Inhibiting my excitement
Applying a little inhibitory input against my excitement over CataLUnya's decision....
Decentralizing is Nature's way, but there is a strict limit on decentralizing.
Many regions want independence but only a small number can handle it. CataLUnya is certainly among the few.
First and foremost, it was ALREADY a nation for several centuries before the 1800's trend toward consolidation in Europe. Aragon was a power similar to Portugal.
Second, it has always maintained its own language and culture. Consolidated Spain, based in Castile, has forced international organizations to treat CataLUnyan as a dialect, but it's easily a distinct language by all the usual standards. It's about halfway between Castilian and French.
Third, it has plenty of resources. Factories, ports, smart workers.
Kurdistan also meets the standards, with 2500 years of strong national history. The Medes were among the major players in Old Testament times.
Another independence movement in the news today is an English-speaking region of the West African Francophone nation of Cameroun. Doesn't meet the criteria. Wasn't a nation before colonial times, doesn't have its own resources and connections.
