  Lyrical hardass

Imaginative Conservative features an 1845 poem by Poe, a lyrical and HARDASS imprecatory curse against Science. Apt and prophetic.

Poe's name-dropping of old gods reminded me of this passage from Michelet's 1904 history of the Inquisition and witch hunts.

This comes shortly after the account of a peasant's life that I cited last week.
But is she so plain, this little peasant wife, whose dreaming imagination feeds on all these fancies? I have described her life, how she keeps house, how she spins as she watches her sheep, how she trips to the forest and gathers her little bundle of firewood. No very hard work is hers as yet; she is not the repulsive-looking countrywoman of a later time, disfigured by unremitting labour in the wheat fields. Neither is she the heavy citizen's dame, fat and indolent, of the towns, who formed the subject of so many appetising stories amongst our forefathers.

Our heroine is timid, and has no sense of security ; soft and gentle, she is conscious of being in God's hand. On the mountain crag she sees the black and lowering castle, whence a thousand dangers may at any moment descend. She fears and honours her husband; a serf elsewhere, by her side he is a king.

All innocence as the woman is, still she has a secret — we have said so before — a secret she never, never confesses at church. She carries shut within her breast a fond remembrance of the poor ancient gods now fallen to the estate of spirits, and a feeling of compassion for them. For do not for an instant suppose, because they are gods, they are exempt from pain and suffering. Lodged in rocks, in the trunks of oaks, they are very unhappy in winter. They greatly love heat, and prowl round the houses; they have been surprised in stables, warming themselves beside the cattle. Having no more incense, no more victims, poor things, they sometimes take some of the housewife's milk. She, good managing soul, does not stint her husband, but diminishes her own portion, and when evening comes, leaves a little cream behind in the bowl.

These spirits, which no longer appear except by night, sadly regret their exile from the day, and are eager for lights. At nightfall the goodwife hardens her heart and sallies out fearfully, bearing a humble taper to the great oak where they dwell, or the mysterious pool whose surface will double the flame in its dark mirror to cheer the unhappy outlaws.
It wasn't just Science that killed the old Natural deities. It was first the theoretical religion of Christianity that broke our ties to reality, making it vastly easier for the Enlightenment to cram us full of abstract delusions that enrich the priests and popes and bankers while killing the souls and bodies of the peasants.

Note also that Michelet recognized the comparative ease of peasant life versus the endless labor of industrial farming and industrial production. US and UK historians were handing us the vicious myth of peasant hardship, but French historians weren't fooled. More recent US and UK historians have recovered Michelet's view.

Reprint on emerging vs settled science

Time for a reprint from 14 fucking hellish months ago. This particular distinction seems to be coming up again. I had a rare clear thought on the subject in June 2020.

= = = = = START FUCKING REPRINT:

It's been clear from the start of the "virus" coup that the Public Death Officers are doing ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING to eliminate immunity. They know how it really works, so they don't miss a trick in their wicked use of their own skills for mass murder.

I just noticed a sneaky verbal trick.

Counting "cases" or "infections" is an explicit reversal of real knowledge and science. In fact an "infection" is an INOCULATION.

When a basically healthy person encounters a virus, the immune system reads the particle, checks against its intelligent knowledge of existing immunities, and sends some T-cells to eject the invader. The system then adds this virus to its library of known enemies. This is INOCULATION. Vaccines are extra inoculations, helping us to encounter viruses early. We formerly understood this as part of regular scientific literacy.

From Jules Michelet's 1904 book on the inquisitors and witch hunters:
The method is everywhere identical. Good common sense first of all, followed by a direct frontal attack, a downright, unhesitating negation of common sense. It would seem natural enough, for instance, to say that, love being in the soul already, it is hardly necessary to assume the mysterious intervention of the Evil One to be required. Is not this fairly self-evident? Not so, says Sprenger.
By redefining INOCULATION as a bad thing, the Public Death Officers have redefined immunity itself as a bad thing.

Immunity is the new cancer.

= = = = =

Another word trick is EMERGING SCIENCE. Central Death Command now claims that masks are proved by EMERGING SCIENCE. In the former extinct world of REAL science, EMERGING science was called by another word. EMERGING science used to be called PSEUDOSCIENCE. When 300 years of experience have led consistently to a solid conclusion about a fact or procedure, a sudden new contrary claim REQUIRES EXTRAORDINARY PROOF, as old Sagan used to say. I'm sure he's an Unperson now.

We can certainly examine the contrary claim. Occasionally a new claim turns out to be right when exploring unfamiliar territory. In this case we know for sure that it's wrong, because viruses are thoroughly familiar. In either case we CAN'T use the contrary claim as the basis for policy or medical practice unless and until it's proved just as solidly as the older belief. Especially when the policy is murder, and especially when the monsters who are pushing the new claim are holocaustal psychopaths.

But now we must ruin our own immunity because EMERGING SCIENCE.

This fits the Michelet pattern. Before the "virus" coup, the "global warming" coup simply lied about the validity of their pseudoscience. They called their pseudoscience "settled science" to imply that it was just like the real conclusions of real science. The new use of EMERGING SCIENCE openly admits that the pseudoscience is fake by all normal standards of real science. The open admission is part of the murder. It's AGGRESSIVELY UNFAIR, intentionally GRINDING OUR FACES IN SHIT to prove that the psychopaths have TOTAL CONTROL OF OUR MINDS. They openly BRAG that they're lying, and we can't do a fucking thing about it.

= = = = = END FUCKING REPRINT.

The key point is simple.

True is true no matter what you call it. False is false no matter what you call it.

If you call truth emerging, it's truth. If you call truth settled, it's truth.

If you call a lie emerging, it's a lie. If you call a lie settled, it's a lie.

  More Michelet

From Michelet's account of the Inquisitors and witch hunters.
I refer especially to the uncertainty in which the rustic household habitually lived as to its lot, the suspense, the chronic terror of the savage violence that might burst at any moment on their unoffending heads from the castle above.

The feudal regime involved precisely the two things of all others that go farthest to make a hell on earth; on the one hand, the extreme of immobility; the man was nailed to the soil, and emigration utterly impossible; on the other, a high degree of uncertainty as to the continuance of existing conditions.

So much is bound to be paid to the Feudal Lord — but he can take all the rest too, if he likes. This is called in so many words the right of prehension. Work away, goodman! And while you are abroad in the fields, the dreaded troop from the heights may swoop down on your house and carry off what it pleases "for the service of the Seigneur."

No wonder, if you look at him, the fellow is gloomy over his furrow, and hangs his head!

Yes! and he is always like that, with anxious brow and heavy heart, like a man constantly expecting bad news. Is he pondering revenge? Not he; but two thoughts fill his mind, two anxieties trouble him alternately. The first, "In what condition will you find your house when you go back tonight?"

The other, "Ah! if only the clod I turn would let me see a treasure underneath! if the kind devil would give me wherewith to buy our freedom!"

  More Michelet

The latest videos from the Inquisition have the same pattern as previous clips of similar encounters.

The Public Death Officers are always led by a drab middle-aged "female" zombie, which chants its magic incantations constantly, reading the demonic catechism to the combustible heretic. Droning on and on behind the witch-protector muzzle, while the heretic either recants or drives out the zombies.

The zombies are inanimate objects. They move slowly and smoothly in unison like rocks in a mudslide, inexorably pushing pushing pushing, unstoppably chanting chanting chanting, unless they encounter serious resistance. After it's clear that the heretic will not recant, the zombies slowly and smoothly pull back and regroup for a more effective and violent charge next time.

Michelet described the earlier version:
To understand this better, read the accursed Registers still extant of the Inquisition, not in the extracts compiled by Llorente, Lamotte-Langon, etc., but in what is extant of the original Registers of Toulouse. Read them in their vapid sameness, their dismal aridity, their shocking unconscious savagery.

A few pages, and you are cold at heart, a cruel chill strikes home to the vitals. Death, death, always death, you feel it in every page. You are already in the tomb, or immured in a little chamber of stone with damp-stained walls. The happiest gate is death. The dreadful thing is the in pace. One word recurs continually, like a bell of horror tolled, and tolled again, to drive the dead in life into despair, — always the same word, Immured.

Dread apparatus for crushing and annihilating souls, cruel press for breaking hearts. The screw turns, and turns, till breath fails and the very bones crack.
Cold at heart. A cruel chill. Dread apparatus. The screw turns and turns.

  MIchelet again

Some people are still wondering why CDC publishes data that CONSISTENTLY AND OBVIOUSLY PROVES THIS IS NOT AN EPIDEMIC, and then "uses" the "data" to justify a holocaust. Don't they NOTICE the contradiction? Of course they NOTICE it. The contradiction is the weapon.

This isn't new.

Reprinting a piece from Michelet's incomparable 1904 essay on witch hunting.
Here lies Sprenger's real merit, which is beyond dispute. He is a fool, but an intrepid fool; boldly and unflinchingly he lays down the least acceptable doctrines. Another man would have tried to elude, attenuate, soften objections, —but this is not his way. Beginning on the first page, he sets down openly and displays one by one the natural, self-evident reasons there are for disbelieving the satanic miracles. This done, he adds coldly, "Merely so many heretic mistakes." And never pausing to refute the reasons given, he copies out the texts on the other side, St. Thomas Aquinas, the Bible, legends, canonists, and commentators. First he shows you what common sense has to say, then pulverises it by weight of authority.

The method is everywhere identical. Good common sense first of all, followed by a direct frontal attack, a downright, unhesitating negation of common sense.
The Sucker Filter and the Flat Assertion are the two ingredients of a witch hunt. When the two are compounded, you get Sprenger or Fauci.

  Sounds familiar somehow

More from Jules Michelet's 1904 book on the Inquisition.

How did the earlier large conspiracy (which is of course impossible, because Deepstate says it's impossible) keep its secrets?
These mysterious records were at Toulouse, and no doubt in all other cases, enclosed in bags suspended very high up on the walls, and, besides, sewn up on either margin in such a way that they could not be consulted without unstitching the whole. They afford us a valuable specimen, throwing precious light on all the Inquisitions throughout Europe, for the methods of procedure were everywhere precisely similar. What especially strikes one in these Registers is not merely the vast number of those punished, but the multitude of persons immured, shut up, that is to say, in a tiny stone cell, or in a dungeon in pace, on bread and water.

Another is the countless number of the Crozats, as they were called, who had to wear the red cross in breast and back. They were the best treated, and were allowed provisionally to live in their own houses.

Only every Sunday after Mass they had to go and be whipped by the Cure of their parish. The most cruel part, especially for women, was that the common people and children used to jeer them unmercifully. They were liable, apart from any fresh offence, to be taken into custody again and immured. Their sons and grandsons were always suspect, and very readily immured.

Sounds vaguely familiar. Can't quite place it.

  The scariest part....

A satanic demon named JOHN TILLSON writes a perfectly scary screech in Aeon.

Fortunately JOHN TILLSON is also grotesquely STUPID and has no fucking idea why his horrible idea won't work and can't work.

First the stupid part:
Consider the following case of what I call ‘knowledge insertion’ from The Matrix (1999). In the movie, the protagonist Neo discovers that the world as he knows it is a computer simulation designed to help enslave humanity. To free humanity, it (apparently) helps to know kung fu. While Neo doesn’t know any, he doesn’t need long to learn it. Via a computer cable plugged into the back of his skull, the martial art is downloaded into his mind, instantaneously making him an expert.

If you could, would you follow Neo’s example and ‘insert knowledge’ – or indeed any other valuable dispositions, such as character traits? After all, it’s not just knowledge that Neo has ‘inserted’, but the kung fu ability that the kung fu knowledge has enabled. In fact, there are many desirable states that can’t necessarily be reduced to ‘knowledge’ – such as being courageous, intelligent, creative, funny and athletic – but might be facilitated by it.
A skill is not a "state", whatever the fuck that means. A skill is a complex set of microprogrammed and FLEXIBLE responses to a physical process. Training involves a long and intentional interaction with the weapon or the hammer or the frying pan. Real trainers put the student through a controlled 'play' of the real process, deliberately creating the oddities or accidents that typically occur during the process, without the deadly consequences of real mistakes.

JOHN TILLSON goes on to examine how learning really happens, and relentlessly smashes every part of the process without ever saying why the real thing can't work. The real thing is bad because JOHN TILLSON SAYS SO, and that's all.

Michelet as usual:
Now the scary part, showing JOHN TILLSON'S real purpose, which is of course the same as Sprenger and Kremer:
Even if we dodge the threat of replacement by downloading a modest suite of knowledge at a suitably gentle pace, we might still worry that knowledge insertion would make us become someone we wouldn’t want to be. This isn’t always a problem. Suppose Neo was racist and wanted to stay racist. I’d say that losing his racism as an unexpected and unwanted side-effect of uploading kung fu would be objectively serendipitous.

Any antecedent hostility to becoming non-racist wouldn’t constitute a problem: it should be a welcome becoming.
A welcome becoming. Straight out of Comrade O'Brien.

Most of the commenters are just fussing about grammar points or definitions. One gets the difference between real experience and injected "states". None of them are bothered by the scary part. And that's the scariest part.

  Cinderella vs Booker T

Convective thought.

First, one unquestionable absolute truth.

All human traits and talents and tendencies are innate and permanent. Some traits are more strictly determined than others, but the initial condition is always permanent. You can't change your status or your skills or your likability.

In his strong and lyrical discussion of peasant life, Michelet sees the origin of fables like Cinderella and Ugly Duckling.
A very real and very genuine passion underlies it, that of her unhappy, quite hopeless love, one that cruel Nature often sows between pure souls of too widely separated ranks, the poignant regret of the peasant woman that she cannot make herself fair and desirable, to be loved of the knight; the stifled sighs of the serf, as looking down his furrow, he sees riding by on a white horse a too, too charming vision, the beautiful, the adored, mistress of the castle and the lands he tills. It is like the Eastern fable, the melancholy idyll of the impossible loves of the Rose and the Nightingale.

But there is one great difference; the bird and the flower are both beautiful, equal even in beauty. But here the inferior being, so low placed in the scale of rank, confesses humbly, "I am plain and homely, a monster of ugliness!" The pity of it ! . . . But all the same, with a persistency and a heroic power of will unknown to the East, and by the very ardour of his longing, he breaks through the silly obstacles in his way. He loves so truly he is loved in turn, this monster; and Love makes him beautiful.
Those fables may have been helpful in an era when your job was also predetermined and permanent. They're destructive in an era when jobs, and other ways of using your skills, are more flexible.

Unpopular people can't become more popular or respected, but they CAN seek indirect popularity for their products or services. This is the ONLY way to avoid total frustration and depression. If you are hoping for a miracle that makes you attractive or likable, you're bound to fail. If you try to provide respectable products or services, you have a good chance of success.

Even in the empathetic '30s, very few stories made this point. After WW2, raw meritocracy sponsored by Deepstate made the truth impossible to say or see. Every source tells us that riches and popularity are possible for everyone if you try hard enough. This is a DEADLY LIE.

Booker T Washington is the only celebrity who ever told the truth. He has been forgotten and canceled for a long time.

  Sounds familiar again

Michelet in 1904 again, here discussing the early days of the Christian racket.
Victorious Christianity, on the contrary, was fain to slaughter the enemy outright, and thought to do so. She abolished the Schools of Philosophy by her proscription of Logic and the physical extermination of the philosophers, who were massacred under the Emperor Valens. She destroyed or stripped the temples, and broke up the sacred images.

Thus Christianity deliberately entered on the lonely road of celibacy. And Monasticism helped it on the downward slope. Men fled to the desert; but they were not alone. The Devil went with them, ready with every form of temptation.

They must needs revolutionise society, found cities of solitaries. It was of no avail. Everyone has heard of the gloomy cities of anchorites that grew up in the Thebaid, of the turbulent, savage spirit that animated them, and of their murderous descents upon Alexandria. They declared they were possessed of the Devil, impelled by demons, and they told only the truth.

There was an enormous void arisen in Nature's plan. Who or what should fill it? The Christian Church is ready with an answer: The Demon, everywhere the Demon.

Greece no doubt, like all other countries, had had its energumens, men tormented, possessed by spirits. But the similarity is purely external and accidental, the resemblance more apparent than real. In the Thebaid it is no case of spirits either good or bad, but of the gloomy children of the pit, wilfully perverse and malignant. Everywhere, for years to come, these unhappy hypochondriacs are to be seen roaming the desert, full of self-loathing and self-horror.

I am not surprised at such a society turning mad and savage.

Furious to feel itself so weak against the demons, it pursues them everywhere, in the temples and altars of the old faith to begin with, later in the heathen martyrs. Festivals are abolished; for may they not be assemblages for idolatrous worship? Even the family is suspect; for might not the force of habit draw the household together round the old classic Lares? And why a family at all? The empire is an empire of monks.

Yet the individual man, isolated and struck silent as he is, still gazes at the skies, and in the heavenly host finds once more the old gods of his adoration.
" This is what causes the famines," the Emperor Theodosius declares, " and all the other scourges of the Empire," a terrible dictum that lets loose the blind rage of the fanatic populace on the heads of their inoffensive Pagan fellow-citizens. The Law blindly unchains all the savagery of mob-law.

= = = = =

Now compare with previous item. Am I an unhappy hypochondriac, trying to avoid inputs from the demons in charge of everything? Yes. I'm an anxious introvert, born and bred. But there's a difference in purpose. Aggression vs defense. The demons in charge are making war on the pagans, placing us in prison and proscribing our logic and science. The pagans are not trying to force the believers to change, not trying to tear down anything. We're only trying to survive and defend our own souls from the aggressive warlike believers. If we listen to the war propaganda, if we watch the false beacons, we will either join the war or crash on the rocks. We know what the propaganda says because it's impossible to avoid all of it. We have to be careful, have to focus on the permanent beacons of real Nature and prewar human nature.

  It's just Parkinson

Quora question:

Who are some people who the world thought were crazy, but were right all along?

Answers cite Wegener's idea of continental drift, saying "Revolutionary ideas are rarely accepted".

I hadn't stopped to think about it before. This answer is mostly backwards. Not entirely.

Drift is the opposite of crazy and revolutionary. It's OBVIOUS. Anyone can see it. Wegener was dismissed because geologists wanted NON-OBVIOUS theories.

Most of the time common sense is dismissed. The obvious is dismissed. Crazy and revolutionary and murderous ideas are REQUIRED.

A similar change in a closely related subject is Schiaparelli's OBSERVATION of rivers on Mars. For hundreds of years official science laughed at the claim. We KNOW that Mars doesn't have water, so it can't have rivers. How do we KNOW Mars doesn't have water? Because we KNOW that Schiaparelli was wrong.

A similar pattern happened in speech, with "competing" theories about the function of the larynx. The old idea was OBVIOUS, and the old idea was right. The larynx is like an oboe or saxophone. A column of air resonates, allowing a double reed to open and close with the variations of pressure. Bell described it clearly.

But this wasn't good enough for the scientists. They assumed that the larynx produced vibrations by direct muscular action, like a tapping finger.

The latter was OBVIOUSLY wrong, and you don't need fancy instruments to see why it was wrong. The larynx vibrates from 60 to 600 cycles in singing, and 150 to 300 cycles in normal speech. You can't even reach 20 cycles with a tapping finger, and 600 is OBVIOUSLY impossible. Muscles just don't move that fast.

Despite its OBVIOUS wrongness, the textbooks and teachers in the '70s were still treating both theories as competing and equally likely.

= = = = =

I'm tempted to cite Michelet on the psychopathic innovators yet again, but this problem is much simpler and more crassly Parkinsonian.

There's no profit in proving the obvious.

Proving a crazy idea takes HARD WORK and UNLIMITED WORK. The best part of proving a crazy idea is that you CAN'T GET THERE. So the budgets and authority must INCREASE FOREVER. It's a self-feeding pump.

= = = = =

Semi-relevant: Another Quora question mentions this quote:

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.

I hadn't heard this before. Concise and comprehensive. Parkinson in one sentence. Google credits it to Ernest Benn, a British political writer contemporary with Parkinson.

  Apologies to Jeffrey Tucker

The basic principle of science is

Don't trust. Verify.

Never take words as authority. Think in Science As Entertainment mode. When you see a science article, treat it as an advertisement or attention grabber. "Hey! Look at this! I've found something really neat!" If you also think it's neat, verify it by your own experience, or your own observations, or your own experiments if possible.

Carver as always:

LOOK ABOUT YOU.
TAKE HOLD OF THE THINGS THAT ARE HERE.
TALK TO THEM.
LET THEM TALK TO YOU.

When Jeffrey Tucker called attention to the Michael Lewis book on the holocaust, I was suspicious. Tucker cited one BIG FACT from the book, but seemed to dismiss the book as written from the wrong viewpoint. We need ALL THE FACTS, and if Lewis was bringing in a load of facts, his viewpoint shouldn't matter.

In 2020 I learned to follow Carver UNIVERSALLY, so I started with the hypothesis that Tucker was protecting his own turf.

Verify.

I bought the book (not from Amazon) and skimmed through it.

Tucker was exactly right, and I apologize for doubting him.

The book does have a few interesting facts, but it misses ALL the important points, totally ignores the inversion of science, and leaves out the 15 years of development between the 2005 initiative and the 2020 holocaust.

The book should have been titled

Why I am God

By Carter Mecher, as told to Michael Lewis.

Lewis doesn't know anything about science, so he didn't question or kick down any of the anti-science premises of the Mecher conspiracy.

Most notably, Mecher's plan was based on the notion that we fucked up the 1918 flu epidemic by NOT muzzling and NOT distancing and NOT lockdowning. We must get it right this time.

The facts instantly disprove this notion.

1. We tried all of those nasty tricks in 1918 and found that they didn't work. Our public health establishment was still operating IN science in 1918, and they were able to LEARN from experimental results.

2. The 1918 epidemic was a mix of virus and pneumococcus bacteria. Our scientists at the time didn't fully understand viruses, but they did fully understand bacteria, and they knew what they were seeing. MOST of the infections and deaths were from the bacteria. In 1918 WE DIDN'T HAVE ANTIBIOTICS against bacteria. Penicillin was discovered in 1928, and related antibiotics weren't really universal until WW2.

Fucking constants and fucking variables. The virus is a constant, but it wasn't the important factor in the 1918 deaths. The lockdown shit is a variable. It was tried AS A VARIABLE in 1918, and found to fail. After that, public health knew that lockdown shit didn't work. Bacteria, and defenses against bacteria, are two more variables. No bacteria in the 2020 illness, and even if the bacteria were present, we can handle them now.

Mecher deliberately skipped over those constants and variables and ASSERTED that lockdown shit would work this time, because Mecher said so.

Michelet as always:

It would seem natural enough, for instance, to say that, love being in the soul already, it is hardly necessary to assume the mysterious intervention of the Evil One to be required. Is not this fairly self-evident? Not so, says Sprenger.
