Dancing eardrums?
Latest item at KSHS is an odd one. It shows the winners of a
Marathon Radio Listening Contest in Topeka. Looks like about 1927. According to the sign, the Listeners were on display in the store's window for 24 hours. The winner received a free radio.
WIBW didn't broadcast 24 hours until the late '50s, so the after-midnight listening had to be DX, not always easy in '27.
The girls seem to be dressed for a marathon dance, not a marathon listen.
Listening isn't like the Charleston**. Your tympanic membranes are dancing 24 hours a day no matter what else you're doing. You don't need to soak your ears in Epsom Salts after listening for a long time.
I suppose the contest was really about displaying yourself in a store window for 24 hours.
