Or is it?
Even
in these conditions there are still some fucking idiots lighting firecrackers. Contributors to the
Spokane-News page tend to assume these explosions are gunshots and get scared, reasonably enough. .... Or is it reasonable?
In these conditions I'd rather hear a gunshot than a firecracker.
A gunshot injures or kills only one, and there's at least an
80% chance that the one deserves to be killed.
A firecracker could injure or kill thousands, and very few of those people deserve to be killed.
The mayor of West Richland has the right idea:
"Please seriously consider not discharging your fireworks until Dec. 31 when fireworks are legal for the New Year Celebration."
Would be a good state law. Make fireworks powerfully prohibited in July and strongly encouraged in winter. Instant death for lighting firecrackers in July, a big tax credit for buying fireworks in Dec or Jan. Of course you can still blow out your
own eyes or ears or fingers in the winter, but
that's good old Darwin. Self-administered justice to idiot, no harm to humans.
