Headline: Scientists have come up with a solution to soaring demand for protein and it's INSECTS.
This is really really dumb.
China is where the "soaring demand for protein" is happening.
What Chinese demand is BEEF. They do not demand beef because it's protein. Chinese already have lots of protein in their diet, from beans to eggs to chicken. They demand beef because it's BEEF. You aren't going to substitute insects for cows because insects are not cows.
It's unquestionably true that cattle are an inefficient use of resources.
A better solution is to persuade more people that you can get along just fine without
killing animals. You
can't get along just fine without
exploiting animals for milk and eggs. Without dairy products and eggs you have to spend entirely too much time and effort on food, and the results are unsatisfactory.
You can apply a similar rule with plants. As long as you eat only flowers and nuts and fruits, not roots, you're exploiting the plants but not killing them. You're taking the parts that the plants
want you to take, though arguably you're cheating Nature's purposes by pooping the seeds into a sewage system instead of the ground.
(I've been following both of these rules since I started learning about the astounding intelligence of plants.)
