Orwell would love you, as always
From
UK Telegraph coverage of Yosemite forest fire:
"The fact that the fire is in a
protected national park means that bulldozers cannot be used to plough fire lines, and the areas around the rivers cannot be cleared. It is now approaching previously burnt areas, however, which should slow its progress, but it is expected to keep burning long after it is fully contained. Some 7,000 damaged trees next to power lines will need to be removed, and it will take years for the forest to recover. "
Hmm. Protected. Protected. Something just slightly ... out of phase ... or ever so slightly mistuned ... about the use of that word. I vaguely recall reading antique obsolete archaic definitions of
protected that seemed to imply ... no, no, no, obviously my memory is bad. We all know that
protecting means "guaranteeing total obliteration and destruction."
Please note. I am writing in a delicate and refined manner here because if I do not write in a delicate and refined manner I will start ROARING AND SCREECHING AND HAMMERING THE KEYBOARD TO PIECES AND SMASHING MY HAND THROUGH THE MONITOR AND BREAKING DOWN THE WALLS OF MY HOUSE. Those actions would be useless and pointless and would accomplish nothing but injury to myself and my property, so I choose instead to write delicately.
