Denyse at MindMatters cites a growing realization in the AI side of neurology.

Functional MRI measures blood flow as a proxy for brain activity. It shows where blood is being sent in the brain, presumably because neurons in that area are more active during a mental task.

The problem is that the level of activity for any given person probably won’t be the same twice, and a measure that changes every time it is collected cannot be applied to predict anyone’s future mental health or behavior.

Denyse summarizes:

Maybe we have got it backwards. Our minds read things but it doesn’t follow that we can read our minds. We can’t even read brains. Which is not even the same thing.

Yup. In fact we can't even read our OWN minds accurately from inside our OWN heads. This is hardly new. Freud understood the point, tried to systematize the distinction between various mental spaces, tried to use it for therapy. He failed. His followers are good cult leaders and money-makers but they don't cure or even help actual patients. They always make things worse to keep the patients addicted to treatment or drugs.

This failure should have been a warning sign. Now some neuroscientists are seeing the same warning again, but I'm sure the "profession" will still roar ahead at full speed, forming cults and training torturers and getting billion-dollar grants.

And here's where Del Giudice's brilliant observation comes in. The brain generates separate minds as a defense against pathogens.

Some viruses (eg chickenpox and polio) leave sleeper agents in the nervous system, waiting for opportunities to pounce, constantly monitoring emotional states for a susceptible moment. They know that our immune defenses are down when we're panicked and frantic and sleepless and weary. TIME TO STRIKE!

During the billion-year war with viruses, our nervous systems have developed all kinds of countermeasures, including cloak and dagger techniques like separate awarenesses.

Giant psychopath-ogens like presidents and governors and "public" "health" officials do exactly the same as microscopic pathogens. They get into our nervous system via TV and iPhones, and then they wait for opportunities to take over the entire body. They have an advantage over chickenpox, because the direct mental injections of TV and iPhones allow them to CONTROL the emotional state.

Our nervous system can fool both sizes of pathogen by developing separate awarenesses, complete defensible spaces fortified with language and logic. The first wall of defense, of course, is to disconnect the direct injectors as much as possible.
