Congresscritter Lamar Smith is pleading for more funding to the giant ITER fusion project. Bad idea.
Smith presents the case for fusion neatly and completely, and fusion would certainly be better than fission as a source of steady energy.
BUT: We're already funding Lockheed, which has apparently
reached the goal of practical fusion through a new method of magnetic containment. Lockheed isn't quite producing and selling reactors yet, but they claim a usable ratio of input to output energy. They say production can start next year.
Why waste more money on a project that will NEVER get anywhere, when we're ALREADY spending money on a project that ALREADY reached the goal?
Feed the success and cancel the failure.
