Bridging the gap LITERALLY and LITERATELY
Earlier today I cited a
beautiful example of permanent caste division, the eternal unbridgeable gap between Insatiables and Deplorables, from a 1922 journal for Classical Educators.
I've often bashed modern "conservatives" for favoring Classical Education instead of hands-on tech training. They've got it backwards. If you want to bring out Natural Law morality in your students AND give them REAL TRUTH, you have to let them
WORK WITH REALITY.
Delving into the 1922 journal again, found an even more INDESCRIBABLY BEAUTIFUL example of a teacher who got BOTH jobs done. Gave students PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE in Latin and classics as a SIDE-EFFECT of hands-on training in classical BUILDING METHODS.
EXACTLY RIGHT.
The Latin class at Garnett HS built REAL BRIDGES that people actually USED, following a plan developed by Caesar's army! Note especially that the girls enjoyed chopping down trees. What???? Impossible! Everyone knows etc etc etc. Barefoot pregnant kitchen etc etc etc.
Of course the whole thing would be impossible now. We're WAY too progressive and enlightened to let anyone except PROFESSIONAL BRIDGE BUILDERS build bridges, and the PROFESSIONAL BRIDGE BUILDERS must take 20 years to generate tons of environmental impact statements and diversity impact statements and must finance archeological digs to preserve Indigenouses Firstses Nationses Peopleses Artifactseses, and... the only thing PROFESSIONAL BRIDGE BUILDERS can't do is build a bridge. Modern bridges immediately collapse and kill a dozen people.
Sidenote: Garnett was an interesting place. Many cities in the plains were founded as experimental utopian communities. Most faded and disappeared quickly, but Garnett turned into a proper city while retaining some of its original socialist flavor.
