Why Who?
Scanning through recent items here, it's obvious that I'm focusing a lot on Tardises and Daleks. Not sure where it's coming from. Haven't watched any actual Who clips on TV or Youtube in many years, haven't even seen any references to the show in news.
In a deep sense I'm
misusing these symbols because the BBC writers of Who were emphatically on the other side of all issues. Old Doc was always fighting
against traditional rules, common sense, and Real Science. I need to find other metaphors!
Even deeper: Probably no solution. Nearly all competent writers and artists and "journalists" are on the other side in recent decades. All broadly understood symbols and words, all units of
cultural currency, are firmly owned by the dominant side. If you want a word or metaphor to serve the heretical side, you have two choices. Either use the currency with
constant disclaimers, which gets tiresome, or invent new symbols, which will inevitably be obscure. As I've already noted,
semantic secession doesn't work very well.
For instance: I'd like to answer the constant hammering of
denialist with
actualist. An instantly understandable word that gets the point across and isn't already claimed. For Euros,
actualist rings the idea of 'observing present reality' along with the US resonance of 'simple fact'. But no point in trying. I'm a
denialist, so anything I say can and will be used against me.
