Trump is Toyota
Terrible analogy because you can't buy your own president unless the Voters Who Count, the 700 Cool People in Florida, also buy him. You
can try out and buy a car without waiting for the 700 Buyers Who Count to buy it first ... but an unapproved car won't be available very long anyway.
Leaving that aside, the historical parallels are striking.
I'm going to use the word
wantneed to denote what you want
after you've figured out that most of what you originally wanted was impossible fantasies induced by media and culture.
What do Americans
wantneed in a car? Roomy, reliable, repairable. Detroit had been giving us what we wantneed in the early '50s, then Detroit decided to satisfy the fantasies of its executives. By 1958, Americans hated what Detroit offered. There were alternatives. Best was Rambler. GM ignored Rambler because Rambler buyers were totally square. VW was also becoming popular. The people who bought VWs were unorthodox but COOL, so GM decided to answer VW with Corvair. Stupid. Corvair didn't satisfy wantneeds. Detroit continued to get stupider and stupider, making worse and worse cars that were explicitly intended to PUNISH squares. Finally Toyota came along in the mid-70s with a deadly serious car for squares, breaking all the union and corporate rules. Toyota STOMPED all over Detroit's profits. This caught their notice at last, and they started to provide real answers.
What do Americans
wantneed in a president? Protect us from invaders, protect us from feral capitalists, treat us like adults, build and maintain roads and dams. Ike was the last president who gave us what we wantneed. After Ike, DC switched to satisfying the fantasies of its intellectual elite. There were alternative products at various times. Wallace in '68 appealed to squares in one part of the country, Perot in '92 appealed to squares with a particular personality. DC managed to silence both. Wallace with a bullet, Perot with the standard crazification techniques. DC continued to get stupider and stupider, making worse and worse decisions that were explicitly intended to PUNISH squares. Finally Trump came along in the mid-10s with a deadly serious set of square solutions, breaking all the union and corporate rules. Trump is STOMPING all over DC's poll ratings.
Will he catch DC's notice? Will they start to provide real answers? No, but we can pretend.
