Quintessentially British
Vintage.es has a series of pix from a 1966 publicity event. 15 girls crammed into an Austin Mini. Not really amazing in terms of volume; skinny flexible youngsters can fold into tight spaces, and the Mini was surprisingly roomy inside like a Tardis. The amazing part was the weight. A small car is intended to hold 4 people and a little luggage, about
700 pounds. Those 15 average-size girls would weigh close to a ton. The Mini was loaded down but not broken.
What's British? A crowd of men is gathered around the Mini, and none of them are looking at the girls. Some are looking at the car, and most are looking at the other men. One group of men seems to be focused intently on a
picture of a man while leaning against the car full of girls.
