Think emoticons are new?
More goodies from
Inland Printer, 1895. A 'country weekly' on press day, showing a scene that hasn't changed much over the years despite feminist bigotry that wants us to believe otherwise.
The janitor, wearing a
sideways ball cap, clearly has an eye for the bustle. The editor appears to disapprove, but because the artist doesn't know how to draw
eyes or hands we can't quite tell what the editor is thinking. Lady compositor is standing on boards to reach correct height without stretching. Good practice then and now. You can see the meaning of uppercase and lowercase clearly. The upper part of the case (equilateral rectangles) was caps. Proofreader and copyholder-girl working together properly.
This one surprised me:
Emoonicons! (
More proof that the bread in those days must have been contaminated with ergot mold.)
