Possession or patent?
Lots of buzz in religious and ciphery circles about a deciphered letter written by an Italian nun in 1676. The religious articles start from an assumption that she was possessed. The secular articles call her various Freudian labels for crazy, which is just the secular way of saying possessed.
Neither assumption is necessary or justifiable.
Better and simpler: She was developing** a coherent but heretical philosophy, and used her language skills to record her thoughts privately. This was a common trick at the time. Inventors used it to register priority for ideas. Write it down in coded Latin, store the document with a friend or lawyer, pull it out and decode it when needed.
She had studied languages and the cipher shows it. Most of the characters are actual Cyrillic. Her invented symbols have a Cyrillic flavor.
Most interesting to my eyes: A few of the symbols were later used for REAL Cyrillic variants, such as Serbian, developed in 1818. Were these symbols inherent in the mental template of Cyrillic? Or was she writing to other language students, leaving deposits of inventiveness in those circles as well?
None of the articles mention details of the encryption. Was it just a symbol-substitution from Italian? There are a couple words of plain Italian in the small segment pictured with the articles. Or was it a proper cipher with transpositions and Vigenere stuff? Inventors and philosophers tended to use transposition in their provenance provers.

Bad weather, massive plagues, Muslim invasion from the south, idiot princelings fighting each other over sour romances or improperly shaped beards instead of helping their people. Sounds familiar. The unfamiliar part is that Rome was trying to maintain an island of knowledge. Some convents and monasteries were 'think tanks'. Just like the modern version, creativity was encouraged but outright heresy was not.

And a dysglimmer
Way down at the other end of the intelligence scale, parts of Britain are returning to open sewers for ENVIRONMENTALISM.
Rolling the bin is no big deal. Many people leave it by the street, others keep it 20 or 30 feet from the street in the driveway or courtyard.
Under the new super-convenient system you carry your NON-WHEELED bin for 500 or 600 feet to the nearest receptacle, which may already be full, in which case you lug your NON-WHEELED BIN back and try again later. If it's not full you deposit your trash PIECE BY PIECE through the lid of the receptacle. Amazing gain in convenience!
This video from Sotkon, the maker of the system, shows that the receptacles are just big wastebaskets with small openings. It's not actually a sewer as Telegraph stupidly describes it; instead there's a big underground Dumpster in a pit beneath the receptacle, which requires a truck to empty it.
This video from a city in Portugal shows the upper part of the bins more clearly.
Why is this environmental? Less stops by the truck. That's the good part, supposedly. The bad part:
1. Smelly underground bin, guaranteed to attract rats.
2. A good rain, especially if the pit happens to be in a low spot, will fill the pit with water. Now you've got a permanent mess.
3. Can't be emptied or even reached when the pavement is covered with snow and ice. The area around the receptacle will always be greasy in summer and thus incurably slippery in winter, and ice will lock the edges of the pit opening for months. If you get a solid freeze after a rain, you've got a completely busted and unusable pit. Ice expands and breaks concrete.
4. Even in good weather the Dumpster will get full and the city will fail to collect it. Total overflow, no way for residents to take their trash out.
5. Hauling your trash around the block and pulling it out of your own bin piece by piece? You'll get dirty and cut up, and the street will get dirty and stay dirty.
6. With one bin per block, some people will have to cross several streets carrying a trash can to locate the nearest NON-FULL receptacle. Death and injury and liability.
7. Old or disabled people won't be able to handle this heavy labor. The city will end up providing wheelie bins for them, which means the trucks will circulate after all.
8. After seeing how it works, most people will load the trash can in their 400HP SUV and drive around to find the nearest NON-FULL receptacle, thus more than defeating the original idiotic purpose of saving gas.
Maybe there's some magic element that I'm missing, but the videos show the receptacles pretty clearly. I don't see how you get your crap into them if not piece by piece and sack by sack.

American Radio History has added a few issues of a strange BBC program guide from the 30s.
Most radio stations issued monthly program guides, with a mix of 'behind the scenes' and 'personality profiles' to keep you closely linked to the station. Because the guide was basically advertising FOR the station, it didn't carry other advertising.
BBC's guide was an exception. BBC itself operated by forcible subscription, so you'd think the program guide would be covered by the price you were forced to pay. Nope, the guide added insult to injury with dense advertising.

An earlier less toxic form of globalism. Each module pulls power from sun and rain and does its own thing. Some grow wheat, some grow cattle, some cut logs, some mine iron, some turn the logs and iron into machines. Only processed product is transferred between stages. Borders insure that no direct migration can pull each stage out of its preferred operating conditions.

Often the restoration leaves the disruptor technically "unjudged", but the important goal is the equilibrium, NOT the technical statement of guilt.

Why isn't this common?
Looking at the picture in previous item, I was struck by a random neuron firing.
Why aren't more houses equipped with short and solid awnings like this?
It wouldn't be needed on this particular bungalow with a nice wide roof overhang, but it would be helpful on Cods or newer ranchy types.
The usual aluminum awning does a good job of sunshielding, but it also collapses under snowload and blows off in a windstorm.
This mini-awning would be a compromise. It would protect the window from most rain, and would block the worst of noontime sun without blocking low winter sun. It wouldn't hold snow or catch wind. If it's built as a solid or hollow piece of fiberglass, it wouldn't encourage wasps.

Nature doesn't do honesty. Every smart and surviving critter uses deception, looking or smelling or sounding or moving like something else. Honesty is death.
The dividing line CANNOT BE deception vs honesty because honesty DOES NOT EXIST.
The only meaningful measure is the PURPOSE of the deception. Aggressive or defensive? Helpful or harmful?
When a deception is aggressive or harmful, you need to break it down and observe** the underlying reality so you can defend yourself against the aggression, or at least stop HELPING the aggressor. Stings and false flags by Sorosian governments are lethal and aggressive. We need to observe basic facts. 9/11 was a Saudi + CIA operation. Both "fascists" and "anti-fascists" are organized by the government as traps. Knowing these FACTS can slow down the aggression by depriving it of active support.
When a deception is neutral or helpful, we should quietly realize it's a deception while still allowing it to function. Good medical practice, good selling, and good religion, all involve a lot of magic and placebo. When we criminalize "alternative" medicine we're not giving the magic a chance to work. Over the centuries our criminalizing of various therapies has switched back and forth wildly, often depriving entire generations of a therapy that we later "rediscover" as useful. We'd save thousands of lives if we just LOOSENED UP.
Smart and surviving cultures were never fooled by the Enlightenment nonsense. Persians and Russians and Chinese understand reality more clearly. Teutons and Anglos and French fell into the binary trap around 1790 and never climbed out. Now it's killing us.

Everybody bashes Henry Ford for his ethnic preferences, but Henry didn't sabotage the cars he sold to the group he disliked. He sold the same T to everyone.
A more precise comparison: VW suffered the same bashing for the same association. Early bugs had a 'reserve tank' instead of a gas gauge. Four displacements
Four phenomena, listed in ascending order of seriousness, all growing in prevalence on the Sorosian side of the world:
1. Suicide by cop. Conflicted individual gets the cops to do the shooting.
2. Hate hoaxes. Conflicted individual, packed with cognitive dissonance by Soros, develops a fake death threat against herself, designed to attribute blame to the Current Cultural Enemy.
3. Stings by FBI and CIA. Conflicted nation develops fake "crimes" against itself, designed to attribute blame to the Current Criminal Enemy or Current "Terrorist" Enemy.
4. 9/11 and other Lusitanias. Conflicted nation, packed with cognitive dissonance by Soros, creates fake "acts of war" against itself, designed to attribute blame to the Current National or "Terrorist" Enemy.
The first one is not necessarily inspired by Soros, but it's part of the same pattern. Cops are unquestionably on the Soros Current Enemies List.

Clever and useful idea
The best part of the Web is the rare moments when a commenter who KNOWS HIS WORK also SHOWS HIS WORK. Usually people who are part of the system stick with the standard line of the system, and people who aren't insiders have to make wild guesses.
In this article about the Sorosian Bishops supporting the invasion of migrant criminals, the commenters get into the usual pointless ideological quibbles.... until one man who was the business manager of a church tells us how the system works.
Again, a cathedraticum is a fixed percentage of general collections. In the parish where I was business manager, it was 6% each month. So if the parish took in $10,000, it was $600. If it took in only $1,000, it was $60. It wasn't crippling; and if you had a bad month, the hit was correspondingly reduced. Parishes get closed when they can't get the regular bills paid, or there are no longer enough priests, or (being cynical) they're merely struggling and the diocese wants the money it could get from selling the property. But if you're not sending in much cathedraticum, it typically just means the bishop is indifferent to you and your needs. I would definitely talk to your pastor. He knows what accounts the collections go into. The safest option, in my experience, has been to directly pay for some items or service. Perhaps you pay the electric bill (or some part of it) this month. Or perhaps the sacristy needs new cruets. But again, talk to the pastor.Bravo for breaking the oath of silence, and special bravo for the clever and useful idea. This would apply to secular organizations as well. If you want the organization to continue but you don't like the way it's giving your money to Soros, offer to pay a necessary expense directly. Write a personal check to the electric company or the food service company, and give it to the organization. They can't legally forge it into a check to Soros. I'm still piddling with an alternative Volney ckt using both differential and sum, trying to sense both overall and bilateral R and V. Got a pretty good breadboard setup and some slip-knot electrodes made of solderwick braid. The zero-center diff meter does "interesting" things that I can't correlate yet. This project was slowed down by the resumption of courseware, but I try to spend a little time on it each day.
Today I soldered a couple of 500k pots, mainly for the joy and smell of soldering itself. Volney seems to have a certain amount of magic, and solder always has magic.
While waiting for the iron to cool down so I can put it away, I looked out the door at the FIRST FUCKING COOL DAY SINCE ....
At the same moment when I peeked out the door, an original unrestored '55 Olds sedan rumbled past the house.

Random thought vaguely related to record collections.
Listening to Tchaikovski's 1812 on radio.
He used recognizable melodies to represent Russia, France, Britain. Similar devices were common in symphonies and rhapsodies by other composers. He clearly assumed that his audience would recognize the foreign tunes. How did his audience know them?
Growing up in the era when records and radio were constant parts of life, I never asked this question. It was automatic. Of course the tunes are recognizable.
Before records, melodies were diffused only by sheet music or by travel. A rich sophisticated audience in Petersburg had probably visited Paris, but bourgeois audiences in Moscow probably hadn't been outside Russia.

WHAT WAS THAT? TWICE NOW.

Sounded just like a knock on the door. Got up fast, got dressed, turned on porch light, nothing. Opened door, looked around, nothing. Neighbor across the street turned on porch light just after that; maybe responding to my unusual light, maybe responding to same noise?
Looked around the house, nothing broken or fallen. No wind tonight. No indication of earthquakes. Checked SpokaneNews facebook, nobody reporting crashes or breakins.
I've learned through the years that a single noise causing wakeup from deep sleep often 'registers' as three noises. Apparently passing through stages in the auditory system that are normally inhibited.
Probably never know. Might have been a random knock, might have been house thermal clunk, might have been the stupid Chineseshit refrigerator which occasionally issues an unbelievably loud BANG as part of its defrosting action.

This time five knocks instead of three, though as abovementioned knocks that cause waking are hard to count. Again I turned on the porch light and saw nothing, again the neighbor across the street had their light on as well.

Later: Called the 'Crime check' number. She said if it happens again I should call them immediately so an officer can drive around and try to find the perp. Since I called 20 minutes after the event, they can't do much of anything. I don't like it but it makes perfect sense.
Good side: This compensates for my oversleeping! No chance of resuming sleep tonight.

Hmph.
We've had four hard Rex seasons in a row here. Fall was persistently but not recordly wet. Winter was super-cold and super-snowy. Not record in each measure, but the combination was uniquely damaging to houses and infrastructure. Spring was absolutely recordly wet. Summer was persistently but not recordly hot**. Constant low 90s, never quite bumped 100.
Each time the bad spell breaks, I think "Oh boy! Delta! My favorite! I'm going to enjoy every minute of this week!"
Do I enjoy it? No.
I sleep. Not quite "sleeping around the clock", but much more naptime than usual.
Well, apparently that's how I enjoy it. Might as well redefine.

Not impressed by Gab
I've been halfway watching Gab, an attempt to set up a non-Deepstate alternate to Twitter.
They seem sincere, especially because they're serious about SHOWING THEIR WORK. No clear signs of false-flaggery.
But they're not going to get anywhere. A few days ago they went dark momentarily, then Showed Their Work: Turned out they had first failed to pay their annual domain rent, then got switched off by the domain registrar. Also turned out that they didn't have their own servers but paid one of the big Cloud outfits for server space.
If you want to be independent you have to be independent. Don't depend on ANY of the Deepstate-owned systems that can take you down.
Absolute independence requires complete separation from the Web (eg shortwave or mechanical printing), but a Web-based communication service can't go that far by definition.
Trouble is, Gab isn't even aiming for the limited independence of internal servers.

All oddballs now
Saw a stupid pun about 'record collectors'. Got me thinking....
Globalized and centralized information has turned ALL collectors into oddballs.
Before globalized info (iTunes, the Cloud, Kindle, etc) there was a sharp distinction between hobbyist collectors and non-hobbyist collectors.
Everyone who liked music had a record collection. Everyone who liked to read had a book collection.
Those collections weren't oddball hobbies, while stamp or coin or bottle collections were hobbies.
Crucial difference: Books and records are information. When you had a shelf of LPs or a shelf of dictionaries, you had your own unhackable storehouse of information. It couldn't be altered or censored without your knowledge.
Bottles and stamps are not information. The collector knows many things about his treasured objects, but the stamps and coins can't be consulted, can't be read or played to provide hours of entertainment.
Bookshelves and record racks were standard items of furniture, often built as part of a house. Stamp albums and bottle display cabinets were never standard furniture.
Private information is no longer the norm. We expect our information to be subject to censorship and disappearance. It's unsurprising.

Internal commerce?
Trying to snaz up the courseware text a bit, I was writing about ganglia as waystations and interchanges.
Toll booths?
Interesting thought. Is there for-profit commerce inside the organism? Do some organs intentionally charge tolls or fees for their filtering or distribution or differentiating services?
There is negotiation for sure in the nervous system. Bilateral senses involve a lot of fast diplomacy to insure that the more important or clearer side gets to give the news** to the consuming consciousness. Do some of the ganglia participate in the bargaining solely to acquire more hormones and neurotransmitter? Stockbroker cells? Renal rentiers? Gangliasters?
** Wouldn't it be GODDAMN NICE if macro-scale news gatherers worked this way? Simple example is 'lazy eye'. One eye is dim or out of kilter. The brain doesn't atrophy the eye, but it constantly checks to see which eye is giving a clearer and more usable picture of reality. The image from the bad eye is there but it's masked and overpowered by the good eye. If the good eye is covered up or unfocused, the bad eye instantly takes over. It's still out of kilter, but skewed news is temporarily better than no news.
Come to think of it, the trouble with macro-scale news is that the bad eyes have squashed all the good eyes, so negotiation wouldn't matter.

Color, not angle
Article in Nature on bat echolocation caught my eye.
Claims that bats run into smooth surfaces like windows because the smooth surface reflects sound only at one angle, like light from a mirror. Natural surfaces reflect diffusely in all directions, so the bat can always pick up the reflection.
Immediate problem with the angle idea:
Bats emit sound broadly, not in a focused laser beam. No matter where the wall is, or how it's angled, the bat will pick up a direct perpendicular reflection from some part of the wall. (If the wall is almost behind him, he could fail to hear it; but he's not flying backwards, so it doesn't matter.) Secondarily, the sound reflected from the wall also spreads as it travels, so the echo has a better chance of reaching the bat. My quick animation doesn't show this echo-spread.
I'd bet the problem is in frequency, not angle. Bats emit chirps or sweeps that run through a wide range of frequencies quickly. The bat picks up the response as a "temporal painting" of acoustic colors. Natural surfaces have characteristic absorptions and resonances in sound frequencies, just as they have characteristic absorptions and reflections in light colors.
Plate glass doesn't have a natural pattern of resonances and absorptions. It reflects all the sounds in a bat's range equally, so it appears as colorless sky in the "temporal painting".
Not coincidentally, our auditory system also includes a tremendous set of upsweep and downsweep sensors. We don't consciously use them for echolocation, but blind people learn to do it. Some blind people use a tapping cane to generate transient outputs, others do it the bat way with tongue chirps.
Normally we use our sweep detectors for speech, to read the changes in vowel formant frequency and the intensity changes of syllables.

I reached a similar conclusion a long time ago in making courseware. The restrictions of 'digital rights' get stricter and more tangled every year, but they don't bother me because I have CONFIDENCE in my own ability to produce new images and animations.
Good example today. Part of the text needed an illustration but the appropriate figure isn't there in the materials that come with the text. Using someone else's illustration is theft, and under the newer stringency even copying my own previous finished product is "theft".
One alternative is to buy a commercially produced model which comes with all the required regulations and licensing. I checked Zygote.com, the default provider of anatomical models. They have the item I want, priced at
SIXTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS.
JESUS! Instant decision. I rolled my own. Just about done, and it turned out better than I expected; looks better than most of the illustrations, and it can be wiggled and adjusted, which the rigid $1600 model** can't do.

Hart is speaking in terms of capital. You shouldn't steal someone else's work, and you shouldn't have to fall back on your own saved work either. The PURPOSE of having a talent and skills and tools is to MAKE.
Sharia is transcendently clear on this point. We are agents of God, here for the sole purpose of turning death to life, which means transforming chaos into order and beauty. The same rule applies to all forms of capital. Money, property, intellectual, and human. Don't hoard. Keep enough to get through droughts and bad times, but beyond that you must USE the capital to MAKE MORE LIFE.
Money should be used to employ workers. Property should be used to grow crops or build factories. Intellect should be used to invent. Human capital (families, employees, servants) shouldn't be kept around as ornaments to increase your status, but must be put to constructive use making more people and households and services and stuff.
This is the basis of the rule against interest. Paying interest on savings discourages creative use of capital, and charging interest on loans creates false "value" without creating any new order or life.

Technology about technology
Just noticed a constant tendency. In terms of wide adoption, motion pictures arrived after telephones, before radio, and well before cars and refrigerators and indoor plumbing. Even in USA STRONG cars weren't universal until after WW2 and phones weren't universal until 1970. Horses were delivering milk and mail in the '30s, and most people rode streetcars or buses. In other countries horses are still part of the transportation picture today.
But horses were NOT part of motion pictures in any movie-making country. USA, UK, Greece, Brazil, Turkey, Egypt, Mexico... In ALL of those countries, movies were always filled with cars and telephones. Greek and Egyptian movies in the '50s and '60s always started with a car chase scene, and distraught or catty women were constantly talking on the phone. Kitchens were always up to date. Fridges, plumbing, electric lights, radios.
Movies have always been technology about technology. If you wanted to see a horse, you had to find a historical movie about kings and queens and knights and cowboys of earlier centuries.

Putin had a meeting with the president of South Korea. Russia and SK made a sort of sandwich offer to NK.
Putin outlined existing trade ties with South Korea. Samsung, Hyundai and LG have factories in Russia, employing Russian workers; and Russia sells food to Korea.
Then he made an explicitly commercial invitation:

Decadent empires stop reproducing. This is obvious and well-known. God's natural justice.
One specific part of the justice is not discussed quite as often. Decadent empires have always used eunuchs as courtiers because they're less likely to compete with the emperor. Eunuchs have high status in decadent empires, leading ordinary people to copy their style and lack of output and lack of opposition to the Emperor.
The Bible is full of eunuchs.
Esther gives us Persia:

Why astrologers don't .... Oops

I pulled this out to show why astrologers normally stick to vague predictions. This page contains several specific predictions, which I was debunking thoroughly....

The November issue would be gathered over several months, edited and VariTyped in the first week of October, printed in the second week, collated and mailed in the third week of October. Goal, reach the subscriber's mailbox near Nov 1.
This particular article was longer than most, and Hart commented on the rare length in his editorial for the issue. He thought it was an especially important and well-built set of prophecies, worthy of recording for future examination. So the article probably got VariTyped earlier than the rest.
Was it possible to slip in a news item that happened on the 15th? Barely. Would have required reprinting one page and postponing the collation. On the edge.
Would Hart pull such a trick? No. Entirely out of character ... except ... that Hart himself was getting ill at that time, was preparing to close down the paper, and had an actual stroke somewhere around the end of 1964. So "out of character" is also on the edge given the date.

Looks like we're finally out of the 90s for the season. A week earlier than predicted, thanks solely to smoke from wildfires. The last few and next few days were supposed to be mid-90s but are topping out in the mid-80s.

Household hints
I'm not much of a householder, so I don't have a lot of household hints. These are a couple of new findings:
1. A jeweler's saw makes a perfect cheese-cutter. The fine serrations and narrow blade get through cheese fast and easy, without pressure and without sticking in the middle. You need a raised cutting platform so the ends of the saw can go below the cheese; or just lift the cheese slightly. A plastic sandwich box is a good platform AND a good container for the slices.
2. Adding a spoon of cooked barley to the eggs before mixing makes an omelet less greasy and more tasty. The separate tastes and textures come through better.

First missed point by Esolen
Esolen normally hits the nail on the head. He missed this one.
Esolen is comparing the statue-pullers to the main character in a Twilight Zone episode. Serling was using the character to represent McCarthy. The character goes around trying to eradicate evil by snitching on people, often falsely. He acquires magical powers and uses the powers to weaken all evil people by making them short. As soon as the wish comes true, he finds that he can't reach things because he's a dwarf. Yeah, okay, karma. Got it.
Esolen has the sides backwards. Serling was also statue-pulling. He was defending the Establishment against a rebel. After the 1954 Cohn Coup, all of TV was solely devoted to pulling down the statues of anti-CIA (alias anti-Soviet) rebels. Serling's story wouldn't have made it to air if he had tried to take the anti-CIA side.
The modern statue-pullers are not McCarthy. They are Serling, working FOR the Establishment and eradicating rebels and Rebels. They don't need to worry about karma or justice. They will win. All Deplorables will be EXTERMINATED on schedule.
Incidentally, many of the commenters didn't even get the basic point of the fable. They said that pulling down statues of Mohammed is okay because Islam is the ultimate total evil. Oops. Aside from the fact that there AREN'T** any statues of Mohammed by Islamic definition, they were blinded by the classic eye-log.

** Yesterday I was comparing idolaters vs abstracters. Hadn't thought of it from this side... Maybe old God was a shrewd strategist when he prohibited graven images. When there aren't any physical representations of God, the enemies of God have nothing to pull down, no physical leverage.
You can see a much more refined version of this problem in the lawsuits among splitting Anglicans. The rebels who are attempting to move back toward God are getting distracted and weakened by fights over the church building and real estate. If they'd pay more attention to the Commandment, they'd rent a vacant storefront and let the Satanists keep the building. Loosen = solve. Se-lu.

A charter for self-defense
[Expanded and retitled from yesterday's brief notes.]
Let's put together a broad set of equivalences, starting with the idea that Natural Law is meant to provide an INHIBITORY response or NEGATIVE FEEDBACK for Deplorables against Insatiables.
How do you get from order to chaos and death? Positive feedback. Exponential functions. Wanting everything.
How do you restore and maintain order? Negative feedback. Tanh functions. Wanting something.
Positive feedback people = Insatiables.
Negative feedback people = Deplorables.
In a HEALTHY organism or culture both forces are always present. The Sorosian side of the world is no longer healthy or survivable because the inhibitory side has been eliminated and outlawed.
Natural Law is explicitly about strengthening NF and suppressing PF. Sharia does it
smartly by harnessing the PF people to serve the NF people and vice versa.
The Parkinsonian agency or NGO, the 'War On', is the classic excitatory input, self-generating positive feedback. Make a problem, justify more budget, use more budget to make more problems.
What's the opposite, the inhibitory side?

Next day: Got it. The opposite of WarOn is SELF-DEFENSE at all levels, physical and commercial and informational. SELF-DEFENSE is the organizational equivalent of inhibitory synapses and negative feedback.
A charter for self-defense would include these items:
1. You should be free to own and use physical weapons and walls to defend your PROPERTY and BODY against ordinary criminals.
2. You should be free to own and use cyberweapons and cyberwalls and pre-Disney copyrights to defend your INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY from thieves and monopolies and governments.
3. You should be able to defend your CAPITAL and BUSINESS against monopolies and hostile takeovers and aggressive lawsuits and arbitrary confiscation.
4. You should be able to defend your SKILL against skill-thieves like schools and universities and innovative disrupters like Uber.
5. Cities should be able to defend their SOVEREIGNTY against black-robed demons, and to defend their people against forcible invasions of migrants and criminals by higher levels of government.
6. Governments and common carriers should not be allowed to eliminate INFORMATION needed for self-defense.

Only (1) corresponds to a currently active law. The others would be new.
I've been discussing (2) through (5) for years. I haven't gotten to (6) until just now.
(6) is needed to protect leakers like Wikileaks and soros.dcleaks.com. The latter has already been silenced. (6) would also protect policemen or writers who attempt to WARN their local populations about migrant invasions and unsafe areas. This is a big problem in EU, and I'm sure it will be coming to USA STRONG in the next few milliseconds. Evil accelerates exponentially when Soros is in control.

Filling in Hart's biography
I bought a copy of Alphia Hart's novel through Alibris because I enjoy the idea of owning something that Hart actually printed.
Scrub Oaks is a (presumably) autobiographical story of a smalltown Okla newspaper editor. I skimmed the story and don't think I'll bother to read it... Hart was an excellent journalist (no quotes) and a careful writer, but didn't have the knack of fiction. It's clunky. He should have written the novel the same way he wrote his columns!

The author of SCRUB OAKS is a former newspaper man, who has held editorial posts on the Tulsa Tribune, the Wichita Beacon, the Springfield (Ohio) News-Sun, the Binghamton Press, the Syracuse Herald, and the Daily Oklahoman. Preceding his entry into the large daily field, he began his newspaper career by setting type and feeding presses after school hours and on Saturdays in the (like so many others) extinct Lahoma Sun, and has been editor and publisher of several other weeklies in scattered Okla towns. After two years in the Navy as photographer during WW2 he returned to the States to work for the Army Air Force, and for a decade wrote and supervised the production of training films.Adding more detail: Hart was born in 1902. In 1920 when he started his career, Lahoma had a population of 280, well under the usual threshold (~400) for a weekly. The Sun had a circulation of 300 according to NW Ayer. The other 'scattered weeklies' and major papers would have been during the 20s and early 30s. His photography job at the Daily Oklahoman was from 1935 to 1940, then the military through the '40s. He took up with Hubbard in Phoenix around 1951, got discontented and married and moved back to Enid in '54, where he set up his press and started publishing his own newspaper again. The Aberree lasted from '54 to '65 when Hart had a stroke. I still can't find details after that point; not clear if he died quickly, but he was definitely out of commission.

Se-lu 11, VW/BK edition
BBC's Travel department has a remarkable tendency to get things RIGHT. Especially remarkable from the satanic baseline of BBC, but remarkable enough for anyone in the field of "journalism". Even in earlier less loony times, journalists were always provably wrong in every area where you could personally check their results.
BBC's travel writers covered Oklahoma twice and got it RIGHT both times. Again especially salient because Okla is the worst victim of every type of bias.
Now they're breaking a myth about Germany, and again they're right.
Main point: If Germans were really as efficient as everyone says, Germany wouldn't have lost two big INDUSTRIALIZED wars against inefficient opponents like Britain and Russia and USA.
This is another case of 'owning the conversation'. I can check this point thoroughly in technical terms.
VW was the main vector of the owned conversation about Kraut efficiency. I owned 8 VWs and worked on several others, so I'm qualified to check.**
Was it efficient? Not by ANY measure, gas mileage or space usage or longevity. Was it well-engineered? No. Reliable? Hell no. Safe? Fuck no.
Compared to any American small or smallish car of the era, the bug failed every test. Rambler and Willys and even poor little Henry J beat VW in every possible way.
The bug even failed by its own standards. Rear engines and air cooling and torsion bars and unit bodies have advantages and disadvantages. VW used all of those technologies and spoiled the advantages with UNNECESSARY shitty design.
I can check electronics less thoroughly. This 1965 Grundig often appears in the background of my pictures:
I bought it in 1991, used it three times before it broke. Tried to fix it, but every piece was too brittle. Fell apart. By comparison, my 1972 Radio Shack amplifier, designed in America and built in Japan, has been used EVERY DAY FOR 45 YEARS and still works perfectly.
Other Teutonic stuff has the same characteristic as Kraut stuff. I discussed Danish Brüel & Kjær acoustic equipment last year. Same as VW and Grundig. Beautifully built, seems elegant in theory, but fails every time you try to USE IT, and stubbornly resists repairs.
Pre-1975 American stuff, and Russian stuff of all eras, had the opposite characteristic. Loose, inelegant, often ugly, seemingly inefficient but actually efficient.
Efficiency means providing the maximum output or service for a given input.
An object that can be USED for long periods, and REPAIRED easily without delicate specialized parts and tools, is efficient.

Sanest article I've read in a long time!
A discussion of new approaches to cancer. Essentially reverses the standard variable and constant. Previously we considered the mutations to be the variable, so we tried to eliminate them. But in fact the mutations are the constant. DNA is always getting messed up from one cause or another. Controlling the total result requires strengthening the feedback loops, making the environment more unfriendly to cancer.
Beautiful comparison with drugs and crime:
To give you an analogy: If we think about fighting drug dealing in the inner city, the sort of first approach that someone might want to take is just go in there and arrest all the drug dealers. The first thing that you’re going to find is you’re never going to arrest them all. The ones that you leave are going to be more aggressive and nasty, maybe even smarter. So you’re not going to fix the problem. Instead, you might want a more long-term strategy where you also created better schools, jobs, and so forth. In other words, if you address the environment that was leading to the drug dealing, you would probably have a much more stable solution to the problem.Researchers have realized that War On Cancer leaves the smarter and sneakier cells in place, just as War On Drugs leaves the smart gang bosses in place, ready to hire more juvies. When I grouped superstitions and fetishes as idolatries, I tried to fit literal idolatry into the same pattern. It doesn't fit at all, but it does generate another divide.
There are idolaters and abstracters on both sides of Natural Law.
Eastern Orthodox and pre-Vat2 Romans are close to NL, and are nothing but idolatry. Mary, saints, icons, relics, wafers, wine, thousands of OBJECTS that crowd out poor old God.
Bergoglian Rome, and most "mainline" Protestants, and the more secularized Jews, are still into idolatry. The focus on objects remained CONSTANT when these demoninations (typo, leave it!) departed from Natural Law.
Islam is ferociously opposed to idolatry. God is abstract. God doesn't even have an image or a visual representation. Mohammed isn't a semi-god or 1/3 of God or anything. He's the greatest and last HUMAN prophet.
Many of the non-"mainline" Protestants and Jews are also purely abstract. Church of Christ, Baptists, Hasidim. Plain churches, no images or icons.
The variable of idolatry doesn't correlate with following Natural Law, but it does correlate with HOW you obey Natural Law. Across all three main faith forms, the non-idolaters focus heavily on your BEHAVIOR. Following the written rules is more important than worshipping the symbols and objects, and your direct communication and experience of God is most important of all.
Basic divide: For the idolaters, God is a noun. For the non-idolaters, God is a verb.

Similar to this item, here's another strong piece of pre-Bergoglio Catholic thinking, based on a Ratzinger quote.

Natural Law media
One crucial and revealing difference between the '30s Depression and the current Depression.
In the '30s, and continuing until the mid-50s, our media were closer to Natural Law. Starting with the Cohn Coup in 1954 and expanding exponentially ever since, our media have been reinforcing the Insatiables and killing the Deplorables.

More apt than they think
ZH cites a chart from an article in UK Guardian. The chart shows that private police are more common than public police in the countries with the worst inequality. Not hugely surprising, though India was more extreme than I expected.
Guardian compares the expenditures for private police with spending on education and welfare. Standard Sorosian idiocy. "If we were spending more on education and welfare, we wouldn't have inequality."
Nope. Education and welfare are not the CURES for inequality, they're among the major CAUSES of inequality. War On Poverty is explicitly designed to LOCK people in poverty, and the NGOs that Guardian wants to increase are Sorosian destroyers of civilization. War On Illiteracy wastes 12 years of a child's life that COULD have been spent acquiring useful skills and doing useful work.
Guardian, which is just another Deepstate servant, also missed the MAIN cure for inequality, which is to place HARDASS limits on the rich. Not taxes. That's an intentional distraction because the rich control the "legislatures" that write the tax laws. Every change in tax law makes it easier for the rich to evade taxes.
You have to SHUT AND SHOOT the official mechanisms for generating FAKE value, like stock markets and central banks and related abstractions, and simulaneously make it much easier to generate REAL value, sharply curtailing both REGULATION and LITIGATION.
Guardian doesn't mention any of that, because Guardian IS the central banks and the stock market. Guardian's role is to create MORE inequality and MORE evil while pretending to oppose them. Classic pluponent.

Parkinson Rex
The birds seem to think autumn is approaching. They're clubbing this morning to discuss travel plans. I don't feel any sign of autumn yet. Rex has been in full command of the NW this summer, only letting go for a few scattered days. The Weather Bureau thinks the 90s will break again, maybe for good?? later this week. Hope so.
Ma Nature needs to get her ass in gear and kick Rex out of town.
Weather has been ruled by Parkinson, self-reinforcing highs and lows with no negative feedback, at least since 2005. Jet streams are pinned in place. This pattern happens every 20 years or so; late 30s, early 50s, early 70s, and now a much longer pindown. Every time the pindown happens it leads to floods and droughts.
The pindown times and mobile times are probably responding to magnetic patterns. Earth's magnetic field had a major mode shift in 1974, and weather followed, and human thought patterns also followed. Globalism, total Parkinson, had been building its power since 1946 and grabbed most of the control levers in '74.
At the level of human thoughts and powers the unipolarity is finally breaking down thanks to Putin. Nature abhors unipolar structures and NEVER builds things that way. All cells, organs, organisms, and communities of organisms, have infinite layers of negative feedback. Excitation vs inhibition at all scales to PREVENT monstrosities like USA STRONG or cancer from taking total control of the system.
Emerson: Though no checks to a new evil appear, the checks exist and will appear.
Putin understands his role as the check, the inhibitory synapse, the counterbalance to Soros. This speech shows his intent to run the inhibitory side of the world in accordance with Nature.
Where's the Putin for jet streams?

Subcarrier?
Super-random thought after working on neurology courseware.
Myelin enables some neurons to conduct faster. An axon normally conducts a charge smoothly along its length. Myelin overlays the axon with longer jumps, like adding a system of town criers, stationed every three blocks, to a village. Without the criers a message has to be passed from house to house, and may take a full day to cross the village. With the criers a message can pass from one side of the village to the other in a few minutes.
But the gossips in the village are still whispering, and the slow movement of charge in the axon is still happening. When myelin is lost to disease, the nerves still conduct signals, but the conduction may be too slow for proper muscle action or proper feedback.
Dumb question: Since the axons don't decay or atrophy, they're still doing SOMETHING underneath the fast myelin-jumped conduction. What are they doing? Is this like a subcarrier? Is this the source of the 'alternate world' that is only available through dreams or drugs?

Reversed stirrups
Spokane's taxi drivers held a funeral cortege for Singh, the young driver who was murdered last week by a perfectly evil lunatic.

Singh was known among the drivers as Dagger for obvious reasons. No PC in the guild.
Uber, another form of evil, hasn't made great inroads here because the taxi service is competent. I used taxis several times after my surgery last year ... in fact EXACTLY ONE YEAR AGO as of this moment! ... and found all of the drivers to be courteous and interesting.
Down with skill-murdering Uber and up with skill-estate taxis. Taxis will abide.

Doesn't make commercial sense
What is Google doing with Youtube? Demonetizing all sorts of channels and videos, most of which are NOT controversial. Changing format and structure to make playlists harder to follow.
I'm not fussing about "censorship" because Youtube is a commercial TV network, fully entitled to choose its programming by any standards it wants. I'm simply puzzled by the RESULTS of these moves.
Normally a publisher or network wants to keep people reading or watching. Addiction is the goal. These latest moves make it much harder and less desirable to stick around.
Normally when one publisher gets self-destructively stupid, other publishers move in and grab the audience.
Nothing is normal now. Youtube is happy to lose viewers, and nobody is trying to pick up the lost viewers.

Thanks to the firemen
Got an epidemic of brush fires this week.
It's dry and hot as usual. More persistently dry and hot this year but not extremely hot.
Yesterday a good-sized fire started on the bluff west of downtown, probably from a railroad hotbox. The city and county firemen swarmed it and got it under control fast.
[Update: Not hotbox. Arson.]
Thanks to the firemen who KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING.
At the same time a flurry of small fires started in the east part of town. These were definitely arson, and the arsonist was spotted and identified.
Observation after watching this pattern for several years: Arson is a daylight crime and it's not a drunk crime. Unlike assaults and rapes and murders, arson doesn't start when the bars close. Intuitively you'd think an arsonist would prefer darkness for maximum delta-drama and minimum detection, but it doesn't happen that way.

What flood?
ZH shows several videos and pics of the "flooded" Arkema chemical plant exploding.
THERE'S NO WATER IN ANY OF THE PICTURES. One video is taken on a highway with a drainage ditch. No water in the ditch, pavement and grass are dry. All the low spots are DRY AND CLEAN. There's no mudline on the buildings in the chemical plant.
I've been in a real flood. Enid 1973. Water stuck around for weeks in low spots, debris and rocks were scattered around, and buildings that had been flooded showed clear mudlines where the water stood. Buildings in Manhattan STILL had mudlines in 1956, left over from the '51 flood.
Here's a picture of downtown Manhattan a few days after the '51 flood. Mud, mud, mud.
Maybe there's flooding in some parts of Houston, but the Arkema plant is NOT flooded now and shows NO indication of recent flooding. All the fake "news" stories led us to believe that the tanks were unreachable and uncontrollable because the whole place was submerged.
I guess we have a new Orwell. Submerged = bone-dry.

Tech sidenote: Look at the fantastically stupid steering mechanism on the forklift/bulldozer thingamajig. The single rear wheel does the steering. Instead of the usual linkage and steering wheel, there's a huge long tiller (or maybe a cable-housing?) that passes directly over the driver's head. What happens when he stands up? BONK! ... Web search doesn't find anything remotely similar. Small in-store forklifts often have three wheels, but the only big three-wheeler I can see is the Clark Tructractor built in the '30s. None of them have this strange tiller. Bonus non-self-explanatory picture from an all-Clark page in Flickr.

Continuing on the subject of owning the conversation, comparing Amazon with GM.
What happens when a company owns the conversation? Vega happens.
The April 2000 issue of Collectible Auto has a satisfyingly detailed article on the infinite failure of the Vega. Lists a dozen horrible failure modes, each involving a dozen separate design flaws that worked beautifully together for disaster.
Example:
Another problem involved the two-barrel Rochester carburetor. The engine would shake so badly that it loosened the screws holding the top cover on the float chamber. The top cover would then jump up and down, which activated the accelerator pump, which shot raw gasoline through the cylinders and into the exhaust system. Fuel would then puddle inside the muffler and eventually explode. The early mufflers would blow toward the fuel tank, so later mufflers were designed to blow away from the tank.Note that they only fixed the last stage. They weren't bothered by the "shaking so badly" part. Most of the flaws were totally unforced errors, caused by a manager's Bright Idea to Advance Technology and Disrupt Innovation and Cut Costs. Nobody had the power to question the Bright Ideas, and even worse, the testing end of the process was explicitly designed to avoid testing anything.

Constants and variables 81, AMZNGMRCA edition
In the past week two separate articles have been published that let the air out of Amazon's all-consuming image.
The most important is by rating agency Moody, listing Amazon's relative dominance in various fields. It turns out that Amazon dominates its original business of bookselling and publishing, but is just one of many players in all the other fields it claims to own. It's 90% in publishing and 10% in most other areas, and ALL online purchasing is still only 10% of all retail sales.
Surprised the hell out of me. I'm not involved in retail, so I don't have direct experience in any of those areas. All available sources have been "alarmed" (actually pleased) about Amazon's total takeover of all business... including the "rebellious" sources who should have been pulling off the Emperor's clothes. In other words, everyone was bribed.
The only area I'm directly connected with is textbook publishing. Some of my royalties come from sales through Amazon.... and come to think of it, Amazon sales are less than 10% of all sales.
Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised!
Constant: The only thing Amazon FULLY OWNS is the national conversation about Amazon. Similar to earlier ownerships by GM and RCA.
Variable: Why are these balloon-pops appearing NOW, after three or four years of universal juggernaut assumptions? Is Amazon's bribing department getting lazy?

Need to praise just as loudly....
Since I've complained loudly and often about Group Health's practice of holding a life-sustaining prescription hostage until the victim comes in at least three times for useless appointments, I need to praise the END of this practice just as loudly.
This year the annual BP pill renewal came up as always in August. I tried to order the next refill, knowing full well that I was triggering the captivity procedure.
Nope! They sent me a message saying that an annual appointment would be a good idea but ISN'T REQUIRED, and the refill went through like clockwork!
Especially amazing since the return of morality happened AFTER the buyout by Kaiser. Normally a buyout leads to immediate loss of all service, basically shutting down the mergee. Not this time. The new owner has IMPROVED the operations of the mergee.
