Surprisingly useful lesson
I like to watch '50s cop shows before bedtime. A nice escapist dose of actual justice, which was rare in real life then and totally extinct now.
This episode of 'The Detectives' just popped up on Youtube.
At first it looks like the usual Arthur Miller / Shirley Jackson shit, making thinly veiled references to Joe McCarthy and the Deplorables of the era. You expect the heroes to shame the Deplorables into total submission to Freud and Meritocracy. At the end the retarded superstitious Deplorables are warbling falsetto hymns of praise to Almighty Lady Edgar.
Nope. This episode sharply departs from the standard nonsense, with a useful lesson at the end. The writers recognize that healing is an important natural function, often accomplished through religious or superstitious methods. The writers also recognize that even Deplorables deserve to hear an
honest picture of reality.
In neurological terms,
placebo works even when you know it's placebo. Trust and confidence are the main ingredients of health and immunity.
