Self-overrated raters of self-overrated experts
BBC is interviewing a "scientist" about a
"study" by Dunning and Rosenzweig at Cornell. The "study" supposedly shows that experts, or people who believe themselves to be experts, overrate their own knowledge. Example given: the study presented a list of topics to a self-appointed expert on biology. The expert was asked to rate his own knowledge on each topic. Most of those topics were real, a few were completely made up.
The interviewed "scientist" mentioned her favorite made-up topic:
"One term that I especially like is
the retroflex."
Well, fucking fuckhead,
retroflex is
NOT MADE UP. It belongs inside the topic of biology. Retroflex describes sounds made with the tip of the tongue pulled up and slightly back. In standard midwest American English, /r/ is made in a retroflex position. Many Oriental languages have a retroflex flip that gets written as both r and l, accounting for the common Oriental confusions of those two sounds.
I know quite a bit about retroflex, and if asked, I'd rate my knowledge 7 out of 10.
But you fuckheads would consider me to be a faker, because
YOU ARE OVERRATING YOUR OWN NONEXISTENT "KNOWLEDGE". YOU PICKED A TERM THAT CORRECTLY BELONGS IN BIOLOGY AND YOU CALLED IT "MADE UP".
I didn't have to Google retroflex because I ACTUALLY KNOW SOMETHING about phonetics ... but you COULD have Googled it.
YOU DIDN'T FUCKING BOTHER because you were
completely fucking certain about your own fucking false non-existent "knowledge". Arrogant ignorant monsters.
In a meta way this proves the original point, which didn't really need any proving. It also invalidates the "study".
