Tractor tractor on the wall, who was the farmiest of all?
Last year I
reminisced about WIBW in Topeka, especially its agricultural programming. I guessed that WIBW might be the farmiest of all radio stations.
Not even close!
From a listing in 1959....
Here's part of the page around WIBW, showing 20 hours per week. (I had counted 28 hours from a specific WIBW schedule.) The wheat states didn't have the farmiest radio stations. In the wheat belt the most ag-oriented stations were all similar to WIBW at 20 hrs/wk.
Dixie had several stations around 40 hrs/wk, probably using a regional network. Huntington WV and Ashland Kentucky were tied for second:
The corn belt had the farmiest radio of all. Faribault Minn.
Clearly corn and cotton farmers were more interested in ag radio than wheat farmers.
