I was trying to untangle the electromechanical logic of this mechanism, with some help from the descriptive text.
Suddenly I noticed a MUCH more interesting aspect of the diagram. The wooden beams are shown as wood, not just gray or crosshatch; even more, the draftsman went to the trouble of giving each beam an individual
personality. Each is from a different section of a tree, with different grain patterns and different imperfections. A lumber expert could tell which type of sawing had produced each beam, just as a butcher could distinguish cuts of meat by their grain and fat patterns.
