Non-barking NOW I SEE
Listening to old radio cop shows at bedtime as usual. One of the moralistic lectures in the intro said "Stop fighting crime for even one day, and crime will run rampant!"
Reminded me... At the start of the holocaust the cops stated that they would slow down enforcement of ordinary crimes, because they didn't want to endanger the criminals with the "virus" in jail.
The grotesque injustice was obvious, and even more obvious now that ordinary people are required to be bound and gagged if they want to eat. Prisons don't punish disobedience with starvation. I've been there and I know. [At first the injustice was
In Your Face. Now it's On Your Face.]
BUT: Ordinary criminals DIDN'T run rampant.
I assumed it would happen, but it hasn't happened. Reports of ordinary crime are about the same. Overdoses and public suicides have dramatically increased. Thefts and burglaries are the same, maybe even down from normal.
What's the explanation?
Two possibilities, both generally factual, not exclusive. Most likely both are contributing to the effect.
1.
Professional criminals are not psychopaths. Ordinary criminals have an INFINITELY better moral sense than governors and mayors and doctors. Criminals saw that everyone was in the same plight, and didn't want to make it worse. Regular murderers couldn't possibly compete with Mad Bomber Inslee and Demented Dominatrix Woodward. When the demonic monsters are killing millions, it's hard to impress anyone by killing one or two.
2. Null hypothesis. The enforcement BEFORE the holocaust wasn't stopping crime. Ordinary criminals were held for a few hours, then released to resume their careers. So the policy change didn't really change the reality.
