Dreams and kinesthesia
Random thought about the senses that are actually present in a dream.
Most of my dreams include exactly five situations:
1. Working on tech stuff in a team
2. Teaching tech stuff
3. Exploring interesting buildings and towns
4. Getting lost in unfriendly buildings and towns
5. Driving.
The first four obviously require sitting, standing, walking, and operating various things like soldering irons and doors... but those motions are only present
by implication. I never feel the kinesthetic details of sitting, walking, etc. The only sensory input in those dreams is visual and aural, with an occasional smell.
Driving is the only fully kinesthetic activity. All of the muscle senses of steering, shifting, clutching, and braking are present. Some shifts are easy and some bump into the synchronizer; sometimes the brakes fail and the pedal goes to the floor. It's a TOTAL experience.
This sharp distinction is even more puzzling because I haven't driven a car for 20 years. The other physical activities (sitting, standing, soldering, etc) are still part of daily or near-daily life.
Is the dream-scripter using a simulator to
maintain the skill of driving? Does it know that the other skills don't need refreshing?
