The research team led by scientists from the University of Jyväskylä, the University of Eastern Finland, and the University of Bristol conducted a comprehensive literature review on the effects of Finnish sauna baths on health outcomes. Finnish sauna bathing is characterized by exposure to high environmental temperature (80 degrees C-100 degrees C) for a brief period. Findings from this comprehensive literature review also suggest that the health benefits of sauna bathing are linked to the effects of sauna on circulatory, respiratory, cardiovascular, and immune functions. Regular sauna bathing stabilizes the autonomic nervous system, reduces blood pressure, inflammation, oxidative stress, circulation of bad cholesterol, arterial stiffness, and vascular resistance. Moreover, sauna bathing contributes to beneficial levels of circulating hormones and other cardiovascular markers.Sounds wonderful! Think I'll build a backyard sauna and get all healthy and shit! Do I have a spare $10k laying around? Can I afford the lawyer to plead for a zoning variance? Can I afford the extra fire insurance and liability insurance? Doesn't matter! I'll take out a loan to get this wonderful set of health benefits! Oops, I didn't read the rest of the study. Better go on, just for completeness.....
The physiological responses produced by an ordinary sauna bath correspond to those produced by moderate- or high-intensity physical activity such as walking.Jesus. Why didn't you say that in the first place? This is a case where the classic null hypothesis would have provided a better writeup and a better headline. Better headline: Saunas have tremendous health benefits if you're rich and can't walk. Since I'm poor and walk two miles a day, I didn't need to waste time reading this shit.
