Perfect illustration of
academic thinking that's crazier than Martian theories.
Gopnik starts with a set of wildly delusional bigotries about America that exist only in the empty echoing calvariums of New York hyperwackos, and assembles them inconsistently and incoherently to reach a totally garbled "conclusion".
Real schizies also start with head-voices, but they use better logic. More internal consistency.
Insane elites aren't really an interesting subject. Always been that way, somewhat worse than usual now.
More interesting question: Trump is a super-rich New Yorker. How did he acquire such a
complete and accurate sense of the plight of non-NYC Americans? You can't just make it up. You can't get it from newspapers or TV because all the media, both R and D, impart 100% NYC lunacy and NYC orthodoxies. Plenty of real Americans write on the Web, but you wouldn't know which writings to follow unless you
already had a grasp on reality.
You have to get it from hearing and observing real Americans.
I don't suppose Trump spends a lot of time listening to the housekeepers in his hotels, at least not directly. He must have a system for listening. His managers must have an organized procedure to keep the big boss in the loop. How normal people are living, what they want, what they're unhappy about.
