What's wrong with this picture?
Twice a month or so, I have a superficial conversation with an older lady, whenever we happen to coincide at the Safeway bus stop. Previously we just discussed the weather, the bus service, and other easy topics.
Today she very hesitantly opened the subject of the war; when she found that I was pro-Israel, she seemed relieved, and we proceeded to hold a miniature pep rally for Israel against the Arabs. Her attitude is:
"Those poor Israelis just want to have a normal life, and they've had to take constant harrassment from those Arabs. I say hit back, and hit 'em hard!"
She said that she was afraid to speak out on this side, because most of the people she talks with are anti-Israel. Now I know Spokane has this reputation for being a center of skinheads and Aryans and such; that stereotype is just as misplaced as the idea that Spokane is rainy and foggy like Seattle. Even if Aryans were common here, I seriously doubt that this lady would encounter them in her daily routine. She's a retired teacher, so I'd guess most of her associates are Democrats.
What's wrong with this picture? An older lady has to be afraid to speak out in favor of our own side?
