Are cartoons wrong?
Birds in cartoons and proverbs like to eat earthworms. This super-rainy month has provided a good chance to test the hypothesis. Almost every day has been rainy enough to force worms onto the street. Lots of worms, saliently wiggling.
Where are the birds? I see plenty of Default Brown Birds gathering in the trees and wires, gossiping and trash-talking as usual.
In dry weather I've often seen those birds congregating on the street to eat something that isn't visible from my viewpoint. Maybe seeds, maybe ants.
When the aphids swarm, I see those birds flying through the swarm and picking them off, even though the aphids look too small to be worth the energy of catching.
But I haven't seen any birds eating those nice fat worms.
