In refreshing contrast to Obama's Orwellian reversal of the word Nationalist, the Scottish Nationalist Party understands the word perfectly!
Especially interesting because there's no direct ethnic tie between Scots and Scandinavians; instead the cultural bond among Northern types is the Elective Affinity that draws them together.
You can see a similar affinity within US. Vermont and Maine tend to have the same character and do the same things as North Dakota and Minnesota. There's very little ethnic connection. Vermont and Maine are mainly English and Scots, while ND and MN are mainly Scandinavian and German. The commonality arises from the removal of warmth-loving people (African and Mediterranean types). Only the cold-loving people remain, and cold-lovers are cautious and frugal. ¶ 5:37 AM
Senior SNP strategists are compiling a "prospectus for independence" which they hope to use to sell the idea of separation to Scots ahead of the referendum in 2014 or 2015.
They reveal that SNP leaders want an independent Scotland to look north and east in Europe for partnerships, trade and key defence relationships, rather than continuing to focus on western Europe and the Commonwealth, as the UK does now.
Senior Nationalists, including Alex Salmond, have made several trips to Scandinavia over the last couple of years, meeting ministers and officials in an attempt to pave the way for greater co-operation if Scotland becomes independent, particularly on energy. Indeed, initial plans have already been drawn up for an electricity super-grid between Scotland and Norway.
