Later than thought
Got curious about one aspect of Deepstate's chaos generator. The push to criminalize tobacco began in the '60s but didn't change "laws" about smoking in public places until the late '80s.

Everyone knows that tobacco assists civilization. Tobacco keeps you calm and helps you tolerate unpleasant situations. As smoking has decreased, brittleness and snowflakery have increased. This is a strong and intentional correlation.

Warlike crusaders who want to CHANGE THE WORLD by exterminating heretics have always been 100% pure. No meat, no sex, no smoke, no drink. Crusaders can't allow any influence that might soften their attitudes.

Given that CIA's chaos generator was turned on around 1960, when did it start to abolish this particular aspect of civilization? Why did it take 20 years for the serious change in "laws"?

The Wikileaks archive surprised me. Most of CIA's activities in the '60s and '70s were just ordinary trade intelligence, spotting tobaccor consumption trends and tariff trends in various countries. Serving the proper function of a spy agency, working FOR American commerce. The first evidence of anti-tobacco activity appeared in 1978.

Where did it come from?

Saudi.

Here's the cable. I've decapitalized and cleaned up punctuation.

Text follows of draft resolution which Saudi Arabian delegation has asked USDEL to co-sponsor.

USDEL believes that in light of Secretary Califano's firm views on subject, which he expressed while here in Geneva as head of USDEL and which were widely reported in local press, it would be embarrassing for us to decline to co-sponsor, or at least to support. Saudis would probably be prepared to accept language changes to obtain our support-cosponsorship. Department's guidance needed ASAP.

The thirty-first World Health Assembly, recalling resolutions concerning the health hazards of tobacco-smoking and ways towards its limitation;

Recognizing the increasing and indisputable scientific evidence showing that tobacco-smoking is a major cause of chronic bronchitis, emphysema and lung cancer, as well as a major risk factor for myocardial infarction, certain pregnancy-related and neonatal disorders, and a number of other serious health problems; and that it also has harmful effects on those who are involuntarily exposed to tobacco smoke, urges member states:

(1) To adopt comprehensive measures to control toabacco smoking by providing for increased taxation on the sale of cigarettes and disallowing publicity for promotion of smoking in the news media, including newspapers, radio and television;

(2) To strengthen health education concerning smoking as part of general health education, through close collaboration among health and school authorities and other relevant agencies, taking into account the different needs of the various target groups;

(3) To protect the health of non-smokers and their right to enjoy an atmosphere unpolluted by tobacco smoke...

Note the implicit understanding that governments CAN control the media, which CIA of course knew better than anyone. Note also the strong emphasis on 2nd-hand smoke, which is NOT "indisputable evidence".

The real purpose of the move was not about health.

BRUTAL SYLLOGISM:

If we were concerned with health, we'd have a functional medical system.

We don't have a functional medical system. We have a medical system that KILLS MORE PEOPLE THAN CIGARETTES, through opioid prescriptions and botched surgeries and hospital-caused infections.

Therefore we are NOT concerned with health.

We are only concerned with obliterating all aspects of civilization.

Sidenote: Though the chaos generator started later than thought, the Saudi influence started earlier than thought. Conventional wisdom says that we didn't start obeying Saudi until the mid-80s, after they had done us the big favor of sacrificing oil profits to help us ruin Russia. Since then we've been paying them back. This cable indicates that we were obeying Saudi in 1978.
