RIch world problem
My typing is atrocious and full of errors today because I'm using an atrocious keyboard. My excellent Fujitsu FKB8725 failed and can't be reanimated by the usual cleaning or wiggling. I always save the crappy keyboards that come with computers. When Fujitsu failed I had 4 backups available, and picked the least atrocious. All the keys work on this one, but it has NO NUM LOCK KEY. It's set permanently in Num Lock mode.
None of the tricks suggested online do any good.
As expected, all of those discussions began with the standard thunder of Tech-Tyrants INSTRUCTING the original questioner that there is NO REASON ON EARTH to use a Num Lock key because ALL PROPER GITHUBIANS STAY IN NUM LOCK MODE AT ALL TIMES. But even after the thunder subsided and one or two genuine answers cautiously crept in, the genuine answers don't work for this Dell shit.
My own damn fault because I hadn't ordered another Fujitsu BEFORE this one failed. Luckily I was able to order a new one immediately.
Thank heaven for Ebay. Good stuff never goes away; it's always available on Ebay.
4/17: The new keyboard didn't help, and it was sort of weird to boot. Extra keys for Euro stuff, other keys in the wrong place. Apparently the old one shorted the PS2 to USB adapter gadget when it got jammed. Bought a new adapter, shook the old keyboard out, and everything is back to normal! Now I have one more backup keyboard just in case.
