Optimistic Annie part I
-----
With huge apologies to the ghost of Harold Gray, and not just for my atrocious art. Orphan Annie has a solid reputation as a simple-minded and naive strip, and the version I remember reading in the '60s (probably after Gray died) certainly verified that reputation. So I based this parody on the standard stereotype.
But when I googled some of the original strips to check on Polistra's costume, I found that Gray's own writing back in the '40s was astonishingly sharp, subtle, literate and (in today's terminology) libertarian. Something like South Park edited by Bill Buckley. If this surprises you as much as it did me, check out
these two online examples! We need a comic strip like the original Annie, and we need it badly!
