Watching the Memory Hole in action
Local ABC radio gets a slice of time with ABC national correspondents each morning. In their slice this morning, Ann Compton was talking about the NATO meeting, and the comparative weakness of today's NATO.
"NATO was developed to guard against Russian tanks rushing across Europe, with memories of WW2."
Is that really what happened in WW2? Russian tanks rushing across Europe? Funny, I sort of halfway dimly vaguely remember a slightly different picture. I thought it was German tanks rushing across Europe to attack France and Russia, and German bombers rushing through the skies to attack England and Russia.
To recover a more realistic memory, let's go back to
Bob Taft in 1952:
"Either we have to assume that the Russians are not going to attack Western Europe, or we have to assume that they are. If they are not going to attack, then our buildup is unnecessary. If they are planning an attack, why should they bother to wait three years while we build up a great army to oppose them? They would attack now."
Logic. Same logic applies now, but nobody is capable of logic. Logic is a distant memory. All gone now. No thinking, no facts, no logic, no reason. Nothing left but the sound of an oh-so-exquisite ostrich-skin jackboot with
simply precious diamond-studded platinum cleats, stomping on a face forever. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Stomp.
