The BEST book on communication
Manual of Signals, 1866 by the Signal Corps. Covers the ENTIRE subject from perception to construction of codes to construction of devices. The parts about perception are remarkably accurate and complete. Nothing discovered in recent decades has invalidated any of this material. Invites the readers to experiment and invent their own alphabets and codes and systems, and gives many hints for how to do it. Anyone who is thinking about communication should read this.
