Niceness isn't always possible
Russia is moving military forces into Syria to defend Assad.
This is interesting in two ways:
(1) It's the first Russian military action
outside of Russia's traditional empire since the Switchover. Russia has been defending its own traditional territory against Chechen rebels and NudelmanPyatt War Partners LLC, but has avoided the external stuff. This move will deprive Russia of a certain level of moral purity, and bring it back into Superpower status.
(2) It's a demonstration of simple logic and competence.
US/UK/EU have been giving weapons and support to various rebel forces while publicly bemoaning the outrages committed by the rebel forces. At first we tried to blame Assad for outrages, but that failed.
Latest example of idiocy:
Britain should "crush" Isil by taking part in military action in Syria, a former Archbishop of Canterbury suggests today amid mounting calls for further air strikes.
In an article for The Telegraph, Lord Carey says that it is "not enough" to send aid to Syria and admit thousands of refugees to this country. He argues that Isil needs to be dealt with "for once and for all" and that "air strikes and other British military assistance" may be needed in Syria.
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING, and the result is
EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT. Total chaos, mass death, and invaders to help destroy your own civilization.
All part of the plan.
Now Russia is trying to END THE WAR, and you hate it. You want INFINITE WAR and TOTAL DEATH. (Except, of course, for The Chosen.)
Simple logic: Before Israel ordered USA STRONG to start this war, Assad was a decent enough ruler by local standards. He kept things calm, which allowed the various religious factions to live normal lives. Keeping things calm required occasional harshness, but that's better than total chaos.
It's not clear that Assad can simply resume power after the war is halted, but by now the rebel side is completely exhausted.
