It's dead, you fool.
BBC, the
perfectly objective and impartial network, runs a weekly feature called Our Suffering Dying Tortured Mother Planet Goddess or some such shit.
Today's story on Our Suffering Dying Tortured Mother Planet Goddess was about new research on the geological history of the Dead Sea.
Pseudoscientist: "About 120k years ago the Dead Sea went dry all on its own, with no humans anywhere. Of course the reason it's dropping now is that all the countries nearby are taking the water from the rivers before it reaches the sea."
Show host: "So, if the Dead Sea can dry out all on its own, 120,000 years ago, with no human activity, imagine how bad it can be now, when human water use combines with human-induced climate change!
Think about that.
FIRST, let's look at the name of the Dead Sea.
What is the Dead Sea's first name, boys and girls?
That's correct, boys and girls. The Dead Sea's first name is
Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead.
Get it? Dead. Expired. Passed on. Stiff. Ex-sea.
It's a fucking stagnant basin with no outlet and lots of evaporation. It is not a pleasant resort or a great source of fish or anything. It is
So there's no human need to maintain it.
If the water is used up
before it reaches the stagnant basin, it may cause trouble for farmers downriver from the drying-out point. We have a similar problem in the American West with the Arkansas and Colorado rivers.
But the stagnant basin itself is not a resource that needs to be preserved. It's not a problem that needs to be solved.
SECOND: let's look at the infantile religious thinking.
Try to put it in the form of a syllogism.
Premise A: Without human influence the Dead Sea dried out completely.
Premise B: With two horrible evil human influences it hasn't dried out yet.
Conclusion: It's going to DRY UP EVEN MORE THAN COMPLETELY! OH NO!
Of course there's really only one human influence, but I'm trying to formulate what goes on in the "minds" of the Gaian "scientist" and the objective ho ho announcer. They ignore the simple fact that these "two" influences acting together have not managed to dry up the sea, while climate effects before the existence of humans did dry up the sea. Instead, they assume that the incomplete effect is more complete than the complete effect, because the incomplete effect is caused by evil humans who must be eradicated to preserve this fragile delicate fragile delicate fragile delicate fragile delicate ecosystem.
Yup, you guessed it. A
Loughnerian syllogism as usual.
