New parallel
Those Texas Democrats, chartered politicians in unchartered territory, were showing the standard elite arrogance. Violating the rules that they force the peasants to obey.

Now apparently some of them have "tested" positive for the Branded Virus.

Repoofs are appropriately schadenfreudisch.

I don't have any sympathy at all for the monstrous politicians, but the "news" about "testing" is absurd.

Before 2020 we weren't TESTING for a specific virus every day, so we wouldn’t have KNOWN OR CARED if somebody had a specific virus unless they were actually sick.

I've been hammering this point forever. For some reason today's hammer led to a broader parallel that I hadn't noticed before.

In the realms of speech and writing and religion, we accept some censorship of PHYSICAL ACTIONS. We understand that newspapers shouldn't be stirring up riots and wars (but in fact they do) and we understand that there's a line between insults and death threats. Religions can believe what they want, but shouldn't commit sexual or violent crimes as part of their belief.

In speech and religion we rigidly preserve the INTERNAL realm. A government shouldn't be able to discern what you're thinking, or force you to BELIEVE AND THINK the correct way.

Social media already crossed this line with constant MONITORING AND TESTING of thoughts. Even if you don't express an opinion, your movements and purchases and other expressions can be INTERPOLATED AND PREDICTED to form a virtual image of your forbidden opinion.

Constant TESTING for diseases before they appear is identical to censorship of THOUGHTS before they are expressed.

Everyone has improper thoughts which are NOT CAUSING VIOLENCE AND THEFT. Everyone has a whole pile of microbes which are NOT CAUSING SICKNESS.

We've broken through the internal barrier in both departments.

Carrying the metaphor another step:

Mental isolation and physical lockdowns are intended to BREAK IMMUNITY in both departments.

Normal face-to-face conversation gives us immunity to the worst thoughts. We can see that other people have the same bad thoughts, so we feel less alone. We can feel subtle pressures toward decent behavior, and develop our internal pressures from the examples. Laws and punishments are always needed for serious physical violations, but those actions are RARE in a functional civilization where everyone is useful and everyone knows their place.

Normal face-to-face contact gives us immunity to microbes. We encounter other microbes coming from other people, and our immune system distinguishes the new ones and develops a response. Our immune response is far more effective than government vaccination for the vast majority of microbes. Vaccinations are needed for a few severe viruses that kill large numbers of people before the immune system can get its act together.
