Waterfox wins!
Suddenly FF started pausing heavily at every step, then it removed several of my addons for no obvious reason. I checked to see if anyone was discussing this, and sure enough,
FF is playing the Security Theater game to the hilt. Addons that didn't keep up with the fake SSL "security" theater have been knocked off. Good old
Github = Room 101. Change the rules of the game every microsecond, and punish Deplorables who can't or won't keep up with the changes.
In the Reddit discussion one user said Waterfox is the solution. I found
waterfox.net and downloaded.
Instant satisfaction. All my old addons work without any special tricks, and all bookmarks and other preferences transferred without any effort. Waterfox behaves like FF 56, which was the last usable version, but also correctly handles some webpages that have "moved beyond" the CSS/HTML behavior of FF 56.
I pay for value, so the instant satisfaction generated an instant payment to Waterfox. The only trouble is that their donation page makes it HARD to donate, by using one of those "Where's Waldo" captcha things. The particular set of images worked this time, but usually they don't.
Hey Waterfox! You've got a wonderful product that people WANT to pay for. I was immediately willing to pay $50 to get out of the Deepstate claws of FF, but the limit is $25 and it's not easy to pay. Not smart to frustrate the happy customers! ... Later, I pushed through another (more difficult) "Where's Waldo" to contribute another $25. Still, you shouldn't have to do $25 worth of work to make a $25 donation!
