at an informal event at a bowling alley.
Emerson tells us that tyrannical toxic shit tends to be self-limiting. Anyone who graduates from college under these conditions will be totally unsuited for any job except Grand Inquisitor. Openings in that field are limited at present; basically the only opportunities for Grand Inquisitors are in universities and the media.

As the Final Purge advances, the GI employment space will no doubt expand; but that's at least a few weeks in the future.

Meanwhile, employers who want skills other than Grand Inquisitor seem to be catching on. They're increasingly turning to Community Colleges, where actual education still happens occasionally. Parents and students are also waking up and smelling the cyanide. Note how new college enrollments are no longer keeping up with population:

Thanks, Ralph.

  Growling

Extremely convective thought! Neural CAPE = 5000 J/kG.

I was growling at the monstrous antihumans who are designing self-driving cars to serve as weapons for the Final Purge. These Googlemonsters have certainly never driven a car or walked. They always ride in Google Maybach Superstretch Limos or Google Private Gulfstream Hypersonic Superjets. Their delicate bound Googlefeet have never touched rude vulgar pavement. Their Googlebubble of infinite evil is so hermetically sealed that they can actually say:
Dmitri Dolgov, head of software for Google’s Self-Driving Car Project, said that one thing he had learned from the project was that human drivers needed to be “less idiotic.”
I growled: "You've sold your soul to Satan, but he didn't get much in the bargain."

Here the convective thought pops up: Satan is a plankton-feeder. He has to keep vacuuming up souls because the ones that drop into his territory are dessicated and microscopic.

Pointless and mythical thought, but a satisfying image. Old Five Eyes makes a good Satan.

  Now we see.

I was mystified by the Hatton Garden theft earlier this year. It didn't make a lick of sense as burglary. Everything was wrong.

(1) A group of OLD guys. Burglary is strictly a young man's game.

(2) Old guys who had never done a crime before. Burglary is a VOCATION.

(3) Good execution of the Tool Time part, but no thought for fencing or disposing of the loot. EVERYONE KNOWS that exclusive jewelry is totally documented and recorded. This has been true forever, and is even more powerfully true in the age of digital cameras. These old guys couldn't have been ignorant of the facts, but they went ahead anyway.

The job smelled like inside action with a financial purpose. The old guys had to be paid pawns. I thought maybe one of the depositors needed an insurance claim to get out of bankruptcy, but that didn't happen. I was still mystified.

Now we see the inside purpose!
The Hatton Garden safety deposit box company that was raided in a £10 million jewel heist in April has gone into liquidation after its trade dried up. Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Ltd, owned by Sudanese father and son Mahendra and Manish Bavishi, called in liquidators last week after it became insolvent as a result of the damage caused to its reputation by the raid.
Mahendra and Manish Bavishi. Hindoos working in a business reserved for Jews.

Good old ethnic cleansing. Standard procedure.

  Toldja so

Antipope Francine had declared today to be Gaiamas, but apparently didn't put any plans in place. No action is showing in the news.

Instead she decided to roar ahead on another front. I knew this would happen.

Headline: Pope to allow all priests to forgive abortion during Holy Year.

"Pope Francis will give all priests discretion to formally forgive women who have had abortions and seek absolution during the Roman Catholic Church's upcoming Holy Year, in the Argentine pontiff's latest move towards a more open and inclusive church."

= = = = =

There's Step 1. Don't wait very long for Step 2.

Toldja so.

It will be interesting to watch the loyal Pope-cultists continuing to defend Francine as she moves quickly toward complete permission for abortion. They will need all their Jesuit casuistry, especially after the CMP tapes.

Come on, loyalists. You can't be that dumb. You have a church to defend. Start defending it or secede.

  COOL WEATHER!

Cool weather FINALLY arrives, bringing coziness and EIGHT HOURS OF SLEEP. I think the last time I hit 8 hours was back in April.

The house appreciates it as well. During the long SUPERDRY hot spell its floors developed lots of new creaks and groans and clunks. Now that HUMIDITY has returned, its song has returned to the normal set of creaks.
