1938 notes
The 1938 theme, permeating the pro-civilization end of the Blogworld, is beginning to show up on the major media. Victor Davis Hanson appeared on Fox this morning to voice the idea, with an interesting turn of phrase. He said approximately:
"Some American leader will have to explain this situation and tell Americans that we are in for a rough patch of sacrifice if we're going to get through this."
Some American leader. Hanson could have said "The President must explain..." but he didn't. Hanson clearly realizes that, as mathematicians would put it, the element
Bush is not contained in the set
American Leaders.-----
Here's a five-minute speech by FDR in September 1939, just after Chamberlain declared Britain was at war with Germany. (Churchill didn't take over until June 1940.)
FDR
was an element of the set
American Leaders.

Another observation: Hezbollah is no longer fighting in the Jihadi style. No suicide bombers. They're letting unmanned drones do the Kamikaze strikes on Israeli ships. This is definitely an old-fashioned war between nations now.
