They're SUPERSTITIONS. They're indirect connections of fear and hatred to objects that are ever more remotely associated with a real or planted fear.
Superstitions and fetishes are the same mechanism applied to different emotions.

When do these indirect associations develop?
Superstitions flourish when real fears are either genuinely absent or forcibly deleted. Superstitions can be cultivated to swamp out real fears.
