Following on the theme of treating a lie as a flat background assumption.
TechDirt is somewhat unusual among tech-monster websites. TechDirt is occasionally capable of objectivity, sometimes acknowledges that D and R are interchangeable pieces.
Not this time.
Headline:
Reality Winner Takes Plea Deal, Will Serve Five Years For Letting The Public Know About Russian Election Interference
The article is lamenting the "atrocity" of treating REALITY_WINNER as a spy. The "fact" of RUSSIAN_INTERFERENCE is automatic background, not needing explanation or emotion.
In fact REALITY_WINNER didn't "let the public know" about RUSSIAN_INTERFERENCE because (1) the public already "knew", and (2) RUSSIAN_INTERFERENCE does not exist.
You can't reveal secret facts about a myth.
A myth is the opposite of a secret, the opposite of a fact. It's a fabricated fiction that EVERYONE "knows".
The textual material released by REALITY_WINNER was nothing more than a copy-paste of the myth as narrated by MSNBC. The only real crime is copyright infringement. Rachel Maddow could sue REALITY_WINNER, but won't for obvious reasons.
CIA is actually angry at REALITY_WINNER because he/she revealed the ACTUAL SECRET FACT that "intelligence analysts" spend their days watching and transcribing Rachel Maddow, who in turn takes orders from CIA.
REALITY_WINNER clearly didn't understand that his/her daily work process was secret, because he/she had never encountered anything other than looped repetitions of fashionable lies.
