One small victory for common sense
Polistra has been
following the Gaian Church's attempt to have the Giant White Spitting Lily-Scented Palouse Earthworm listed as an Endangered Species. If this worm were listed, agriculture in the Palouse region (which is highly profitable) would be extinct.
Amazingly, a Federal court has
decisively denied the Gaian petition, after several layers of appeal.
Evidence regarding the population of the giant Palouse earthworm is limited and inconclusive. The petition failed to identify a single well-designed study determining the current or historical population and range of the earthworm. The Service reasonably concluded that the petition failed to demonstrate a threat to the giant Palouse earthworm from agricultural and residential development of the Palouse bioregion or from exotic earthworms.
The Gaians are starting over, and I'm sure they'll succeed in shutting down this part of the country soon. It's just a matter of catching the proper black-robed saboteur in the right mood.
But for the moment, Palouse wheat farmers are safe from the depredations of the government-sponsored terrorist organization EPA.
