Minimum alternate universe
When I remember a dream it's generally a complex well-plotted story, with original people and locations, and meaningful actions and dialog. I wish I could develop such high-level creativity in waking. There are times when I could use some damn originality. Doesn't work that way.
Occasionally a dream will run the other direction, like the dream in today's afternoon nap.
I opened the actual door of my actual house, reached into the actual mailbox, found the usual set of actual mail. Val-Pak ads, utility bill, a couple of those big sharp-edged cards from political candidates. Struggled to pry those stiff cards off the back of the mailbox as usual, took the mail in, put the utility bill on the desk, put the rest in wastebasket.
Then I stopped to think: But wait! This is Columbus Day! No mail on Columbus Day!
Minimum alternate universe. Identical to actual reality except that the post office forgot today was a federal holiday. Which is actually possible, since Columbus Day is fading fast, only observed at the margins. Given the workings of the
opt-in / opt-out principle, a local PO that decided to deliver on Firsts Nationses Indigenouses Peopleses Dayses would be lauded, not punished.
