Twice in one day I have to say a good word for a few journalists!

Watched the press conference of Dr Slithery Snake from Centers for Disease Cultivation [CDC], discussing the first Ebola case. Over and over the journalists hammered Slithery Snake with the same two questions: Is this "individual" an American, or is "they" from Liberia? What's the number of the flight that "they" came over on?

At the end, Dr Slithery Snake had implicitly admitted that "they" is a man, which was almost guaranteed anyway, and Dr Snake was calling him "him" instead of "them". But Dr Snake never did answer any other questions.

Yet more proof: Privacy laws are killers. Not by accident, either. Privacy laws are fully intended to smash civilization and kill millions.

  Education prevents crime?
One of the top thousand toxic spewings that Commie Satans constantly spew is the following spewing:

"Education prevents crime."

We finally have ONE instance where education would have at least altered a crime. The first and last instance in human history. The single solitary time when better school learning would have made some difference in the commission of a crime, and possibly even dissuaded the criminal from committing the crime.

Local news:

The man arrested for a murder that made national headlines pleaded guilty to 2nd Degree Murder on Monday morning. Jason M. Hart took a plea deal with will put him behind bars for a little over 14 years for the murder of Regan Jolley in 2013. Detectives say Hart killed Jolley by strangling her and trying to dispose of her body in a tub of acid, much like a character in the television show Breaking Bad tried to do.

A good college chemistry course would have given Hart a better understanding of the properties of acids and bases. He could then have found a more effective method, or perhaps could have decided to use a lawyer instead of his hands.

Lawyers are surprisingly good weapons against nasty ex-wives or ex-girlfriends. You don't get the momentary satisfaction of Total Revenge, but you also miss the life sentence that comes after the momentary satisfaction. You just get freedom from bullying. You get the chance to live an unbothered life. I speak from experience.

  Sympathy for a journalist?
I have a slight bit of sympathy for a journalist! What's the world coming to?

Article in WIRED is a rare example of proper journalism. Researched the facts, connected things properly, came to a valid conclusion.

Conclusion: Open source is not a good way to run a public utility like the Web. Open source is fine for programs running within single computers, using some of the resources of public utilities.

Basic problem: Serious quality testing has to keep Murphy in the room. Murphy is notoriously distractible and erratic, so this is HARD work.

This takes lots of time and a large set of people with varied skills and talents. Those people have to spend concentrated hours on the task, and they have to set aside their egos. How does this happen? MONEY. You have to PAY managers to keep the varied people on task without exploding, and you have to PAY the varied people enough to compensate for their bruised egos.

Open source provides either (1) no QA at all, or (2) QA by people who share the skills and personality of the original programmer. Murphy isn't in the room.

The WIRED writer didn't hit all of those points, but he did lay out the facts clearly and even-handedly. Good job. And what did he get? Presumably he got money, but he also got some unmerited abuse in the combox from history-impaired techboys. Lots of this crap: "They really just wanted to attract as much as they could with sensationalism, Modern journalism sadly."

No. Sensationalism is the most basic and PROPER skill of journalism. Been there since the Town Crier. It has nothing to do with bias or triviality. If you don't grab eyes and ears, you don't get ANY message across. Complaining about sensationalism is like complaining about the existence of steering wheels when you should be complaining about drunk drivers. But then techboys DO complain about the steering wheel, don't they? See Google's self-driving car.

  Monster science
Monster science is the equivalent of monster trucks.



A real 1940 Ford business coupe developed organically from a horse-drawn cart. (Ford's chassis was much closer to a cart than GM's 'modern' suspension systems, but it worked and lasted!) A business coupe is a vehicle with a specific PURPOSE. It is purely UTILITARIAN. It serves traveling salesmen or traveling repairmen who need to cover long distances in relative comfort while carrying lots of samples or tools. It is explicitly NOT FLASHY, because part of a salesman's message is that his company is efficient and respectable.

A monster truck CLAIMS to be a 1940 Ford business coupe. In fact it has EXACTLY ZERO connection to Fords or coupes or carts. It's a strange hydraulic contraption built solely to impress beer-soaked audiences. The thing on top is an empty fiberglass shell designed to give the impression of a Ford. It's all flash and no substance.

A real science developed organically from normal life and business. A real science is a discipline with a specific PURPOSE. It is meant to PRODUCE useful devices or useful techniques. It is explicitly NOT FLASHY, because part of a true discipline's message is that the process is efficient and respectable.

A monster science CLAIMS to have a foundation. It CLAIMS to be standing on the shoulders of giants. In fact the foundation is an empty shell of totally insane pseudotheories, standing on top of a bizarre contraption built solely to impress money-soaked agencies and to soak up lots of their money. It does not yield any useful techniques or products. Worse, it often yields MURDEROUS techniques and EVIL products.

  Coulda hada automatic ... in 1905.
I've always been puzzled by the universality of the sliding-gear transmission when better alternatives were available first. Ford had a vastly superior planetary system in 1908, then gave it up and joined the crashbox crowd in 1928.

But wait! That's not all! Sturtevant made a car with a fully automatic 3-speed in 1905. It appears that Sturtevant was more interested in franchising its automatic than making a complete car, but neither side of the business went anywhere. Disappeared from history. Why?

I've done a half-assed animation by screwing with the actual diagram. The animation starts in neutral, goes through 1st then 2nd then stays in 3rd for a few seconds.

The flywheel (bright green, letter A) carries the centrifugal weights (letter J) around with it. At idle, none of the clutches are engaged. As motor speed increases, the weights move out, pushing the wedges forward. The wedges pinch a clutch disk for first gear (blue, letter H) against its friction surface on the flywheel. As speed increases more, the weights go out more, and pinch the second gear clutch (dark green, G) and finally the high gear clutch (orange, letter F). Each clutch has its own concentric shaft leading to its own gear train.

What happens after that is pretty much like a typical constant-mesh three speed, with one big exception. When in second, clutches 1 and 2 are both turning their gears. When in high, all three clutches are turning their gears. This would grind everything to powder, EXCEPT that the end stage of each gear train has a free-wheeling ratchet. When the final driveshaft is moving faster than the endpoint of the first-gear train, the first-gear train disengages. Same for second gear when third is engaged.

According to the writeup in Horseless Age, it worked nicely. You simply pushed on the throttle and each gear came in when it was needed.

Sturtevant even provided a D2 range for passing or hilly situations where you needed to get higher on the engine's power curve without dropping into third. GM didn't get around to D2 until the mid-50s.

Later: I can see one problem with the basic concept. It's a problem that may not have emerged with the relatively inflexible engines of 1905. You don't want gear selection to depend mainly on engine RPM; you want it to depend primarily on the car's road speed, weighted somewhat by throttle position. This could have been solved by adding a couple more centrifugal governors. Certainly possible with 1905 technology.

Purely subjective but firm. After four consecutive SHARP-EDGED season changes, this change from summer to fall is more gradual and sinusoidal. I'm sure there's no way to graph this difference properly, and it may not exist at all ... but the distinction is clear to my inner season-sensing feature detector.

Haven't taken note of a shared lie in quite a while.

Simple shared lies are statements like "Bush is a cowboy who always goes to war alone" or "Fox News is a right-wing network." The statement is false, but both "sides" agree with it for their own purposes, with opposite emotional connections.

This one is more complicated. The statement is false. One side agrees with it for its own purposes, and the other side wishes it were true for its own purposes.

Even if it were true, it still wouldn't be true.

Basic statement is the old Tocqueville thing about largesse, modernized to the 47% meme. In simple language, "Providing welfare to the masses is the best way to get votes."

All Randian yappers (Rush and acolytes) constantly quote the largesse thing, and constantly run the 47% meme.

If this were true, any politician or party who increases benefits should be in office forever, and any politician who decreases benefits should be tossed out quickly. I've already disproved this notion with plain old history. Politicians continue to act like it's true, continue to promise or provide more benefits, but it doesn't help them.

Now we have the wishful lie from the other side. The Vox website reviews Linda Tirado's book on the costliness of poverty. Most of it is powerfully true and valid. When you're poor you can't make long-term decisions, can't form shock-absorbing cushions of money or property, can't hire bullies (lawyers, insurance companies) to take your side against other bullies (lawyers, insurance companies, banks, hospitals). Every expense and problem crashes head-on into your life, knocking you backwards. You continually fall behind in every literal and metaphorical sense.

But when the author tries to find a bright spot in "civic engagement", she goes wrong.

I think that's utopia — full participation. And that would be great, because if we had full part we'd have policies that reflect the actual nation, et cetera, et cetera. Everybody knows the argument. The trouble is you can do as many [get out the vote] programs as you want to, but until [low-income Americans] start feeling like they have some connection to the people that are in authority over them, until they stop feeling like they're condescended to, until they start feeling like anybody actually gives a shit about what they're saying or hears their voice, you're not going to see anybody come out to vote.

You're literally asking us to please take time off work, reschedule our days, figure out what to do with our kids, so that we can go possibly wait in line for five minutes, maybe for seven hours, nobody really knows.

Unfortunately delusional. The 47% thing doesn't work now, and it wouldn't work if you tried it.

Politicians at all levels are already fully locked into their sources of money. Their input jacks are fully saturated. Other inputs (e.g. this peculiar vaporware called "voting", whatever the fuck that might mean) cannot enter.

On the federal level all inputs come from the Jew casinos (Goldman, Morgan, etc). On the state level all inputs come from Italian or Indian casinos. On the city level all inputs come directly from Michael Bloomberg himself. No politician can get anywhere near an office unless he's plugged into the correct input for his desired level.

Unless the poor can become a casino, or become Michael Bloomberg, they have no chance of "civic engagement". The former is at least theoretically possible through crowdfunding; the latter is physically impossible because Michael Bloomberg already occupies the body of Michael Bloomberg. "Civic engagement" for anyone else is a myth. All the gears are engaged.

  Wild question
This is a completely loose question. Nowhere near a hypothesis. More like a "Hmm. That's odd. I wonder if...."

Was listening to BBC interview with some young journalist type who was describing her struggles with suicidal urges. She was, of course, speaking in glottal fry and using carefully limited vocabulary.

Youngsters who have gotten locked into bad thought patterns always talk in glottal fry. That's not the question. It's an obvious correlation.

Glottal fry and careful word choice are two types of self-censorship, acoustic and lexical respectively.

I remember my own hippieshit days. Glottal fry wasn't a fad then, but the same word-choice syndrome was present. When I was talking with an adult about political matters, I always chose my words carefully.

Important point: This is not fearful self-censorship. This is arrogant self-censorship. I did not want to sully the Party-code words by letting them enter the unwashed ears of a fascist.

Glottal fry is the same thing on an acoustic level. This journalist doesn't want to sully her full voice by letting it enter the unwashed ears of fascists.

Now. Here's the wild question.

Does this correlation work both ways? By speaking in self-retracted modes, both lexically and acoustically, are you causing your self to retract?

Or putting it much more simply: Full-voiced people, even annoyingly LOUD people, do not commit suicide. Can you break out of a downward spiral by talking loud and firm? By sounding authoritative?

In the mid-17th century, the leader of Russia’s Orthodox Church, Patriarch Nikon, introduced radical reforms in Russia. Many couldn’t accept the changes and became known as “Old Believers”. To avoid religious persecution first from the Orthodox Church and then from the Soviets, families fled to some of the most remote corners of the world. In 1978, one such family was discovered by a group of geologists in the remote Russian Republic of Khakassia, Siberia. The Lykovs looked as if they belonged to a previous century: they dressed in homespun clothes and used primitive instruments in their everyday life. They were completely self-sufficient and still highly religious.

Today, Agafia, 70, is the last surviving member of this family. She is in desperate need of a helper. The filmmakers encourage her to write a letter to Old Believers everywhere in an attempt to find one. This letter, written in Old Slavonic language, is here.

Standing out from the crowd is clearly important to this flamboyant motorist. This gold Lamborghini Aventador Roadster has been spotted cruising around the French capital during Paris Fashion Week. The supercar was snapped outside the five-star Plaza Athenee palace hotel on the luxury Avenue Montaigne.

It is reportedly worth £4 million and plated in gold leaf, although cynics suggest the car has just been wrapped in the eye-catching material.

  Bad charter #2.
At first I wondered why Satan dba Teachers Union allowed the Spokane school board to approve charters at all. After hearing details of the first charter, I understood.

The first charter, Pride Prep, is blatantly and obviously Satanic. Its founder makes her evil purposes perfectly clear, provided you know how to read the jargon.

The second one, approved last night, is less obviously evil, but its purpose is at least dubious:

Spokane International Academy proposed a K-8 school. The school will have a strong internationally recognized curriculum; all students will learn English as well as a second language. The students also will partner with community organizations to give students service learning opportunities, according to the charter’s application. At the end of eighth grade, students will be taken on a teacher-led educational excursion. Franklin hopes to engage low-income children as well as the refugee population, he said.

Pulling in refugees is good. Public schools in America were originally designed to assimilate the heavy load of Euro refugees in 1910. But this school appears to be aimed in the other direction. Disassimilate the refugees and train low-income Americans to be community organizers and internationalists.

I don't see anything about job training or job readiness, which are the only proper justifications for a public school. Maybe it's there, but it's not in the announcement.

  Why didn't this become standard?


Ad in a 1921 radio trade journal. Note the 'self-polarizing' feature. It's easy enough to see how it would be done. Leave the main relay open at startup. Use a small rectifier in each direction to detect voltage coming from the battery. Energize a crossover relay from these small rectifiers, and energize main relay only after determining the polarity. (Solid-state rectifiers were already common in 1921, even though solid-state triodes were several decades away.)

I couldn't find a patent from that era, but this 1961 patent using transistors shows the probable technique. The jaws of each clamp are electrically separate. The top jaw of each goes via a separate coaxial wire to the sensing circuit, which is thus able to do its job of energizing the relays from the battery before power is available through the relays.

Why didn't this feature become standard, even mandatory, in auto battery chargers? It would have prevented a whole lot of fires and failures. Why isn't it part of jumper cables? You wouldn't need a separate power source, just a sort of snap-switch reversing relay similar to a circuit breaker. (Come to think of it, just a plain circuit breaker in each wire would do. If it snaps, you know you were backwards.)

Part 2, so to speak. I got curious to see if this trick was standard in Nature. The nearest analogy seemed to be nerve axons seeking dendrites to 'charge'. Do axons have separate coaxial sensor circuits to find the right 'polarity' of dendrites? (Here the 'polarity' would be more like excitatory vs inhibitory, not pos vs neg.)

Quickly found the answer. See here for nice diagram and explanation.

Axonal growth is a key mechanisms of neural circuit formation. In the developing brain, neuronal axons (and dendrites) grow out along reproducible paths via growth cones at their tips.

How do growth cones advance and navigate? Single splayed microtubules (MTs) push from the axon into the actin-rich periphery of growth cones, essentially powered by polymerisation processes at MT plus ends. Upon stabilisation, such MTs guide bulk elongation of axonal MTs, thus elongating the axon. External guidance cues influence the directionality of these events.

From other sources: These growth processes are constant and fast. Axons change shape noticeably within a minute or so.

Well, didn't really need to ask, did I? Nature is always there first. Endlessly astonishing.

BBC announcer is interviewing some supposed expert, asking why so many British youngsters are getting radicalized and joining ISIS or similar forces. Announcer appears to be genuinely puzzled, and the expert missed the best answer.

Best answer: "Do you really wanna know? You don't, of course, but if you did, you'd look in the mirror. Or more precisely you'd play back a tape of everything else you said in this hour."

Basic point: Civilization is supposed to protect normal people from criminals and threats. Civilization is supposed to open a path for normal people to live normal lives, to marry and work and raise kids.

When civilization does the exact opposite, normal people become radicals. They seek radical answers.

Before 1970 (or so), UK/US/EU civ was working well enough, so normal people weren't seeking extreme religious or ideological solutions. Sharia didn't look attractive.

Now UK/US/EU civ has taken the side of the criminals and threats in EVERY POSSIBLE WAY, as exemplified by most of what you hear on BBC or NBC or Fox.

UK/US/EU favors burglars and murderers, and prohibits normal people from defending themselves against burglars and murderers. UK/US/EU steals jobs from normal people and hands the jobs to normal people halfway around the world. UK/US/EU rips up dams and flood control systems, putting normal people underwater to "protect" some fucking earthworm. UK/US/EU favors wolves and grizzly bears, and intentionally places them next to houses and farms. UK/US/EU favors the superrich and prohibits normal people from even asking how the superrich are stealing more than everything. UK/US/EU steals money from normal people and uses it to make war in pointless places, thus guaranteeing that those pointless places will become real threats. UK/US/EU prohibits normal people from raising kids in normal ways. UK/US/EU forces normal people to accept and practice beliefs that wildly violate normal religions.

BBC announcer represents and propagates the most extreme and lethal insanity ever seen in these parts of the world. It's not surprising that normal people are responding in extreme ways.

  Mid-century lacuna
Been listening at bedtime to episodes of This is Your FBI from '45-'52. Just interesting enough to distract, not interesting enough to stay awake to the end. Good bedtime playlist material. The show was sponsored steadily by Equitable Life, which is still around under a different name.

Equitable carries strong positive memories. In my bookkeeping days, Equitable was the main insurer for the company. I got to know the agent and learned something about insurance from him. The same agent served our family well when an uncle committed a carefully ambiguous suicide to end the hell of alcohol. The agent quietly treated the suicide as a natural death. A less heroic agent would have followed the rules and left my uncle's family penniless.

These old Equitable ads featured a variety of different insurance and investment products. One of them was called "Independent 60s". Sounded interesting. Apparently a savings plan, intended to start in your 40s, helping you to stay on track toward a comfortable retirement. I don't need such a plan now, since I've reached a comfortable (semi)retirement through frugality, some wisdom, and lots of luck. Still, I was curious to see how Equitable had structured the plan. Might learn something useful.

Nothing at all on the web. Independent and 60s are common words but Equitable isn't. Searching for all three, plus variants on savings and retirement, led to a lot of odd academic stuff but nothing at all from Equitable itself.

As I expected. The web has a giant hole from 1923 to 1978. Within the gap, only scattered info and big events are represented on the web. Disney's privately purchased copyright law cuts in at '23 to cover Steamboat Willie. Sources like archive.org or books.google.com are full of goodies before '23 but end abruptly at Mickey's birthday. After 1978, the 'fullness of life' started to hit the internet directly through Compuserve, BBS's, Telnet, Uunet, etc. Many of those sources are still present behind a HTML shell, and most of the info got transferred to the HTML-style web anyway.

The lacuna was reinforced by the economic revolution of the '80s. Many corporations shredded their archives when they were forcibly LBO'd by Goldman or Morgan. In a world where SHARE VALUE IS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR, human capital and human memory must be obliterated.

Later, a semi-related observation. The ads for Equitable in this early '50s show talked in considerable detail about investing for retirement and investing toward other goals. Your Equitable agent was prepared to help with those affairs. (I state that as a fact because I know he was!) Comparing this discussion with what I hear now on 'money-talk' radio shows, one huge difference pops out. Current money-talk is ALL about evading taxes. That's the ONLY thing the callers want. They don't care about keeping their capital intact or getting the best return. ZERO TAXES ZERO TAXES ZERO TAXES is the only goal. These callers will work their asses off to save one penny in tax. None of that was present in the '50s discussion by Equitable. I've heard several dozen episodes of FBI, and the word TAX hasn't come up once.

If numbers and percentages were the prime concern, this comparison should be reversed. Income and capital gains taxes in the early '50s were HUGE, and current tax rates are super-low.

Must be something other than numbers, something that made upper-middle earners in the '50s relatively unconcerned about taxes while their modern counterparts have NO GOAL BUT ZERO TAXES ZERO TAXES ZERO TAXES. Is it just the decades of Reagan/Rush/Rand propaganda?

And much later, an explanation from one of those money-talk shows. Life insurance firms had been offering plans like this for a long time. The plans were hybrids of annuity plus life insurance, but they were consistently advertised as just plain life insurance. The annuity part was "additional life insurance protection." In fact they were tax-advantaged because IRS considers the interest on an annuity as taxable income but doesn't tax life insurance. The plans weren't advertised as tax-advantaged, but the agent would presumably show you the advantage. Finally IRS stopped these plans and required annuities to be clearly separated and advertised as such.

  Something good for once!
When government does something smart, I like to take note. This is an exceedingly easy task. I only have to do it every two or three years.

This smart action is small but still important.

The first initiative is a pilot program that will help entrepreneurs who want to renovate old buildings in Downtown Spokane. The city will foot the bill, up to $40,000 to upgrade the water and sewer lines into the building.

"We hope it will help small businesses like restaurants that want to go into spaces downtown, but go oh my gosh we have to upgrade these old pipes," Waldref said, "So we may not do it in downtown, they'll go somewhere else and do it."

The second initiative applies to the entire city of Spokane. People who want to renovate an old building and put apartments on the upper floors will no longer have to pay the residential sewer rate. Building owners would pay the much lower commercial rate.

Waldref says it's much cheaper for the city to build within than to keep expanding outward. "It's a lot cheaper to deliver service to a building in downtown Spokane than it is on the outskirts of town. We already have the infrastructure there, we're already pumping water to that area."

Amen and bravo. Infill is vastly more efficient than expanding the boundaries, especially when infill uses existing structures as well as existing land.

On this morning's walk I encountered a nearly naked runner. White male about 30, no shoes, no socks, no shirt, only bright green shorts. I'd call them boxers, but maybe they're an official athletic style.

I walk at fairly consistent times, so I recognize a 'regular crowd' of walkers and runners and bikers and cars. Never seen this dude before, at any time of day.

My own season-change response is much simpler. SLLLEEEEEEEEEPPPPPP! After 9 months of hard mental work, and after 4 months of hard heat plus two genuine disasters, I'm deeply tired. Work is continuing at a slower pace now, so I have days with no deadline. On those days I sleep 6 hrs at night plus 1.5 hrs in morning and 1.5 hrs in aft. All three 'shifts' are packed with complex dreams, indicating that the most important deficit was dreamtime.

Linguists tend to be accurate and clever observers and recorders of details. Linguists tend to be really dumb analysts. They constantly reach absurd conclusions.

Fine example here.

Summary: A unique hand-sign language has been observed in one Arab village in Israeli territory. This village has a lot of congenitally deaf people, and they have developed their own SL without any contact with existing mature SL's. Linguists noted that this language consists almost entirely of 'pure meaning'; each hand sign is a literal description of an object or action. It hasn't developed any tendency to economize on basic forms by combining or prefixing.

Reasonable conclusion: It's a young language in a restricted and simple environment. Pretty much the same thing as private twin-lingua. It hasn't spread to any outside adult learners so it hasn't needed any sort of rules or formalization.

Linguist conclusion:

To linguists, this is akin to finding a planet on which matter is made up of molecules that don’t decompose into atoms.

It’s not hard to imagine that things could have been otherwise. In principle, we could have a language in which sounds relate holistically to their meanings—a high-pitched yowl might mean “finger,” a guttural purr might mean “dark,” a yodel might mean “broccoli,” and so on. But there are stark advantages to duality of patterning. Try inventing a lexicon of tens of thousands of distinct noises, all of which are easily distinguished, and you will probably find yourself wishing you could simply re-use a few snippets of sound in varying arrangements.

As noted by Elizabeth Svoboda in the current issue of Nautilus, the dominant thinking until fairly recently was that universal linguistic properties reflect genetic predispositions. Under this view, duality of patterning is much like an opposable thumb: It evolved within our species because it was advantageous, and now exists as part of our genetic heritage. We are born expecting language to have duality of patterning.

You've got it backwards as usual. Even in sound-based languages, we aren't born expecting this atom/molecule structure. Babies expect every object AS CLASSIFIED BY BABIES to have its own symbol. As a kid grows beyond age 2, he slowly picks up a more refined CLASSIFICATION OF OBJECTS, and along with this refinement picks up the more refined set of terms.

The degree of atomization is a variable that depends on historical and geographical factors, not on linguistic basics. Compare English with German. English has a much larger set of unbreakable atoms because we decided to grab new words from elsewhere. Many of these unbreakable atoms were compounds in Greek or Latin, but because normal speakers don't know Greek and Latin the compound is felt as an indissoluble whole. German decided to keep a strictly limited set of native atoms, building new meanings with multiple layers of native prefixes and suffixes.

Linguists are making the same mistake that mathematicians make. Mathies believe falsely that all of math is 'built' from the atoms of set theory and number theory, because mathies have learned to analyze math into those atoms. In fact math was built from a natural sense of proportions and comparisons. Logarithms and percents are the real starting point. Set theory is an EXTREMELY recent development within an EXTREMELY NARROW set of weirdos, and has no connection to the way cultures or individuals develop math skills.

Some lit-crit fuckhead named Trotta has decided that science needs to break away from jargon if it wants to be understood. True but trite.

His solution to the problem is bizarre, weird, idiotic and purely fucking self-destructive. He thinks the road to clarity is to restrict your vocabulary to a few short words. If any real scientists are stupid enough to follow his example, they will succeed in being even less understandable than they are now. Several samples of Trotta's rawboned idiocy are here.

As I was reading about this idiocy, I was listening to an ad for a local auto repair service. The ad was voiced by the owner of the garage, who was clearly not college-educated, and was clearly talking to normal people about cars. He used universal, differential, constant velocity, and thousand several times in the ad. I will guaran-fucking-tee you that 100%, oops, I mean "ten tens out of ten tens of parts", of the audience, oops I mean "hear-group", understood him completely, oops I mean "picked up all of what he meant".

Long words are NOT THE SAME FUCKING THING as jargon. Long words are perfectly OK, provided you use their normal and accepted definition. Science writing goes wrong when it uses ordinary words in specialized ways. And that's EXACTLY what Trotta is doing, in spades. Oops, I mean "in sharp scoops on sticks, that are used to move or lift dirt."

But I really shouldn't be complaining. Trotta is supposedly trying to explain the Big Bang, Dark Energy, and Multiverses in his bizarre dialect. Since all of these "concepts" are purely insane nonsense, designed to create a "luminous intellectual fog" that will attract billions and billions and billions in funding to the laboratories of criminal fraudsters, it's highly appropriate that they are described in schizy language. Word salad deserves word salad.

  Aphid day!CANCEL PREVIOUS! 9-29 IS APHID DAY.
HOLD THE PRESSES! The last two years had featured a low Peak Aphid, causing me to lower my sensory threshold and mark the first appearance of a few aphids on 9/21. Today, 9/29, is back to the Aphids of Yesteryear in a massive way. Coating the face, coating the clothes, coating the groceries. I wonder if this correlates with the return to smooth season transition?


Finally got a picture. The bug is standing on the outside of the glass screen door, and I'm looking through the door. For reference, the bug including those dual ovipositors is about 1/2 inch long.

Birds are going wild grabbing the aphids. Right now I can see a dozen Default Brown Birds sitting on lilac branches, just waiting for bugs to hit the leaves. Seems like a lot of energy for literal slim pickings. I can also see a fat white butterfly and two slow bumblebees working the dandelions. Birds are ignoring them. Maybe the birds enjoy the fast-moving competition more than the easy eating.

Every year in Spokane the end of summer is marked by the swarming of tiny white-winged flies.

Insects don't waste much time in adulthood; lots of bugs live several years as larvae and only a few days as adults.

These flies take it to an extreme. Adults are minimally equipped to get in the air and reproduce. They don't have as much brain power as other flies, nor do they have hard shells. Instead of flying purposefully, they drift with the wind like seeds, and die as soon as they bump into anything even at near-zero drifting speed. Result: for a couple of days, your face and clothes are covered with semi-liquid insects.

Despite their lack of navigation, they must have some kind of superior instinct or 'community intelligence', because picking the last warm day is much harder than picking the first warm day of spring. Termites and ants don't need to calculate their swarming day; they only need a simple neuron to detect when temperature rises past a certain threshold, plus an emitted pheromone to trigger the avalanche.

But how do these flies determine that today is not just warm, but the last warmth for their generation? They must be sensing something besides temperature.

At any rate, they serve as a reliable sign for us, even if our supercomputers can't match their calculations.

Meanwhile, literally back at the ranch, a much older terrorist army is rapidly expanding. The EPA Terrorist Army has been making intense and LETHAL war against Americans since 1970. This is happening INSIDE AMERICA. RIGHT FUCKING HERE, IN OTHER FUCKING WORDS.

Everything that Hitler and Tojo dreamed about, EPA has accomplished. And more.

  Bhutan finds a niche
A few years ago I noted a sad but strange car accident involving some local immigrants from Bhutan. Several boys had been drinking and skidded their car into the river, then drowned because they didn't know how to get out. It seemed to exemplify an immigrant group that wasn't adapting well.

Since then, those Bhutanese have adapted nicely, have found their niche.

They're the housekeeping staff at upscale hotels, and they're obviously enjoying it.

Recent news item:

Red Lion Hotels corporate director of rooms operations Dominic Longo started the Housekeeping Olympics last year to mark International Housekeeping Week. This year’s event was held in the Red Lion Hotel at the Park.

“We just wanted to show appreciation,” Longo said. “It’s a lot of fun. They love it.”

The timed events included running a mop through a slalom course of yellow “wet floor” signs, vacuuming confetti dumped on the carpet and making a bed. In the floor buffer pad toss, one blindfolded teammate would toss the round red buffer pad to a partner who would attempt to catch the pad on the handle of a toilet bowl plunger.

The accompanying pictures tell the story better than the words. A group of odd-looking** young folks with odd names, enthusiastically running the wet-floor slalom and other events, and literally jumping for joy when they won.

The joy of competence, the joy of usefulness. The secret of a good life.

David Livingstone’s only known beetle specimens have been discovered at the Museum - 150 years after he brought them back from Africa. The specimens were unearthed by curators cataloguing and photographing the Museum’s collection for its online database.

The insects were donated to the Museum by a private collector, Edward Young Western, in 1924. He is thought to have bought them directly from a member of the Zambezi expedition. In the days before digital records, they got lost among the Museum’s 10 million beetle specimens and sat unnoticed for 90 years.

Before digital records?.... Digital databases can locate a record faster, provided the record is IN the database. But the process of creating records from actual specimens is still non-digital. So you can't credit digitality for the newly examined specimens.

Barclay said that the specimens are already shedding light on the effects of environmental change in the Zambezi region.

Oh? They're all extinct now?

Museum entomologist Hitoshi Takano recently led a number of expeditions retracing Dr Livingstone’s footsteps across Africa’s interior. During his travels he came across many of the same beetle species that Dr Livingstone spotted 150 years before.

No. They're nearly all the same. Facts and logic would lead you to conclude that conditions haven't changed much. But that's not what "scientists" conclude:

The fact that most of the same species can still be found in Zambezi today means that the environments in the area might have changed less than we expected. Or, against all odds, many species from Dr Livingstone’s day still remain despite 150 years of habitat destruction and deforestation.
